We had a great experience here. Both the owner/chef Olivier and the other staff member were very…read morewarm, kind, and helpful. We learned that the name of the restaurant means "kitchen in the middle of the room," which is literally the case here. We were served some hard salami as a complimentary treat with our drinks. The menu is minimal with only 2 options for each course (starter, main course, dessert), but this is not surprising as it's a very small kitchen with one cook. We shared a starter of crispy phyllo filled with stewed pork, veal, chicken and onions and each ordered duck and turkey parmentier as our main course. The food was so cozy and comforting. It was definitely more rustic than some of the other dishes we had eaten on our trip, but we really enjoyed all the flavors and would definitely come back. Olivier in particular was delightful. Even though he was cooking all the food, he checked in on us multiple times and ensured we were enjoying ourselves. This is a small restaurant and reservations are definitely required.

I'm sure their food is very good. I accidentally- made the reservation at L'llot in Paris. They asked abruptly to see my confirmation and as i fumbled with my phone as they were so forcibly rude. Such poor treatment for an honest mistake which could and should have been handled in a much more hospitable manner.

All staff are knowledgable about their sparkling wines, and the vast majority are thoroughly fruent in English. The chateau produce a wide selection of wines - sparkling and still (tranquille!), from the oaky Flamme D'or (Golden Flame) to the sweet fizzyness of Cardinale - a highly recommended sparkling red wine, especially enjoyed in a glass with strawberries on a hot summer day. The Chateau Gratien & Meyer invite people for wine tasting all year round, any time of the day (they do not close for lunch). The wine caves are currently being renovated, but when they re-open in June they will be available to tour. The chateau hosts a famous Jazz festival every June which is worth checking out - jazz and wine on the hill looking down at the river and town of Saumur is a perfect way to spend a summer Saturday! All in all, I highly recommend Gratien & Meyer, especially to those visitors to the region who are not fluent French speakers, or those who know very little about wine. The chateau is friendly and accessable, in gorgeous surroundings and the prices are very reasonable (6 euros for an award winning bottle of Cardinale or Saumur Dry, prices from 3 euros to 15 euros). Do note: the chateau is on a steep hill - there is parking both at the top and the bottom, but if you have difficulty walking make sure you park at the top, it's quite a climb!

What a catastrophe! The Loire Valley is the birth place of French cuisine, and this place, which…read morehas been taken over and revamped by people who I believe think they can make money because they own a historic place is a disgrace.. I was born there, and none, I say none of the items on the menu, despite their Middle-Ages sounding names was done right! The work on the premises makes it look fake, the kitchen spits out of-the-microwave, mushy/gooey kind of bland feed. I wonder why so many local/regular looking people get their feed there... O tempora, o mores! Oh, I know, this was the only place open on Sunday... Go figure! ..Nobody is going to complain though, their web site does not allow any feedback.! Shame on you! ********************************************** We went back there, 4 of us, 2 years later, and it had become worse, to a point the owner got angry, got out from behind the bar and theatened to punch us, because after 30 mn wait we had decided to just leave out of despair we'd ever get presented with a menu, let alone food... The guy is a real lunatic...and wife in unison... We went to an excellent creperie next door, where the owner greated us with a smile, understanding we were survivors of a trip next door... Just other viciims... As of summer 2014 the place is still open, few customers though, to many daredevils... :). The next door Creperie is still there... hence you know where to go.

The restaurant is very quaint and historic, located on the city square in Saumur. The food and…read morewine were both very good and reasonably priced but the service was erratic. I would still go there again as long as I had at least 2 hours to eat.
