One of the best carne asada burritos I've ever had. The taste was phenomenal and it came with a really good green sauce too. Wow!! Reminds me of my time in San Diego. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves burritos and tacos. They have a fantastic pastry selection as well. Go here!

Yum.

Amazing. Just go. The place is not much to look at, but your tastebuds will be grateful. No credit or debit cards

A true GEM! If you're nearby and need your Mexican food fix don't go to the places that claim to be "authentic," go to this place!

Los Rancheros - Mt Sterling

We had driven up from Pittsfield to have lunch at another favorite, Hagel 1891 - our second attempt as the preceding day's plan was aborted about 15 miles short of the destination with a flat tire, and had to return home for replacements. Today, we tried again, but now found it closed, contrary to yesterday's confirmation phone call and expectations in the current Coronavirus post-Sheltering Phase 3 recovery. So, we decided to see what else Mount Sterling may have to offer and discovered this place just driving around town, and not much else open other than fast food. It is also promoted by a huge billboard at the main intersection on the east side of town. It is located on the west end of town, in what appears to have once been a corner service station in its original life as the fueling island remains. I recall this having been a bar and grill joint at one point. Outdoor dining is the name of the game in the Phase 3 Recover Illinois Playbook, and they were well prepared to serve with patio tables, folding tables, and clearly a number of newly constructed wood picnic tables both el fresco and under a big tent placed in what would normally be part of the parking lot. Billed as "authentic Mexican," the menu had a large selection of brunch, lunch, and dinner items including some more exotic items not normally found around these parts such as molcajetes served in a lava stone grinding bowl that is preheated in an oven prior to serving and keeps the cornucopia of delectables and sauce piping hot for a long time. Served with tortillas for a fajitas style feast. Yum! We ordered chicken quesadillas, chicken enchiladas suizas, and pork carnitas. The quesadillas where the thickest we believe we have ever seen they were so packed with chicken and cheese accompanied by a nice mixed salad, pico de gallo and Mexican/Spanish rice. The enchiladas also were amply filled and draped in a green verde sauce, refried beans and rice. The chicken in both was nicely seasoned and delicious. The outstanding item was the pork carnitas. Large chunks of Jalisco style seasoned pork tips, with choice of tortilla, refried beans, rice, and an avocado salad (more like a chunky guacamole). The large chunks of meat shredded easily and reminded me of a German Schweinhaxen in appearance. The Jalisco seasoning was outstanding and enhanced the meat. Service was prompt, courteous and attentive, something we have rarely experienced in the post-Sheltering era of the past few weeks (usually slow service, wait staff covering too many tables, and requested items not being provided until long after they were asked for - and sometimes after they were no longer needed). None of that monkey business here. We wish them great success! We will be back!
