Ahh, the lovely smell of walking into a cheese shop. Few things in life smell as nice - athlete's…read morefoot, ass, my petri dish in microbio class, etc. How can one go to Provence without getting some brie and crusty French bread? Les Clarines has a wonderful selection of cheeses that I have never heard of and definitely cannot pronounce. Unfortunately, they do not speak English here. Fortunately, hand gestures are universal. I point to the cheese. She points to the cheese. I point to my mouth, then my tummy, then my butt and give a thumbs up. She didn't think that was too funny. I opted for the brie with nuts. Why? Have you ever seen brie with nuts here in the US? That's right, it is known as the male brie. All the brie imported into the states is female (I just made this up. Don't go to France asking for male brie, they will laugh at you with a French accent.) A great buttery flavor with a mellow saltiness that is the perfect accompaniment to fresh French bread. I could tell this place was good b/c of all the French people walking in. On weekends there is a farmer's market so it gets pretty crowded. Now the bigger question - are we supposed to eat the rind on the brie?
