Adhering to a strict photography policy, circumvented only through time and patience, expect to spend an hour in the two small chambers, mesmerized by the ornate netting on Il Disinganno and breathtaking Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino. Downstairs guests will also find two anatomical studies of human vasculature that long pre-date the "Bodies" exhibits touring globally

In the center of the chapel is the sculpture, the veiled Christ, which as it sounds is a sculpture of Jesus with a veil over top of him. The fact that it's carved out of marble is pretty unreal. It apparently only took a few months to do, and his intricate down to the veins in his forehead. That statue was very impressive, but equally impressive were the half a dozen or so other statues that adore the chapel. Many of them represent virtues, and it was truly extraordinary to see how much talent, precision and just played mastery went into these sculptures. You sit there and look at it and realize how good these guys must've been given how difficult it is to make something out of Play-Doh. There is an audio tour available that was helpful, as well as good signage throughout. It's very helpful to get tickets beforehand as the line was fairly long and I believe they limit the total number of people that are allowed to go in at any time. Downstairs is the area labeled anatomic machines, where there's an incredible dissection, primarily of the circulatory system. It looks like something out of the bodies exhibit, but was done in the mid 1800s. While this is a quick stop, the sculptures here are among the most impressive that we've seen. And while we're not experts, you don't have to have a degree to be able to recognize master level work. Bottom line, it is well worth your time to stop in and see these beautiful sculptures.

As I've said repeatedly since returning from Naples, there's nothing there that I'd describe as a…read more"must see" but if you stick around a while, there's charm and beauty to be found all over. Located in the Vomero district, a hilltop area wealthier than the districts that sit below it, is Villa Floridiana, the nicest park I saw in all of Naples. Inside Villa Floridiana is this, Museo Duca di Martina, Naples' only museum of ceramics. It's free to enter, features nice views, and clean restrooms. That it also features a wealth of ancient "ceramics" (think porcelain, mostly) makes it a nice little mental escape. Spread out over several floors, there's nothing much here to read about or learn. Rather, there's just a lot of pretty things to look at. Sometimes that's enough and here it was. I'd not plan a day around this museum but were I spending an afternoon in Vomero, I'd make time for both the park and the museum.

I was in the majority but I come with bias, harboring an affinity for contemporary art while knowing full well that this is not what anyone comes to Naples to experience. Certainly not among the best of contemporary art museums, Madre spans 3 floors and much of what's on display can be walked through quite quickly. A few things with English write-ups below them caused me to stop and linger but many more things caused me to walk on by while observing. Truth be told, you could be in and out of here quite easily inside of an hour if you don't slap on headphones to listen to something or pause to see if what's written is of interest to you. Madre is an "ok" museum that's maybe worth a visit if you're in the area with nothing else on your calendar.
