AVOID!!! I would negative stars, but in order to write a review, one has to leave a minimum of one star. The service was surly, rude, and unfriendly. The drinks were TINY and twice the price of other establishments. Although the place has ambiance and character, it's simply not worth enduring the terrible, rude service and overpriced, shabby drinks. This place presents quite the conundrum. If you ask anyone who's been to Guanajuato, they'll tell you about how amazing it is and how you just HAVE to come here. But then you get to Guanajuato, and you try to find the place. Thus begins the adventure... you find out sort of 'where' it is, the general vicinity. So you search around to find it, and you realize how confusing the alleys and backalleys of Guanajuato truly are. So you look, and you look, and you ask people, and people have sort of heard of it but don't really know where it is, and so on and so on... Keep going, my friend. When you find it, it will be worth it. We ended up asking at a local artisan shop, and the lady who worked there knew *exactly* where it was (okay, go left out of the store, and go to the left and the first alley you see, and then go to the next alley on the left, and then it will be on your left). So we were able to find it eventually, but I think that the search for it is part of the thrill. An initiation ritual that everyone must undergo in order to genuinely appreciate Clave Azul. Because there really aren't any signs, no advertisement, and most people don't know about it. It's tucked away in an alley inside of another alley, and even though most people have 'heard' of it, few can actually tell you how to get there. We came here two nights in a row, and both times we were really impressed. Their botanas are extremely tasty, and their selection of beverages is really nice. The service is always prompt and attentive- our friends are vegetarian and they made sure to bring us plenty of vegetarian options while also bringing some meat treats for us. The prices seemed reasonable, especially considering that you're getting an endless supply of snacks from 4-6pm. Enjoy!!! read more

My husband and I visited this establishment a few weeks ago in the beginning of June 2019. It was a very chill environment. I loved the decor although it was a little small. Service was good nothing over the top. The drinks were strong and the tapas were quite tasty. We were pretty impressed. Sometimes there's a gentleman playing a guitar, but overall they provide there own music. The ambiance is nice and friendly. I def reccomend this place for couples or small groups. The bathroom was also clean compared to most places. And if it helps my husband is Mexican American so he does speak Spanish and that helped. I don't know how well one could get by without speaking the native language though. read more

It's really hidden. We found about this place first on a video on YouTube, then we read about it. We happened to walk past it during our walking tour so we knew how to get back to it. If you use Google maps, it will ultimately direct you there as well, but its sort of a maze. Upon entering the front gate, you walk up the stairway on your right and up to the dining/bar area. When we got there it was empty, so we were able to snag a table for the group of 7 of us. We knew all about the free botanas (or tapas) between 2-6pm, when you order a minimum amount of drinks. So for the 7 of us, we had to meet the $1,100 peso minimum, we actually went over that because we order some premium drinks as well. So with each round of drinks, we got a round of tapas, they were overall very good and filling. Some roasted marinated potatoes, jicama and cucumber slices, soup, taquitos, and beef stew with rice. We left very happy and slightly intoxicated lol It's a really cute place with limited seating. It has a European vibe to it and I love that they were playing jazz through the speakers....until a couple of guys came in with guitars and started playing random requested music. read more

I was so excited about this place, saw a video on YouTube before coming to Guanajuato, couldn't be more wrong. Maybe because I'm white? However, my fiance it's not, even doing a report on this place for school. Let me tell you, whatever you read or saw, it will be different than what you ask, you will not get any special tapas with drinks. However, when a couple, both Mexican and neither white will be told every detail about what you read or watched right in front of you. I have done many travels, this really was B.S! This place is hard to find but worth tracking down. The little building is a dream for me, I love thinking of the history that has happened within the walls. The people who work there are lovely and you will not get bored checking out all the trinkets in this place. Drinks are tasty and the seemingly endless supply of Mexican style tapas just makes this place the best. You will never go hungry here. Found this gem through Yelp. It was a nice treat away from the hustle and bustle. Walked into the cantina and the men there were extremely nice. We ordered drinks and with every drink order we received two different types of tapas. The tapas were delicious. Must try if you are in Guanajuato. read more

I've lived here over 5 years, and I don't do Clave Azul, anymore. This guy's business model is strange. There is a minimum charge of like 100 pesos, and then you get botanas (snacks) that, basically, aren't really very good, and are parsimonious. Then, he has a reputation for padding the bill, so I haven't gone there in a LONG time. My first time he REALLY padded my bill, and I didn't know to count my drinks as I went along. The bill was like 900 pesos for what I thought was about 500 pesos worth of drinks. Most of the restaurants in Guanajuato are honest. It's a cute place, but I don't go for padding the bill by any restaurant or bar. That is just not cool. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star, because it is an interesting place, visually. read more

Maybe the coolest place to have a drink in Guanajuato!!! My wife and I were walking around Plaza San Fernando, passed an alley that was about as wide as your arms, so of course we had to go up it. Not far up was La Clave Azul and we're so happy we're explorers. We sat down for a beer amidst a funky shaped and sized bar with awesome art and newspaper clippings on the walls. Before long, the owner, Pompeo sat down with us and we ended up talking and drinking for hours. One of the best vacation experiences I've ever had and I encourage anyone who is in Guanajuato to visit. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! read more

Smallest alley off the Plaza de San Fernando, this gem of a bar doesn't disappoint. Be careful of the margaritas because they're really strong in the best way possible. Memorabilia from Mexico's golden era of film and super friendly bartenders, who helped us find our dinner location by walking us there. Only positive things to say about this place.
