Weinheim is one of my favorite places to visit when we are in the area. Its not as touristy as…read moreHeidelberg but you can get there with the tram from Heidelberg or Mannheim easily. It has an intact medieval city center, a beautiful palace park with a great playground and walking paths through the surrounding hills. This time we came on a September afternoon with the whole family. After a walk in the park and time at the playground, we were all very hungry. There are several restaurants on the main square (Marktplatz) and one of the locals suggested stopping at Diebsloch. We sat outside under large umbrellas and had a great view of the church and the old buildings. The service was pretty good- they gave us two Ikea high chairs for the toddlers be had with us and didn't seem to mind that we stayed a while. Most of the guys got the typical Schnitzel (SchniPoSa) with fries and salad and said it was good. I had Maultaschen, with salad (a Swabian specialty - ravioli filled with ground meat and spices) and a glass of regional white wine. Both were very solid. The only complaint we had were the limited options for vegetarians- they were out of fish that day and there was only an overpriced pasta dish available. The inside is very charming and comfortable, preserving the half timbered walls and sloping rooms of the 500-year-old building. The bathrooms are up a flight of stairs. I could change my son on the little counter but the bigger boy with us had to be changed on the bathroom floor.

As the name suggests, the place is an old ruin, dating back to the 12th century, which gives the…read moreplace a unique atmosphere. It's possible to climb up the stairs of the old tower to an unrivalled view that - weather permitting - reaches from Weinheim's old town centre to the hills of the Pfälzer Wald. A long, long time ago I went there regularly with my dad - no wonder the place is filled with nostalgia for me. However, times have changed, and in case of the Windeck, definitely for the better. Since Rolf Pflästerer has taken over (now a few good years) it's more than a great place to end a Sunday stroll or a longer hike through the forests of the Odenwald by sitting in the shades of some large chestnut trees and sipping on a cool beer. The outside area is a beergarden that can rival the best. The cellar is a restaurant with a delicious, occasionally daring, menu. A tented area is perfect for weddings and other parties. It takes about 20 minutes to to take the direct yet rather steep path from the Gerberbachviertel up to the old ruin. A slightly longer and gentler way starts at the bottom of the crossing between "Grundelbachstraße" and "Dürrestraße". Or alternatively, you can take the car up the Wachenberg ("Am Schloßberg") and turn right into "Neuer Burgweg" once you passed the built-up area. Behind the ruin lies an adequately sized parking area.

I haves the veal schnitzel and a potato/mushroom salad that was good. The only negative was the service. It was a little slow and from sit down to checkout I only spoke to him 3 times. He was busy though I will give him that but I was at the place across the street when it was packed and had great service and great food.

Super salads, pasta, meat and fish dishes. I often order the Auberginen Cordon-Bleu salad or the salmon. Good place to go to watch the people on the Marktplatz. If you want to sit outside when the weather is nice you have to wait for a free table as reservaitons are only taken for indoor seating. Also good for a first date and business lunches.

OK, now that I have gotten that news out front I have to tell you about the great evening that we had while visiting this restaurant. I love that there is lots of different spaces for you to eat and enjoy drinks. I ordered a flight of beers and I have to say that the dark beer was probably my favorite. It was very very smooth. The Hefeweizen was great, pilsner had a little bit of a bitter finish, and the other option that was in the basket to me was terrible. But different taste and different strokes for different folks. Patrick was the star of the show other than my incredible veal. You would not know he was from the US because his German was on point. He was so kind and genuinely interested in speaking to us. He was very busy, but he made us feel so welcome and took great care of our needs. We speak a little bit of German, but it was great to have someone give us a little more insight on the restaurant, beers, and food. Thank you so much, Patrick! I wish we could have made a return visit, we should have come to this place at the beginning of our trip and circled back. A little bonus info the burger was also delicious. My husband ordered it and it was almost like a juicy meatball. Really thick, delicious tasting ground beef. If you're in the mood for a burger this definitely hits the spot, but my schnitzel was incredible. did I mention my veal schnitzel was incredible ??? Best meal. I had the entire trip. Hands-down, I hope to return someday!

The service was excellent and on time, they always asked us if we needed anything. The restaurant was clean. The beers were excellent. The Spätzel was out of the box with dried crusted onions, not freshly cooked onions. The schnitzel was a little undercooked, but ok. Since the food was a liilte off, I took off one star. Other than the food , everything ever was great.
