But the meal was "technically" very nice and definitely 2-stars but the flavours, the seasoning, the overall aromas were poor to average. Everything except the main course was totally forgettable. Service was also ok but the sommelier was a trainee who didn't know much about wine or anything else. Most of the wine pairings were null or ridiculous. Very disappointed. Especially when the menu is 335€ per head, you deserve some kind of amazement. There was none.

They told us they were out of the plat du jour AND the entree du jour (at 1 pm? really?!) yet people who came after us seemed to get it. No plat du jour = you must have the lunch menu, which is 11€ more than the plat. Hmmm. They didn't offer us anything or check in whatsoever during the meal. Hey, when my cocktail is nearly finished, don't you think I might like another one, or maybe something else? Water, wine? Items were not served together. For example, my first cocktail came while my husband stayed drink-less for another eight minutes or so. His burger came and five minutes later my fish arrived. Then my second drink came much later and his beer never arrived - he had nearly finished his meal before it came, and only then it got there because I went to the bar and asked after it. Overall, I think the food and drinks were very good but the service was abysmal. It seemed that we were treated much more poorly than the other tables, and I do think it's because we are not native Belgians (we are Canadians who speak intermediate French). Even if we were tourists, that's no reason to treat us as an inconvenience.

I adore this place!…read more I've been to this restaurant twice now, both times with the BF and his parents. I simply love the simplicity and the freshness of the seafood! The restaurant is simply and elegantly decorated, and it is not a pretentious place. I like to order off of the chalkboard Suggestions menu, as you know it will be fresh and it is what is in season. They also have a chalkboard of Suggested/Featured wine, which are excellent too! At our most recent visit, we had the salmon tartare, tuna tartare, crab fritter and shrimp croquettes as starters. Everything was superb. I had the salmon tartare, it is mixed with ginger and soy sauce. For me, it was a bit too much soy sauce (therefore salty), but the freshness of the fish still came through and I loved it. As main, everyone took something off of the Suggestions menu, except me, I had the fish & chips. I did not realize the fish & chips would be such a big portion with two filet! This is not a typical greasy English fish & chips, rather, it was light and fluffy with just the right amount of batter and perfectly crispy. Toucan Sur Mer serves the fish & chips with a homemade tartare sauce. It was amazing! What I also love about this place is that the waiters/waitresses offer to explain the fishes to you, because the Suggestions chalkboard usually consist of fishes other than your common salmon, tuna, cod...etc. At this visit, we learned about the bonito fish :)
