Wonderful view, excellent service. The food was all very good ... with some room for improvement. A steak ordered medium rare came almost blue rare. Prawns were significantly over done. The cocktails were a bit weak. All in all a memorable meal though.

Rooftop views during sunset

We were staying nearby and needed to grab dinner quickly before meeting up with friends. This place was recommended by a few people on Reddit so we decided to give it a shot. They have dining on the 1st floor courtyard but we chose to dine on the 2nd level. We were seated immediately and was able to admire the post sunset sky. They take card here and everyone speaks English which was a plus. Food came out fast and the servers were on top of everything. Knocking down a star because it's on the pricier side and we ordered the rice, although we knew it was mole, I wish they would've advised us it's more of a sweet side dish rather than savory. All in all, great service here.

Flank steak and ribeye

Nice lunch, and we were actually the only ones in the restaurant. Food was amazing, not the best steak we have had in town but definitely good. Great flavor. We didn't love the salsa options. Probably wouldn't return but still enjoyed the lunch.

Everything about this place was PHENOMENAL. We sat on the rooftop so we had a nice view of the sunset and San Miguel de Allende. Our server really took the time to answer any questions we had about the food and drinks as well as give us recommendations based on what she thought we would actually like vs. what was just popular. The service was also prompt. When it got cold, they offered us blankets. As for the actual food and the drinks, no complaints. Everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered the ribeye and New York steaks, and the red snapper. I also recommend actually trying out their desserts. The corn bread is my personal favorite. We tried this place because it was the closest restaurant to our airbnb but we were absolutely not disappointed!! Edit: Our server's name was Diana and she was amazing !

Great service and food! Thoroughly impressed by the dishes we had. The roasted cauliflower was especially delicious.

Not Mexican - thanks yelp. Now we're here and tired after a walk in the sun to find Mexican Nice courtyard and friendly service.

Mole

This place has the best mole plate I have ever tasted in my life. The taquitos were vegan so they were amazing as well. I had the pina colada cocktail and it was great! I love that they had a lot of vegan options for someone like me who's lactose intolerant.

We stayed at Hotel Madi and La Dona San Miguel was literally 2 doors down. Superb dining experience for a party of 8 at this place. The setting, ambiance, cuisine and most of all service was fabulous! Loved the bone marrow, which had a smoky, garlicky flavor to it and the flautas! Reason for the one star short of perfection was the tortilla soup, which hubby & I found to be extremely salty for our taste. Others in our group were happy and satisfied with their food choices (too many to mention) but overall, I highly recommend it. Cheers!

Pantorrilla de puerco

My wife and I spent the better part of 12 hours making our way from LA to SMA for a week long getaway; we wanted a classy meal without a wait..La Doña exceeded those expectations. The restaurant is situated along a busy road in town; inside is an open air, Mediterranean themed dining area - very romantic. We were seated immediately and greeted by our server, Sylvia (Silvia?) - funny, energetic and just as classy as the ambiance. She offered drink recommendations and allowed us to review the menu. Cocktails were outstanding! My margarita was the slightest bit sour with none of that sweet mix we use in the US...one of the best I've ever had! Upon returning, Sylvia asked for questions about the offering - here's what I REALLY liked...she respectfully challenged our first thoughts and encouraged us to try the specials...I'm so thankful we did! I ordered the pantorrilla de puerco, a bone in leg of pork braised to perfection! My God, it was so amazing! My wife ordered a braised short rib, equally delicious but far richer than the pork. Both were plated exceptionally with no waste, everything on plate was gone by the end. Sylvia asked for our preference of wine, we're cab drinkers and can be a bit picky. We tasted a La Casona cab/merlot - it was balanced with a beautiful black fruit finish - great choice. We were encouraged to have dessert and, again, took recommendations. Sylvia recommended the buñuelos, generally a kid's snack that tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch in my experience, well...not here. Again, sophisticated plating and great balance. Truly a classy dessert capped off with a perfect cappuccino. I can't say enough about my experience at La Doña, the setting, the cuisine and, most of all, the service exceeded high expectations. Saludos a Sylvia por su hospitalidad!! Finally, and importantly, we were out the door WITH tip for around 150.00!! This was a $300USD+ experience in the US, no doubt!! Winner, stop by for sure. Notes Amex accepted Cocktails are on point Trust your server You can pass on dessert - not a sho Tip well! They work at an intense pace to make you feel special

Tuna tostada

I'm giving it 4 stars because of the slow service plus smokers everywhere. I know it's allowed but it really killed the ambiance, everyone was smoking and I just can't stand it. The food was amazing. The tuna tostadas were fresh and more than enough for a starter. I then ordered the chicken mole, which was perfect, and my husband had the rib eye, also delicious. We didn't love the chocolate cake, it tasted weird to me, maybe the brandy? I had the afrodisiaco mezcal drink and I loved it! Will come back before leaving San Miguel (hoping smokers aren't around).

Shrimp Tacos
Katharina E.

What an innovative menu!! We ordered the shrimp tacos and the cauliflower. The cauliflower comes with a Gorgonzola sauce that is SO. Delicious. The shrimp tacos cooked to perfection. The place was quite pricey for what the food was but service was attentive.

Amazing! Tremendous service from Elizabth. Great cocktails and beautiful setting. Prices very reasonable for such delicious food.

Tortilla soup

La Doña had incredible ambiance and decor. Their food was amazing the octopus seemed to have a bit of a chipotle flavor but I really enjoyed it. The corn soup was delicious but felt like it could have been served slightly warmer, we had the cauliflower app which was good too. We also tried the shrimp tacos and some of the meat dishes I think pork and beef. The service was great the food was excellent, and the drinks were great too. Highly recommend!

First, he brought out a very big bowl of tortilla chips. They were excellent as was the accompanying pico de gallo. I had the chicken street tacos, which were also terrific. Even though there are hundreds of YouTube vlogs of varying quality about San Miguel de Allende,…read morechef Pati Jinich was the one that triggered my interest in coming here through her long-running PBS travel and cooking series. She went to this particular traditional restaurant known for their signature dish, Molcajete. The term first refers to a Mexican mortar bowl made of basalt volcanic rock standing on three stubby legs. The same term also refers to the food inside. It's quite simple because it's all about the ingredients and the execution. Jamie W and I ordered the MX$550 Mix Volcanic Bowl where they grilled large amounts of arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, and cecina (cured beef) while heating up the molcajete. The meat was then layered in the bowl along with nopales (cactus), green onion, chiles, peppers, and queso blanco cheese. A spicy green chile verde sauce was drizzled all over the gluttonous mix (Photo 7). Fresh guacamole and creamy refried beans were served on the side (Photo 4). A stack of freshly made tortillas was provided in order to gorge on all of the hearty indulgence which continues to stream well after its arrival at the table. The total amount could've easily served four ravenous people with both the arrachera and nopales the delectable standouts. Out of blissful ignorance, we both ordered salads as if the volcanic bowl wasn't going to satisfy us. Jamie had the MX$135 Mixed Salad with lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pasilla chiles, mushrooms, and a rosette of avocado slices (Photo 8). I went with the MX$200 House Salad with lettuce, hearts of palm, cubes of chihuahua cheese, green olives, grape tomatoes, and red onion (Photo 9). Both were more than freshly satisfying as we were filling up on housemade tortilla chips with red salsa and fresh pico de gallo (Photo 5). The space was cavernous with plenty of room for large parties as families converged on this place. We could totally envision live music performances in here, especially with a long, fully stocked bar beckoning. Although I've seen mocajetes on random Mexican menus around San Francisco, I agree with Pati that this type of place would be quite successful stateside. If you're planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, I recommend following Pati's advice. FOOD - 5 stars...a deliciously eruptive volcanic bowl AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...huge space, plenty of room during off-peak hours SERVICE - 4.5 stars...efficient and quite accommodating TOTAL - 5 stars...trust Pati on this one RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? From our third stop, Le Pegaso (review: https://yelp.to/rmPAJsgLVf), we had to cross the cobblestone streets around the central plaza, Jardin Allende. Normally an uneventful stroll, it felt more precarious after three bar stops. We made it without injury though. This spot was a spacious, more traditional restaurant with two bars in front. Our group was seated around a dining table. I noticed our Tequila Paloma was a bit skimpier this time (Photo 7), perhaps an acknowledgement that we were tapering off our alcoholic consumption. However, we ended up with the evening's best plate, a pair of Emmoladas, an enchilada-like house specialty filled with shredded chicken and covered liberally in a savory-sweet dark chocolate mole sauce (Photo 8). I would definitely have that again. FOOD / DRINKS - 4 stars...tasty emmoladas overshadowed the tequila and the pomegranate juice (Photo 9) AMBIANCE - 4 stars...spacious and relatively calm SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive staff TOTAL - 4 stars...more like a real restaurant than just a tequila bar RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? Down home, streetwise…read moreand Mama's way of putting viands together, from the aromas, the décor, the atmosphere and the service extraordinaire!. This obscure place from outside, when you walk in becomes what appears to be a Hacienda along with a patio, Terraza and balconies all around and cantina where you walk in! Not only was this place beautiful in the most traditional of Mexican styles, with tiled and wrought iron stairs to upper balconies, built in shelves and niches withing stone, wallpapered and muralled walls, a typical bar inlaid with the structure with magnificent woodwork and an excellent bartender I might add, clay flower pots galore hanging from the balcony flooring, and an incredible full skylight, wall to wall, but that's not the best of it. The food. The food was magnificent. I have had many a meal in Mexico, I have tried many, many styles of regional cuisine, but I had never ever had the specialty of this house - the Enmolada! The unique specialty of the house at La Cocina Café del Viajero are Enmoladas which are a dish consisting of tortillas in mole sauce... stuffed with fillings of almost any inkling! Enmoladas are a established indigenous dish made with corn tortillas that is coated in mole sauce. This is what I had to have. First let me mention that the food here is incredible, overall. We obviously started with bottled water, a couple of okay Margaritas and some Modelos. As is the custom, we had the Guacamole, which was extraordinarily excellent, with homemade chips, really, really good chips. Someone at the table ordered the Enchilada Capital with Mexican rice - extraordinary and very picoso! To make a long story short, my order of the Enmolada was exquisite. Most folk like me, were only familiar with enchilada sauce, but Enmolada sauce is unique. The enchiladas are smothered in mole sauce, offering a exceptional merge of flavors that stretch from spicy and sweet to savory and smoky. Totally overwhelming the palate, as your tastebuds go in a freefall. They compacted shredded chicken, then rolled it, then garnished it with fresh toppings of crema and cheese. Wow! Needless to say, this was an experience! An exquisite location, excellent service, terrific atmosphere and one of the most life changing taste adventures I had in Mexico. Try an Enmolada, maybe here, it's terrific.

Staffed by three buddies who have all worked in high end restaurants (here in San Miguel as well as the US and Europe), this tiny establishment doesn't even have a sign outside (just take down the address and you'll see a sign that says "Hotel" by the door. Enter and ascend a flight of stairs and it'll be on your right. The meal begins with chips and a warm black bean dip (made with exotic ingredients they'd needed to pick up the previous day in something that sounded like a drug deal!). Next order the mushroom soup--a highlight of our 7 day trip to San Miguel. We also shared an order of guacamole (excellent as you'd expect, with thick chunky chips), and an order of Requeson (never heard of that, but turned out to be a cheese log with spicy/tangy flavor, served with hot corn tortillas). For mains, we had the torts de lingua (delicious if you're not weirded out by beef tongue), duck floutas, and the pork dish (Costilla en Abodo Oaxaqueno), which had excellent flavor but was a battle (large bone in the middle so difficult to eat). They've only been open for a few months and they have a few kinks to work out--the menu is not organized in a logical way (green salad and mushroom soup appear at the end rather than first). Meals did not all arrive together, but to be fair we were a large party (8), and ordered multiple items per person. They also need to update their Google entry, which failed to note that they're closed on Tuesdays. And as noted before, having a sign would be helpful. Remember to BYOB because they don't serve alcohol, but in the end that's yet another thing that makes this place an incredible bargain! We managed to eat VERY well for less than $16 per person. Just wish we'd discovered it sooner because we would've returned if we had time. Maybe for breakfast, which I hear is also fantastic.
