I was in the neighborhood and bought my first ever authentic French croissant here. The croissant was truly delicious and flakey. There were a lot of other breads to choose from and a few beverages. I was hoping coffee would be for sale but I don't think they had some.

Items Tasted: Jesuite Apple Pecan Tart Canele Madeline Chocolate Pistachio Snail Red Fruit Snail Butter Croissant Told by an elderly local the day prior that Bordeaux's best pastry was an rustic tart sold at a place simply known as La Boulangerie near Basilique Saint-Michel it was with breakfast plans slightly altered that the small shop on Rue des Faures was visited, the smell of wood ovens perceivable at a distance while yeasty notes drifted lazily in the air. Certainly more obvious in its placement than other bakeries, the open square surrounding the church dotted with several cafes and stores, my 7h30 arrival found a small queue snaking to the sliding glass door and stepping aside to let locals pass as I perused the options the temptations proved quite copious, my eventual order featuring a half dozen standouts plus one dud. Always benefited by an early morning, four of the selections still warm to the touch, it was with a slightly dense core that the croissant was presented, yet but with ample notes of butter the flavor was on point while the citrusy madeline featured execution so perfect that it would have made Alain Ducasse blush and Proust weak in the knees. Not offering an almond croissant, the sugar topped Jesuite a poor stand-in as frangipane had melted through the base leaving the rectangular object dry and dense, a return to form was found in two golden coils wound tightly around fruit, nuts, and chocolate, the bright red version delightfully bracing in its sourness while the neon green escargot wad expectedly quite rich. Hopeful that the best had been saved for last, though neither the tart nor canele were amongst the options purchased hot, bites of the latter found the exterior amongst the most crunchy tasted to date and although the custard was more firm than some may think appropriate the taste was still textbook, the mellow vanilla a perfect segue to object that I'd come for, each bite finding the sweetness of roast apples married to toasted pecans by a flaky charred crust.

I Love this boulangerie The Team is Great and they have Four different Typ of "escargots de" which i love!!!!!!! The Baguette is Good as well and the prices are fair.

I fell in love with the amazing contrast of caramelized chewy outside and the fluffy, eggy center. Not to mention they taste like the best vanilla cake with a hint of rum. There are two main canelé producers in Bordeaux with many outlets around town - La Toque Cuivrée and Baillardran. Having tried both, I preferred La Toque Cuivrée slightly more for their stronger rum flavor and better outside chew. It's also nice that the price is a third of the other brand. Both brands make canelés in a small, medium, and large size. After many taste tests (and some more for good measure), I found that the medium size had the best ratio of outside chewy crust and soft inside. Baillardran had notable visible specks of vanilla bean in their largest size and prominent vanilla flavor, but La Toque edged them out with their superior rum taste. Either way though, you can't go wrong. Now if I only I could find this level of Canelé in the US!

They mostly sell Candelés de Bordeaux with a few other pastry items on the side. The candelés were great! They are small sweet pastries with a crunchy sugary shell and a chewy center. Definitely a must try when visiting Bordeaux! We were able to get a box of 8 medium sides candelés for 4 euros. -- Service -- This is a walk-up window bakery. They do not have a public area inside or seating. They do accept credit cards and speak enough English to make a purchase without any issues. -- Location -- The bakery is located on the Promenade of Saint Catherine, near the Apple store. It is a great location for people staying near the many tourist areas or if you're shopping on St Catherine.

French-Japanese bakeries are some of my favorites (I went to one almost every day when I was in…read moreToyko), so I was happy to find one in Bordeaux, with matcha flavored pastries, and other beautiful French pastries. The bakery itself is beautiful, with light colored marble, high ceilings, and you can peek into the space in the back where the pâtissiers are making the pastries. The pastries are all beautifully displayed behind glass and they have a few tables so you can have a cup of tea, coffee and your pastries. We got the matcha choux which was really nice. It had a layer of matcha crème pâtisserie on the bottom, then a layer of matcha crème chantilly in the middle. The choux pastry was nice and fresh and I thought the matcha flavor could have been a little more pronounced and stronger, but it was still delicious. Having the two textures of the crème pâtisserie and the crème chantilly was nice, but I preferred the crème pâtisserie layer more. We also got an Oyatsu in the vanilla flavor (they had praline, matcha, chocolate, and a few other flavors) which was more like an egg/milk Asian bread/pastry with a more solid custard-like filling in the middle. The bread part was more bready (like a brioche or if you've ever had Chinese pastries) than a pastry or sweet bread that is more in the French-style. My husband liked this better than the matcha choux but I preferred the choux to this. You can't go wrong with the pastries here - make sure you stop here when you come to Bordeaux as it's a little hard to find Japanese-French pâtisseries outside of Paris in France.
