OK, so after the Montalivet fiasco and in search of a restaurant that wasn't La Boite aux Sardines (our favourite), we turned right along the beach - another round trip of about 5k along the beach. Going this way, you don't need to dress till you reach the dune exit and the blockhouses (some great graffiti drawings - look them up)
So far so good...we did the walk, we climbed the dune, and just by the restaurant, I managed to trip over the kerbstone and went flying - knees, elbow, hands, scratches, holes, blood everywhere (turns out I broke a bone, the pisiform; and 7 weeks later its still not mended)
Anyway, a German couple helped my partner to get me to my feet, the carpenter working on the corner shop, brought lots of water to wash away the sand, loads of kitchen towel and plasters - not much use those...we staggered to the restaurant, where a lovely waitress took us in, sat us down and brought out a huge medical kit including some oxygenated water and off I went to the bathroom to "freshen up" as blood seeped through everywhere
At table, eventually, we looked at the menu, having ordered a bottle of La Rose Pauillac and water to help calm down. The most attractive thing was their house burger...it sounded amazing, though difficult to know as the place was almost empty (end of season)...yes, a burger!
The answer is WOW. Yes it is a burger but not as you know it...all the trimmings, yes...but not minced beef...but chopped up steak. A couple of guys passing, looked in, looked at the menu and mouthed to me "bon?"..I said absolument, and in they came - when we left, they were tucking into theirs and nodded "approvingly"
She said this was their first year; the owner is the chef, and (note to others) 2 waitresses, a barman and the chef kept the whole show on the road with no stress...and they made our day a little less traumatic with a mixture of good food, good wine and a whole lot of kindness
Meal (31) + wine (28)+ dessert (11) = €70
They are open during the winter, I think at weekends...support them; if you are there to surf or if you are local, go there, its very good
Strongly recommended; will return read more
