While visiting the beautiful coastal town of Sorrento, my wife and I accidentally created a new nightly tradition and it involved returning again and again to La Laterna. What started as "let's try this place tonight" quickly turned into, "So, same time tomorrow?" By the second evening, it wasn't just dinner, it was our official romantic Sorrento ritual. Candlelit tables, that charming Italian ambiance, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you slow down and actually enjoy every bite (and each other). The food? Absolutely delicious. Every dish tasted fresh, authentic, and made with care. You know it's good when you start planning tomorrow's order before you've even finished tonight's meal. We kept telling ourselves we'd try somewhere new and then somehow found ourselves back at La Laterna. No regrets. And the service? Truly top notch. Christian, our gracious host, welcomed us like old friends from night one. Tony, Angelo, and Roberto took such great care of us! attentive, warm, and always ready with a smile (and probably amused that we kept coming back). By the end of our trip, it felt less like we were dining out and more like we were being looked after by family. Now, let's talk about the real reason we may or may not have returned nightly: the tiramisu. Listen! I don't throw this around lightly. It was the best part of every dinner. Every. Single. Night. Light, creamy, perfectly balanced, it basically became our grand finale. We'd say we were too full and then somehow a tiramisu would appear and disappear just as quickly. La Laterna didn't just serve us dinner, it gave us a simple, romantic, joy filled routine during our stay in Sorrento. Great food, wonderful people, and desserts that will forever live in our memories (and possibly on my waistline). If you're in Sorrento, do yourself a favor and go. Right from the moment we sat down, the waitstaff was inviting and friendly. The ambiance is so charming nestled in a narrow alleyway in the heart of Sorrento. They have a guitarist serenading the tables, truest charming experience! The polpo (grilled octopus) with rosemary potatoes was phenomenal and I'm not bashful to say we ordered two plates it was that delicious! The pasta with eggplants and tomato was scrumptious as well. I walked in with no reservation based on a locals recommendation. The locals are right and the food was great. Stick with Pasta, salad, fish or pizza and you will be happy. I always think hot bread is a nice touch although not everyone does it (they do). It's tucked in a cozy nook of a small side street and had romantic music playing throughout my entire dining experience . I will go back for more! read more

La Lanterna was recommended by our host so we stopped in for dinner. We looked for it the first day we arrived but the address we had sent us down a side street and we couldn't find it. My wife pointed out what she thought looked like a cute place for dinner so we looked at the menu and realized this was the place we looked for last week! We talked to the host and made reservations (highly recommended) for the following evening. We sat outside and perused the menu. We felt like a rose wine and the waiter recommended a local one called Visione. We both loved it and went well with our meal. While deciding, they brought a complementary appetizer. We decided to both try the "Traditional Menu" of eggplant Parmesan, spaghetti with zucchini "La Lanterna" style, pork tenderloin and desert. The food was amazing and there was a lot of it. For starter, eggplant parmesan. I like eggplant but am not a big fan, but it was cooked well and tasted fine. My wife said it's one of the best she's ever had! Next was my favorite, the spaghetti with zucchini La Lanterna style. It was so different and delicious. The host told me the basics on how to make the sauce out of the zucchini so I will be trying this out when I get home. The pork was cooked perfectly. Tender, juicy and delicious. Then they served lemon sorbet and finished with what I will call a riff on tiramisu. There was a yellow sponge cake that had a little limoncello soaked into the very bottom, then filled with a lemon custard and covered with whipped cream. I really enjoyed it. Great food and wonderful service. My wife is lactose intolerant. Recently, we stopped in around noon and asked if they could do a "Buffalo Mozzarella" pizza and they said "sure". It was absolutely amazing. Large wine selection and the best Limoncello Spritz around. Servers are very professional and attentive. Stopped here for an early dinner. Enjoyed s glass of Prosecco to start. They served a bread basket with a few breads and olive oil and balsamic vinegar which was good. I ordered the Caponata Sorrento, which was so good! It was pickled vegetables, cheese, tomatoes, a few anchovies, rocket salad, artichokes... atop bread and it was really good! One of my favorite restaurants in London was called La Lanterna so on a whim we decided to try this place. The grilled octopus was amazing and the service was very friendly. One of the bambino's ordered the spit roasted chicken which was quite good. My wife was not sure what to get and the waiter helped steer her away from a dish she was going to order and towards the special which was Sea Bass on potatoes and she loved it. He did this again for dessert steering us towards field strawberries on top of sugared oranges topped by strawberry gelato. I've never had field strawberries in a dessert and it was wonderful - the flavor really comes through strongly. Overall a great night and we will be back. read more

The people were incredibly warm and inviting and the pasta well above the average we found in many other restaurants in the area. Looking at the reviews, I thought this restaurant was a smart pick. I personally found it to be the worst meal I had in my two week trip across italy. There were some incredible restaurants in sorrento, this was not a good meal. It was not authentic, at all. It's just got tourists. Which means expensive and poor quality. I may have ordered the wrong thing... but my husbands pizza was soupy.... literally soaking wet. I found it to be inedible. It's a shame to have a meal here when there are sooo many WONDERFUL and authentic Italian restaurants a few feet away. read more

My wife and I had a great meal at La Lanterna, but it was admittedly not a complete test of the restaurant. Although we had reservations and high hopes for a full authentic southern Italian meal, after an unexpectedly huge lunch (a full authentic southern Italian meal) we weren't looking for a full dinner meal as we had planned. We went to La Lanterna anyway, shared a pizza and half bottle of local red wine, and left happy. Nice place, good service, and good food to the extent we sampled. The ambiance is much nicer and more upscale inside vs. the outside alley seating, so I'd head inside if that's what you are looking for. And it's a bit hard to find, since it's at the end of a tiny and poorly marked alley. Here's a hint: From Piazza Tasso (center of old downtown Sorrento), go west on Via San Cesareo about 100 meters until you get to a narrow alley on the right, with a small sign directing you to La Lanterna. If you pass the Limonoro shop on the right (great lemoncello), you've gone too far. And if you try to follow Google Maps and GPS, you'll wander all over the place like we did. You cannot reach it from Via Santa Maria delle Grazie, even though it looks like you should be able to on Google Maps. read more
