Unless you were a good student and learnt how to read Roman numerals (the date is carved on this Arch!), you might fall on the group of people who mistakenly think of this Arcone as one of the old city doors. This is in fact a very "young" monument built in 1895 as part of the 10-year period of the city re-planning officially called Risanamento, but also known as the horrific demolition of historical buildings, Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball style.

Florence underwent an irrevocable loss of its history during that decade. This arch is for many the symbol and bitter reminder of the destruction of this ancient part of the city, really one of the oldest places in Florence (this piazza was the heart of the original Roman city Florentia).
Insipired by Renaissance architecture, and other than having given Piazza Repubblica a nice facelift, this building is criticized because the actual style differs form the true ancient style (AKA, it's a Renaissance wanna-be).
The inscription on the arch translates:
"The ancient centre of the city
from age-old squalor
restored to new life"
