This is undoubtedly one of the largest cemeteries in Galveston with quite literally thousands of…read moregraves. Unfortunately, this cemetery is surrounded on three sides by busy traffic, retail outlets, and a few residential homes nearby. The cemetery as a whole is very orderly, neatly arranged, and well manicured. This is still a very much active and ongoing cemetery with additional space for those who want to make this their forever home. You can choose burial or above ground mausoleum space. This place is very well attended by those who are still with us due to many graves and mausoleum spaces being covered in flowers and trinkets. There is an on-site enclosed chapel for services honoring the dearly departed. Closer to 61st St. you'll find some of the older headstones and family vaults. The only drawback of the cemetery is the fact that it gets easily flooded in a heavy rain, or especially in a hurricane, causing some of the stones to fall over.

It sits on the very busy 61st St. and it's directly across from a large shopping center. This is still an active graveyard as there's less than 20 people interred here leaving plenty of space for more. It does have a nice large wooden pagoda with some marble benches. It's possible this small cemetery was begun because the congregation Beth Jacob cemetery right next to it looks to be completely full (see separate review). I would have to admit that I would expect to find a gas station on this corner as opposed to a cemetery, considering all the traffic and noise.

There was seven recorded graves before 1900. They were the descendants of the Simpton's, Schrieber's, Clinton's and Megg's. In the early 1900 the recorded family graves are Johnson's, Lindner's, Langham and Shaw. There are some unknown names for grave site located in the cemetery. In 1994 Jane Ewing located and record all graves. 1972 1.76 acres and in 1993 1.33 acres was donated by the Jeffery Family. In 2011 the Andrew Johnson family donated 0.36 acres. The cemetery is free of charge for the residents of Port Bolivar and their families. The cemetery is maintained by donations and volunteers. This cemetery is also very different from the Lakeview cemetery. Virtually all of the graves here are cast concrete graves with an affixed marble plaque, most of which are from the 1920's-50's. Sadly, this cemetery appears to have suffered the ravages of hurricanes and time because many of the headstones are toppled, broken or just missing. In contrast, the Congregation Beth Jacob cemetery (see separate review) next to it is immaculately maintained. As you head south through the cemetery, you then enter the Memorial cemetery with more modern granite headstones and recent burials. There are service members intered in the municipal section that date back to the confederate war. It's clear that some effort has been made to improve the cemetery, but its state of disrepair is almost beyond fixing.

There is also the newer B'Nai Israel cemetery on the corner (see separate review) which may have been added next to this cemetery because there is little space left here. On the other side is the Serbian orthodox cemetery. This cemetery is very well laid out and orderly and there is not one single damaged or toppled headstone. It has been very well taken care of over the many decades that it has been here. The oldest head stone I could find was from 1907, nothing from the 1800s. Towards the very back of the cemetery, there is still room enough for a few dozen more burials. It was there. I found the most recently interred person from 2021. As you move away from the main body of the cemetery, there are additional graves located off to the side. If you don't mind the noise of the traffic, it looks like there's still space for sale.

If you want your baby buried in the garden of the innocent you only can have a flat headstone. That…read morebeing said if they mow they pick up all the flowers off the baby's Graves and throw them behind the office. This area is not huge. They can take a few minutes out of their day when they mow over the grave over the headstones and put the flowers back on the baby's Graves. You go out there now and the grass is entirely dead where the babies are buried. It's called The garden of Innocence. They don't even water the grass. I paid a lot of money for my daughter's hand-painted ceramic picture for her headstone. Very early on when she died the lawn mower went over and put a huge deep scratch through the middle and they don't care. They're like too bad too sad what do you want from us? I would like you to perhaps water the grass at least and put the babies flowers back on their graves!!! Have some dignity & some compassion for these parents. I have 2 daughters buried in the garden of Innocence. The area is very small so please don't make a reply and say the area is just so huge there's no way it would take hours to put the flowers back because that's b*******.. I know it's asking for too much to them think about the people there as opposed to just making the money.

Sometimes, I think I ought to sell my plot( not easy to do as by law the cemetery can't buy it…read moreback) and buy a plot in Mt. Olivet Catholic cemetery. I stopped by as I usually do around Christmas to pay respects to most of my family buried here. I was presently surprised to find two wreaths on my veteran uncle's headstones. Probably, the VFW did this, but thanks to Galveston Memorial for allowing this to happen, and having/ keeping a well manicured park. I'm gonna hold off on selling the plot, and relocating.

The larger marker reads, "Trustees of the Methodist Church purchased this lot in 1848 as a worship site for Black slaves. Meetings were held outdoors until a building was erected in 1863. At the end of the Civil War (1865), ownership of the property was transferred to the recently-freed Blacks, who organized the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Texas. It was later named in honor of the Rev. Houston Reedy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who served as the first pastor. The church survived several natural disasters, beginning in 1875, when the sanctuary was damaged in a storm. It was destroyed in 1885 by a fire that burned a large area of the city. Finished in 1887, the present structure was restored after the destructive hurricane of 1900 and repaired again in 1947 and 1957. More than 30 ministers have served the congregation including the Rev. J.E. Edwards, the Rev. Josiah Armstrong, the Rev. M.D. Moody, The Rev. W.R. Beamer, the Rev Louis H. Reynolds, the Rev. A.I. Henley, the Rev. R.C. Walker, the Rev. Erford Barker, the Rev. C.B. Bryant, and The Rev. Sylvester I. Green. Many of Galveston's prominent Black citizens have been members of Reedy Chapel A.M.E. June 8, 2021 One of…read morethe many historical churches on the island. It's very unique because it's an African "Methodist/Episcopal" church! A 2-for one...which I've never known of that before. Church dates back to 1848 when black slaves were given the land where the church resides. After slavery ended in Texas this church acted as a school educating freed men/women. It endured the storm of 1900 but the original building was destroyed in a fire in 1885. Point of reference Church is off Broadway between 20-21st and next door to RCC resale FYI Every year (to date) people celebrate Juneteenth here
