We went to see Rigoleto . It was good preforming, the building is nice and clean . We enjoyed it all together. Definitely going again for another event

I confess that I didn't watch anything inside the theater yet, but last Saturday, in free events in DTLA, we could to appreciate three opera singers there. It is amazing! So beautiful! We have the best theaters in the country. When it is possible, check the places. Including LA Opera house.

Once upon a time, this Faerie Queen was brought to the opera with her favorite SPG. A lovely evening! Madame Butterfly (set in 1930s) was a gorgeous production. The diet between Butterfly and her Lady in Waiting was spectacular. More opera! The end.

I haven't seen an opera in many years! It's so great we have this place to celebrate the holiday season and watch some tragic love story. Tosca's heart wrenching love story and beautiful vocals made my orchestra seating super special. Lovely time and show! Great set designs, costumes and wonderful vocals filled the evening.

After joining my husband, who is a lifelong opera fan, to numerous performances, this was my first viewing of Don Giovanni. Usually, the staging and sets are innovative and first rate, but this one, not so much. Nevertheless, you can count on professional performances at every opera. James Conlon gives a great lecture before every performance. The Pavillion and courtyard are worth a visit with restaurants, restrooms, and many bars to choose from inside and outside.

I have been a young(ish) LA Opera-goer for nearly a decade. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is one of the most beautiful spaces in LA and always worth a visit. LAO's recent production of Frida y Diego was one of the best I've seen. It was visually stunning and every movement, sound, and shot was meticulously planned and effortlessly delivered. I especially appreciated LAO's effort to create an evening of cultural immersion and inclusive festivity. From the artist commissioned Dia de Los Muertos altar on the plaza to the pre-show cultural performance and talk and Mexican-inspired audience attire (for those who chose to participate), I have never felt so connected to the opera community as I did on opening night. Make an evening of it before the run ends on December 9!

Such a great experience! Talk about dressing up to the 10s. It is a great opportunity dress up however when you sit you're completely crunched up in your beautiful gown. The space is extremely tight and small so I don't recommend being a Cinderella in your gown. If you're tall definitely get the outside seating and if you're afraid of heights the seating might scare you a little bit with the angle of seating. I really don't understand why everything has to be so tight and crunched up but I guess this used to be a venue for the Oscars and we had to fit all the stars. And there are plenty! Depending on your seating you'll be taking the elevator to your row. It only goes as high as a fifth floor so If you don't like the elevator it's only five flights of stairs. Oh I forgot if you're in heels that could be like a tough climb. Definitely get the program so you know when intermission is and you can rush down to get your food which is not plenty but it is snacks that is offered as well as some drinks. I have to say the snacks are pretty spot on! We went to the Cinderella and it was such a great experience. They would sing in Italian and a translation would be on top in English. If your hard of seeing definitely get your binoculars or eyeglasses. For those who love opera and plays this is a must do if you're in LA ! There is valet parking as well as plenty parking in the surrounding area.

Top Tip: Opera audiences are lively and engaged, but they do NOT appreciate it when you try to start the wave before a performance.

A lovely woman who I met recently on a dating app invited me to the opera. I only agreed to go because I thought she was mispronouncing "Oprah," and I will drive to the ends of the earth to see Oprah. Turns out she was talking about the LA Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and specifically their production of The Marriage of Figaro. I ultimately agreed to go because I'm trying to be more refined and counter my ex-wife's incorrect opinion that I'm too coarse and ill-mannered. Since my divorce, I've actually started to learn Spanish, watch 15 minutes of PBS each month, and call my trash, "rubbish" in an effort to sound more urbane and worldly. The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart was my first exposure to opera and it was MAGICAL. Mozart wrote the opera in the late 1700's, but it still entertains - even after hundreds of years and the invention of Netflix, Dave & Buster's, and the crossword puzzle. I appreciate that the production broke free of the ossified cultural standards of the 18th century with a wonderful diversity in casting that reflects our modern society. I did get a bit of the side eye from other patrons when I opened my Doritos and beef jerky during the show, and when I leaned in excitedly to tell my date that "I know that character from Bugs Bunny," but people were mostly friendly and focused on watching the wonderful performances. The sets were evocative, the orchestra sublime, the actors were fantastic and their voices divine. I was particularly moved by one scene in which the countess sits heartbroken in her quarters at the edge of her bed in a delicately-layered white linen dress that was partially and brilliantly illuminated by an intense beam of white light that pierced the darkened room through a window at the opposite end of the stage. Gorgeous. I guess my only beef is that the very title of the opera completely spoiled the ending for me, which could have easily been remedied had Mozart only added a question mark to the title. I'm embarrassed to say that I thought opera was going to be rubbish. It's anything but. Go see any production put on at the LA Opera and, if this work is any indication, I'm certain that you won't be disappointed. Thanks LA Opera!

The L A OPERA opening last night of El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, was a cinematic tapestry of drama, poetry, and art. As the score, the singing, and the Spanish libretto swirled around and swept me away, I realized I was seeing an opera unlike any staged artform I had ever beheld. Ricochetting between opulence and minimalism, the eloquent singing and staging constantly surprised and delighted. In the end, the sweet, teary union of Frida y Diego's story left me breathless

Gentlemen and women's attire for a weekend evening at the Opera (non-opening night)?

10 yrs old kids are allowed?

Yes! Children are always welcome, however, some operas are more interesting/suitable for children than others.

I have never watched opera. I don't know any European language. Do they sing in English?

Almost all of the operas are not in English. They have supertitles projected above the stage, translating the lyrics into English.

I have been to the LA Philharmonic Walt Disney Concert Hall several times to see/hear different genres of music from ballet, to symphony, to jazz, and of course classical music, and during the holidays they give a great performance by their choir. Those of you who know me, know I love classical music and do have my favorite composers: Chopin, Vivaldi and Mozart. On Sunday, March 29th at 7:30pm my friend and I went to see Strauss, Bruch, & Moussa's elegant, classy performance that shook up the whole entire venue and the audience. It was just MAGNIFICENT! 10/10 The venue itself is STUNNING! Glamorous and easy to navigate all the aisles. Our seats were very comfortable and you can see the stage from any corner/angle since the theatre is not that big. Also has balcony seating. Tickets were $50 a piece not including tax. It has a beautiful gift shop, garden, different restaurants all around the building, and a small store where you can purchase some beverages and snacks. Overall, a GREAT performance and we both had a lovely time. Parking is $10 with few an entrances and few restrooms for both men & women. Thank you all for another AWESOME performance!! Will definitely return again next time I get a brochure or pamphlet in my mail.

It was also incredible hearing the powerful, booming sounds, as the musicians played fiercely! It really stirred up excitement inside & made my heart race at times! Performance | Elim Chan & Masabane Rangwahasha | 100% fabulous! They were both incredible! It was amazing seeing a female conductor lead with so much passion, grace, as well as excitement! It's as if she was doing a beautiful yet powerful dance! Hearing the beautiful voice and talent radiating from Masabane, as she sang opera was mesmerizing! She stood confident, poised & proud and was a sight to be seen and heard! Walt Disney Concert Hall | Magical! I loved all of the curves and shapes of the building, both inside and outside, as well as the majestic shades and colors throughout! Drinks & Bites | I was excited to see refreshments, as I know, we were going to eat afterwards, but a light bite was perfect! And…read moreso will the low cost underground self-parking (only $10, which has got to be the best deal in town). The huge courtyard with giant fountain spans the three theatres there -- the Mark Taper, the Ahmanson (both for plays and musicals), and the mighty Dorothy Chandler (for opera and ballet). It's massive! We were there for the new Philip Glass opera, ancient Egypt's Akhnaten. Lots of Queen Nefertiti cosplay so it's worth getting there early for the people watching. Seats are impossibly pricey, so it may be a one-time thing but I'd say worth it. Our front row seats (but on the side so you miss a tiny, tiny bit of the stage) were about $200 each. The Dorothy Chandler is huge so you may need your (appropriately named) opera glasses if you're up in the hinterland. For most operas, there are "supertitles" above the stage which translate what you're watching. Robbie Yelp tip on food -- the sit-down restaurants on and adjacent to the plaza are super pricey. Instead, do this: the Mullin Wine Bar is right there on the pavilion. For two to share, get one pizza and one charcuterie plate. Both are delicious and filling; that's $50. Add drinks and you're getting close to a hundo, but it is what it is. Take your food and drinks out into the plaza for people watching until the opera bell rings. O sole mio!

Oftentimes, my visit to…read morethe area have been to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the LA Phil (and usually Vespaio afterwards), the MOCA, or to The Broad. Recently, I was here for LA Opera Verdi's Falstaff. Previous to this visit, I have never been to an opera only performance, besides having one as part of a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall or watching them on PBS. I read the summary first prior to attending and all the information provided on the website was very helpful (from parking, opera summary, etc.), especially for first time visitors. Despite a road closure nearby, it was still pretty easy to get into the parking structure and walk over to the Pavilion. We arrived early to pick up your tickets and use the restroom prior to the performance. With any "subtitles", they often tend to be to the side, so I often had to look to the right and back to the stage to understand what they were singing about. The stage did not look as big as I expected, but when the sets were switched, I was amazed at the beautiful sets and also how "grand" they looked from my seat. During the intermission, there were snacks and drinks one could purchase. I love that they also offered throat drops to the side, which some patrons should probably have used as they were coughing during the performance. The lines to the women's restroom were also coordinated, as if one was at Disneyland. We were lucky enough to zip through the roped-off lines early on before the lines really started to get long. We also stepped out for air prior to the intermission being over. There were "pre-" and "post-" performance talks and I wished that I was able to hear where the post-performance talk was going to be. I had left after the applause to hurry and use the restroom, so I missed the location announcement of the post-performance talks. Yes, I could have asked an employee but my friend had also already walked outside of the venue. The Music Center also had an "art" installation next door, in a small space so we also checked it out before we left. The performance was wonderful and the employees we encountered were very kind. It was easy to get to and from the venue, from the parking structure. It is a great location and would recommend a visit at least once.

The performers are scattered throughout Union Station. Sometimes blended in with the everyday public. Sometimes standing out in elaborate costumes. The audience members are given Sennheiser wireless headsets to listen to a live mix of orchestra and opera singers. We were encouraged to explore Union Station while the story unfolded. Dancers appeared out of nowhere and I'm looking at the public a little bit differently. Is this person standing next to me part of the performance? Maybe, maybe not. But I had a fun time trying to figure that out. ...and in a deep way, I guess everyone was part of the performance whether they knew it or not. Describing this experience, I would relate it to two things. You know when you're watching a musical film (or the show Glee) and the actors break into song with all the background actors engaging in a choreographed dance? Often times you think "Yeah, that never happens in real life!" Well, for me it did. I can also relate this experience to witnessing a flash mob that I knew was going to take place. Invisible Cities only has a few more show dates left which are sold out. But if they add more dates, I would recommend for everyone to jump at the chance at buying tickets because this is an experience you will never forget!

Yes, I say! The last time I went to the Opera I had a 3 show subscription with Los Angeles Opera company 5 years ago. At the time Woody Allen, and David Cronenberg had created operas for the 2008 summer season. Allen's production received rave reviews. Sadly I opted for the David Cronenberg directed production of The Fly instead. Little did I know how UNfabulous the production could be, involving continuous dry humping nude love scenes, and the worst lyrics I have ever heard in my life. "And his arms and his limbs started to fall off......" My humiliation FOR the cast was all encompassing. Even when I later saw Carmen, which was staged beautifully with gorgeous costumes I wasn't very excited about it. I haven't given up on classical Opera, I just didn't enjoy my last experience so much. About 4 weeks ago: I am riding my daily commute via L.A. Metro bus and "transit tv" features a profile on The Industry's latest production Invisible Cities which combines opera and dance in coordination with LA Dance Project performed throughout Union Station with the audience utilizing wireless headphones. Almost immediately I am sold. I was fortunate and entirely grateful to be able to attend a free performance last Sunday after I took too long to buy tickets and the 3 week run quickly sold out. In director, Yuval Sharon's introduction to the performance he informs us that there is "no right way to view this performance." He asks us to allow everyone who is using the space to let it meet their needs, whether it is transit, or warmth and shelter. He also encourages us to share our headphones with passerbys and those who were not able to procure some for that very performance. He asks us to journey together and just experience Invisible Cities, without concern of missing something somewhere else in the station and that essentially this is by design a unique and fleeting experience. I find this divine. For me the performance was a joy. The joy of a beautiful public space becoming even more alive with music and dance to many's surprise as people passed through the station. The faces of my fellow audience members with intent as a dancer's kinetic energy was all of a sudden beside them and or all around them. The excitement of being in the middle of a scene as a singer is emoting and singing while staring into my eyes walking toward me. Me on the verge of tears. I am endlessly in love with Invisible Cities. I have a renewed interest in classical music and opera in particular thanks to the creative infusion of The Industry. Thank you kindly, I am feeling inspired for years to come. XXO

While apparently the rest of the city was freely downing Cinco de Mayo tacos and tequila, we attended the final performance of the production of the opera In The Penal Colony at The Studio Theater CSULB. This is a fine small auditorium, well planned and comfortable. That comfort is essential for full attention to be given to the many aspects, somber and sober, of this excellent (with caveat) production. First, the raison d'être for my attending. I find that this opera is one of Philip Glass' most stunningly beautiful. The string quintet, though mounted out of sight, was the engine for this brilliant study of a killing "machine". The strong voices of tenor Doug Jones and baritone Zeffis Quinn Hollis were superb. I consider this an important work well developed and well measured by conductor Andreas Mitisek. I would not want to engage in criticism out of my realm. The book of Kafka's short stories is bedside awaiting me to pick it up. Somewhere along the line in the twentieth century, opera went slightly mad in its desire to stage productions that meet modern needs. (Next season's King Arthur [as a comic book superhero] by Henry Purcell in collaboration with whimsically juvenile-loving Musica Angelica arouses much curiosity. Get ready kids.) Kafka wrote of inhumanity and absurdity of humans over a hundred years ago. The added text from the student's ensemble personal incarcerations diminished that theme. There was an important point to make, no question, but youth personalized stories led to unanswered questions and reduced their message. Corral students freedom of speech, really? Really that's the kid's sugar treat. Poor staging revolved around stomping students many with muddy line delivery. Stage direction to place them behind a stark curtain (à la Julie Taymor, à la wayang kulit) and silent for ultimate expressiveness was inspired. Poorly developed as a Greek chorus but when given the opportunity to act, Morgan Pimental, John E. Pizzini, Matthew Limas and especially Mark Oliver ably shone through the ponderous choreography.

This place is a true gem in the heart of downtown LA. We went to see Lily Allen's incredible…read moreperformance of "West End Girl" and the vibes and setting were IMMACULATE. Pictures def don't do it justice so just do a favor and go. The theater has been lovingly restored and cared for. The intricate molding and art on the walls and the ceiling are truly some of the prettiest I've ever seen. A large concession and bar area. Gorgeous lighting and typical theater seating (plan on getting your feet stepped on because aisle space for your feet and legs is non existent but this is consistent with every theater I've ever been to). We were in orchestra seating and the views were incredible. Seats were comfortable and while I can't personally attest it appeared there'd be no truly bad seat in the place when it came to viewing the stage. If you have a chance to attend a show here, it's well worth the experience.

This is an update to my earlier review:…read more Venue 4: The newly upgraded seats on the main floor are great...very comfy. I cannot say the same about the Wiltern and the Grove of Anaheim. They use zip-tied banquet chairs for their main floor seating :( Service 4: The only services I have been exposed to were the security and the ticket check staff at the entrance. Both were friendly and polite. Facilities 3 stars: Restroom availability is limited to the upper floor and the basement. None on the main floor. And after the concert starts they shut down the ones in the basement. This is inconvenient in general because of the crowds and particularly troublesome for people with limited mobility (although there is an elevator but it still takes time). Why not keep them all open throughout the concert? The last word 4: Nice historic venue to enjoy some good entertainment at. Will be happy to visit again!

I've been to the Dolby Theatre many times now for various shows - most recently Ronny Chieng &…read moreHasan Minhaj as part of Netflix is a Joke. Staff is always very friendly upon arriving and so helpful in finding seats. They also say thanks for coming as I'm leaving, which is always cute when at a big venue! They sell drinks and snacks, for example M&Ms and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups for $4 a pop, at the concession stands. I like sitting in Row 1 of any of the balcony seats as you then get a nice, clear view although from a bit of a distance. I have 20/20 vision and you can't see every expression of the faces on stage but it's close enough for me. I like the first row of the Mezzanine because no one is in front of you (obvi) but also they have cup holders along the cement low balcony in front of you. I also sat in the balcony for a PaleyFest at the Dolby Theatre of Hacks last year, followed by a Q&A with the cast. No issues at all seeing the screen and being comfortable while watching from the balcony. Seats are comfy with plenty of room between you and the stranger next to you. Plus they are padded so just overall more comfortable than other venues. Love going to shows at Dolby Theatre in the heart of Tinsel Town right at Hollywood Blvd & Highland! Note - there is a back sneaky entrance if you know whatsup & are getting dropped off with hardly any people!

It was really weird getting into the theater as there were barriers at the entrance keeping us out…read more Security people all wired up were standing around the barrier. I was early and saw nobody entering so I stood around, asking other people who also had no idea what the heck was going on. In time I did approach the man as to how I got in and he says well, do you have a ticket and I showed him I did and he moved the barrier. They really could've done it better don't you think?
