If there is one restaurant to go to in this beautiful wine district, this is it. Located in a…read moresmall hotel on a town square, it has, in the summer, both indoor and outside seating. We chose to sit inside. My wife, grandson and I had a dream of a dinner. Everything we ordered was fantastic from entrées to desserts. The service was wonderfully attentive and professional. I must admit that one of the reasons I liked this restaurant so much is that we had just spent five days in Paris, and prices at Vandangerot were about 40% less. We felt we were not only getting Paris quality food but at a huge discount. The wine list features local burgundy wines (we rode our bicycles past several of them in the ensuing days) that were superb and affordable - 30 Euros for a great bottle. A particular highlight was the cheese tray. There were about 15 cheeses and the four we took were supremely delicious. We tried to return the following Wednesday only to find that they were closed. This only means that Rully is on our must-visit list for our return to France next year.

It was pretty busy with a mix of both locals and tourists on the wine trail but we managed to find a table for two. It's a comfy room which I'm sure would be very cosy in winter with lots of dark wood and a large open fire. After a quick look at the menu and a glance at what the locals were having the plat of the day, which came with a choice of dessert and a 1/4 of wine for 9.20 euro, seemed like a no brainer. You get a choice of two plats and we both went for the cheese salad option which was a real winner. Lovely presentation, beautifully dressed and with four pieces of crisp and oozing campagnarde, yet again every bit of baguette was called for to mop up every last morsel. For dessert it was a dark chocolate mousse which was served in a traditional French water glass; a large portion of light, velvety loveliness. The food here is very much based on the traditional French cooking of the region, the other choice of plat of the day was coq au vin, and I would say this is no bad thing when executed this well. The wine list has some very fine local selections as I guess you would expect from even the more humble joints situated on the grand cru route. As the name of the restaurant suggests you are also going to get an excellent selection of beer to choose from should that be your tipple. This is somewhere that I will be heading straight back to with pleasure when I am next in the area.

The escargot with octopus is quite amazing, tender and the cream sauce is not too heavy. There were higher highs versus medium highs, but nothing failed. The fish was superb. The cheese course is excellent - do not miss it. The plates are sort of small, but our lunch was quite plentiful, especially with the amuse bouches, dessert, rolls, and so forth. We left perfectly full. It's all about taste here; it's a place to focus the senses on each bite, especially the first. This is masterwork cuisine. I'm giving it four stars because for the price...some of the dishes were not absolutely, totally awesome. But some definitely were. They were also a little quick with the wine selection process. I was handed the voluminous list and then verbally presented with by-the-glass options. Had to make a very quick decision. It might have been nice to have a moment to think about it, which I suppose I could have asked for. In any case, the by-the-glass wines we had were perfectly fine; the Loire white was average, but the red Burgundy was good. The staff treated us very well and we had a great time. I had foie gras which was on the daily special menu as appetizer. It came with 3 large pieces of foie gras on a bed of mushrooms. The portion was so generous, I could just had that for dinner. Then I saw the veal head / cheek stew on the neighbor table and asked if I could change my entree to that, and they happily made the change. It was sooooo good!!! The broth and vegetables were nicely flavored and the meat just melted in my mouth! Marked in my collection for Burgundy, DEFINITELY will visit again the next time we are in the region! Normally wouldn't order steak in a French restaurant, but given the high praise we did. Asked for extra rare. Came out medium and tough. Couldn't eat it so asked for a replacement. After conferring with the chef, they did cook another steak for us. Wasn't much better. There are better and less expensive places to go in Paso. Sorry I'm not one of LPC's fans.
