A charming little crepe shop in Vitré serving award-winning galettes and crepes (plus hard cider!)…read more I'm a big fan and follower of these places that commit to using organic and local products, and am so happy that Creperie La Clé Des Champs has received well-deserved recognition for doing exactly that. We arrived around 11:45 am on a Tuesday, when they were just opening up for business (mind you, they open for only 2-hours a day), and we were lucky to be seated as we showed up without a reservation. By 12:30, the restaurant was full. The menu (both in French and English) has four large pages filled with galette and crepe options - either a la carte or included in a menu (all inclusive meal). I wanted to try what they were famous for in Bretagne, so I opted for the Country Menu, which is a deal at 12,90 Euro: Glass of Cider, Galette with ham, egg, and Emmental cheese, Crepe with butter and sugar or honey. This is a mom-and-pop shop, and the husband makes everything fresh to order (including the batter, as we heard him whisking away in the kitchen). Meanwhile, the wife maintains the front of the house, pouring drinks and taking orders. Be forewarned, service is somewhat slow, but that is to be expected with the aforementioned. Just order a bottle of cider and enjoy the company you're with in this quaint lunch spot!

After exploring this lovely medieval village, I had a blissful lunch experience here last summer…read more I love the ambience. It has beautiful, comfortable furniture and decor and a warm feeling tone I felt as though I were in the home dining room of Claude, the owner who skillfully and lovingly prepares savory galettes in his spotless kitchen. Galettes are buckwheat crêpes, a signature dish of French Brittany. Using a variety of fresh, high-quality ingredients, Claude quickly and artfully prepared three galettes simultaneously, before my wondering eyes. He expertly ladled, spread, flipped, topped, and folded three galettes all with different fillings. The traditional ham, Emmental cheese, and fried egg is probably the most popular. I savored every bite of my very large and perfect galette with its crispy edges. Chase yours with a glass of cidre made from local apples. No, it's not apple cider. Speaking of apples, my dessert was a luscious apple crêpe with real whipped cream. Great food, generous portions, fair prices, attractive surroundings, attentive service, and Claude's personal touch. It doesn't get any better than this. Movie night? This amazing little crêperie is also conveniently located just steps from the Aurore Cinema.

Last week I was staying in a small town south of Rennes and we decided to go to dinner here one…read morenight, since there aren't many restaurants around. ***LOCATION*** We were really in the country! There are not many businesses or restaurants around, but we found this one. I was shocked to see how fancy it was. It is near the lake and can be a bit hard to find with the GPS. It was dark when we went, but at first we drove around to the parking lot for the lake, but there was a rope blocking the entry up the drive to the restaurant, so we drove back around. They told us that they actually haven't finished the parking lot but it will be out back. For the moment you can park in the grass or at the lake. ***EXPERIENCE*** Great experience! The prices were very low since we were not at all in a major city, and galettes and crêpes are often affordable. The staff was friendly and even spent a long time talking with us when checking out. They told us the restaurant had been open since 2017, I believe. They are only open on the weekends though and have recently seemed to update the place. It was dark when we went, but they seem to have nice outdoor seating in the day, and even at night they had nice lights all around. All of their products are local and you really do taste the difference! ***PRICE*** I can't remember the exact prices, but we ordered a bottle of cider for the table and I was shocked by how affordable it was. The galettes range from around 5-13 euros depending on what you get inside. I got the vegetarian one with emmental, egg, broccoli and mushrooms. It was very filling, I couldn't finish it all. I think it was around 12 euros. The dessert crêpes range from 2-6 euros. You can get plain with butter and sugar or more gourmand ones with chocolate, fruit and whipped cream. For lunch I saw that they have a deal for an appetizer and dish or dish and dessert for 13 euros! ***FOOD*** The food was amazing! Again, they only use local ingredients and you can tell by the flavor. The cider was one of the best ciders I have ever tried and it was from the region! Even the dessert crêpe was simple but delicious! I just got a plain crêpe with whipped cream, but you could taste the butter and sugar. It was like a thin sweet and salty dessert, and all for a couple of euros. ***CONCLUSION*** If you are in Rennes, it is definitely worth making the drive here!!
