WOW!
I found so many pleasant surprises when I finally decided to try my luck with this little gem. For the longest time had I avoided twinkling my toes up the steps into their little sanctuary of nourishment for two reasons:
1) I had incorrectly presumed that being sandwiched between the Universität on one side and the English Garden on the other, that it would be flooded with what we Americans affectionately call "douchebags", and
2) in my experience, places named after their street address are overpriced and try too hard to make themselves exclusive with little to substantiate.
My bad. Apologies extended.
First, the menu is perfectly within reason for its location in Munich. To give you an idea, we had two piadini, two bagels, and three Schorle for just under €20. I glanced at the Tageskarte, and most dishes seemed in the €7-15 range, with tasty options ranging from pasta to pork to vegetarian.
The design of the place is great too. There are two rooms, one being somewhat dimly lit, and the other making grand use of its large windows. I sat in the one with grand windows, which also contained a bar area and a cute little "cafe counter".
It took a few moments before I realised my posterior was comfortable esconced on a former foyer-bench, and our table was in fact a repurposed schooldesk. Upon studying the room more closely, I became more impressed by how well the various collections of furniture had been coordinated and brought to work together: a cozy couch paired with cinema seating around a massive table; an ornately painted green table whisking one away on its matching chairs to a beach resort atmosphere; striped textile stools matching in colour to the block designs painted on the neighbouring wall, etcetera...
The outdoor seating feels like a dockside restaurant/bar/grille, and I look forward to making use of it on a sunny day when I return here. Even outside, seemingly every type of outdoor seating imaginable has been made available, whether benches, wooden chairs, or even leather/pleather armchairs. For you nic addicts, smoking is outside.
The only drawbacks were the really loud music and the distracted service. I was happy that the music was at least not the radio, but it was so loud that I could barely hear across the table. Secondly, our waitress was so distracted that she would turn away from the waist for the slightest distraction even while we were actively speaking to her. Was she awaiting friends, or perhaps a super hot guy who always comes in at that time? Also, she could have told us the first time that we wanted to pay that one has to go up to the cute little cafe counter, as opposed to just walking away the first two times, leaving us to presume that she would return shortly with the check. That added about 30 extra minutes to us sitting at our admittedly cozy schooldesk.
So...now that school is out for the summer, you know where to go. read more
