There are 21 seats in this restaurant and 21 dinners served each evening it is open. If you are lucky, one of these seats and one of those dinners could be yours.
La Fourchette is the domain of a talented Madame Chef, who manages to prepare a wonderful multicourse dinner from a small open kitchen at the end of the small restaurant. Each guest is greated warmly by the door by the chef and the night we were there it was apparent that about 2/3rds of the guests were locals who knew about this gem and were on a first-name basis witht the chef.
The first step is the owner/chef will bring over a small chalk board. If you speak enough French to understand, whe will explain in French that she does not speak English and that if you want to ask about things, you will have to do so in French. This was not a problem for us. The chalk board lists three courses with two items available for each course. We decided to try everything so my wife took one side of the chalk board and I took the other. The chef seemed very pleased we wanted to try everything.
Before we get into the food, let's lay down the rules. You are not in charge...and happily so. If you are gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian or, God forbid, vegan, you should take your business somewhere else. This is not a "special requests" kind of restaurant. This restaurant is about experiencing what the chef feels like making that evening in the manner she wants to make it. Just enjoy, don't be a control freak diner.
You will be presented with a wine list and immediately think there is a mistake. Surely, these prices must be for a glass or a "demi verre" of 50 centiliters. No, those are bottle prices. It turns out many Loire Valley wines available at local domaines cost around 5 to 25 Euros. The chef has apparently decided she does not need to mark up her wines 300% like most restaurants and seems happy reselling the wines for about what they would cost at the winery. Your local region here is Vouvray ("Vuu -- Vray"), so I'd recommend enjoying one of those with your meal.
Our first course was homemade foie gras on toast points and a pork belly/beef terrine salad over greens. Both dishes were out of this world and both were extremely generous in portion where we were concerned we might not have enough room for the next courses. The next course was prawns with a wonderful dijon butter sauce served with rice and duck confit searved with amazing scalloped au gratin potatoes baked with a perfect crust on top. We thoroughly enjoyed these dishes and I admit even the sauce sucked out of the prawns' heads had a wonderful flavor.
We wrapped up with a cheese course, that was a little subtle in flavor, but still very nice (I come from the land of Point Reyes Blue, so my Cheese-O-Meter is set pretty high on flavor), and a chocolate fondue made up of very dark chocolate with a variety of fruit to dip into it.
The pace of this restaurant is warm, relaxed and local. So, if you are visiting from afar, please be respectful of that and just enjoy. Remember, you are not in charge...and that's a good thing.
Reservations are required and we found our hotel was able to find us seats that may have otherwise been unavailable. This is not a place you can just wander into and hope for the best. read more
