Cafe des Avenues is one of my favorite "go to" places. It's one of the few places I feel I can go…read morewith my children (or just my laptop) and feel welcome. Friday nights: I've come here quite often with friends and a group of children and they have always been very accommodating and welcoming. There's a seating area with couches and coffee tables for the children to relax in after the dinner is over and while the adults linger over their wine... Not too long ago, there was a football table for kids and adults alike but some bad mannered children killed the fun for all when they tried to score extra balls by stuffing the exit hole with paper. It was a sad night indeed because it seems that the cafe owners have decided not to repair the table. Weekend brunch: Be sure to call in advance to reserve a table for sat or sun brunch because Cafe des Avenues buzzes with activity during the weekends. THe brunches are popular for families. Serving american pancakes, crepes, eggs, bacon, omelets....this place is as close to home (gastronomically speaking) as I'm gonna get. Weekday: With the exception of lunchtime, the cafe is quiet and the perfect place to get some work done. During the week, you will find the cafe scattered with people working on their laptops, sipping their cafe or tea and nibbling on a croissant or one of their excellent goufres.

I had the tartare de boeuf avec crostinis. I had the beef a bit spicy, which is exactly how I wanted it, not overpowered with spice, but just enough heat to feel each bite. both of us were happy with our choices, and hope to come back soon. I will add that the kitchen will not open up until 6:30, as with most cafe's and restaurants here in Lausanne , but you can have a few drinks and talk while you wait.

Ooo see I'm not sure I agree with the Yelpy consensus here dumping a bit on Blackbird. You've got…read moresolid coffee and a broad menu that's executed well. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Blackbird Down Town can get packed full stop, but the service, while a bit chaotic at times, moves things along and if you're wanting to skip the chaos you can just get anything to go, which I ended up doing. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Okay yes, it is most definitely overpriced. Like a lot, evidenced by my medium portion of Tikka Tikka Chicken Curry costing a staggering 15,60 CHF. That's insane even for Laussane. No Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? While expensive, this was an excellent dish. There wasn't an abundance of chicken but the veggies were so good that they blended right in. On top of that, it didn't fall into the trap of having too much sauce, and it instead blended just right with the quantity of rice. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? I would. Expensive or not this is a Laussane staple really. Star.

There is space on Friday/Saturday evenings and they can easily accommodate a large group. Now, the food quality is where it gets a bit more complicated. I went there having a craving for a good meat burger - something that is a bit expensive in Switzerland but usually the meat is good. Unfortunately, after ordering a double burger with bacon and avocado, I was quite disappointed. The meat was very disappointing and frankly left me with a feeling that I was having a meat-free steak. Not great. Fries and salad were fine. Unfortunately, that did not mean that their vegetarian burgers were any better - my GF's opinion of their vegetarian option was not that they were not as amazing either.
