Two days ago, I had a deeply disturbing experience at bar La Gata in Frankfurt a.M. with a woman who was apparently of Russian origin. She was loudly spreading war propaganda at the bar - saying things that left me absolutely stunned. And no one interrupted her!
She claimed that Ukraine has no language of its own, does not really exist, and that Russia is "liberating" the world from "Nazis" - including Germany! Most horrific of all, she said that killing civilians in Russia's so‑called "war of liberation" is acceptable.
When I contradicted her, she called me a Nazi and told me to "go to the gas chamber". She said loudly people like me should be gassed. I responded and voiced my opinion - at which point she became even more vulgar, also attacking the bar staff, (simply because the bartender quietly said she didn't think war was "a good thing" either). Her sexist, and the lesbian sexuality disregarding remarks were absolutely disgusting.
Thank you, bar La Gata, for an evening that still leaves me with a deeply uncomfortable feeling two days later. And no, it was not half a long drink that made me sick, but what I had to witness there.
Such inhuman and hateful statements have no place in public - least of all in a venue that claims to stand for openness and dignity. For me, that was my last visit there. read more
