La Buena Vida is a small, well known, breakfast spot in the neighborhood. The food here is really excellent.
The interior is simple and functional. Plastic chairs and tables, a concrete floor, and some sort of plastic sheeting for a roof. There are two main ordering areas. One in the left hand corner for tortas and other dishes and another straight ahead as you walk in, for fresh squeezed juices and shakes.
It's a family run place. Anybody whose lived in the neighborhood for a while will know the folks running it. Apparently, years ago, the same family used to own the hardware store across the street too.
There are about 10 or 15 tortas to choose from. All with whimsical references to Mexican things. For example, the Cubana torta comes with huevos and references some mexican-cuban dude who was a cross dresser that everybody knows about. I'm told they're all pretty good jokes but I didn't get any of them.
The tortas are all excellent. I've had a bunch of them. Freshly made, not too greasy or fatty. The juices are freshly squeezed to order. There are many suggested combinations like celery + carrot but I mostly stick to grapefruit juice, which is very refreshing.
The people working here speak zero English so it's a good opportunity to practice your Spanish, if you're into that. The neighborhood is working class. Very concrete and makeshift. You can get an idea from the link below. Oh and they're only open for breakfast.
