Our first rental with Kyte & their surfer (the contracted employee who drives the car to you) was excellent, our second rental was quite the opposite, and seems to have exposed some problems with their business model. For several hours I received notices via the app and via text that my rental "time was approaching" and how exciting it was, then 14 minutes before the car was supposed to arrive I got a call that they did not have my class vehicle available. I asked if I could get any car as I had an appointment and was told yes, but I had to accept it. After agreeing to the other car I was told the vehicle would be there in 15 minutes. One hour later my car arrived. When I tried to extend the rental 30 or 60 minutes to make up the hour it arrived late, the app would not let me "no cars available". As there appears to be no way to speak to an agent, I used the app-chat and was informed of the same. Disappointed and next time we need to be somewhere on-time, I will use a company with people and a physical location. read more

I used Kyte for the first time recently and overall it was a great experience. My only issue is the price as I booked the cheapest car and used it from 12pm to 930pm and paid close to $300 after all the fees, tolls and gas were added. I love Kyte, but wish that the prices would be a bit lower in NYC. I often get last minute coupons but when I need to book in advance they are typically the most expensive option so I end up booking elsewhere. Otherwise, the experience has always been amazing. I booked two rentals one weekend after the other(both for a single day). The first car smelled like an entire foot to be honest. BUT my issue is that Kyte has two $500 holds on my account. cars were returned in great condition close to a month ago (for the first rental) yet they are claiming they released my deposits BUT my bank has evidence that no deposits have been released and if I go one more day....Kyte will charge the deposit and they get my $500. Kyte has not been helpful and they keep giving me a further date to expect my money or telling me to give the bank a STAN # to trace the transaction, something that no bank can use. If you rent from here expect to have your deposits taken from you and having to report fraud. I'm reporting that this company is a scam with the better business bureau and giving this review everywhere possible to help others. It's not easy right now and having a company rob you of $500 and another $500 is sickening and actually a real set back for me. $1000 total in deposits never returned and lied to over and over and over via their chat and phone lines. Scam...you might get the rental car, but....good luck getting your money back. read more

We love Kyte. No more paper works and time is the main reason we use again and again! We don't need to take Uber to enterprise to wait another half to pick up car and return again. My last experience was absolutely awful. First surfer lied about being at my place and left early, bounced my calls. Looked all up and down the block for him. He picked up once and pretended he couldn't hear me. Second one (which they could only do 2 hours later) claimed to be there 10 minutes before but instead was 15 minutes late, leaving me waiting outside for 25 minutes. Next time I'll just go walk the 10 minutes to Avis and then return it whenever I feel like, thanks. EDIT: Wow look the business owner responded to my comment. This is the THIRD rental I have done with Kyte. Pickups and drop offs were super smooth and easy. I was going to be late returning my car yesterday due to traffic, and the chat feature on the app put me in touch with a live "copilot" and they extended the time of my return to avoid a late charge. I am two rentals in and a big fan. The first time, my Surfer was an hour late delivery, which delayed our trip. The pickup was about 20 minutes late. But we got a credit from Kyte which was nice. Kyte, ugh, I love you, and I hate you. But my experience today just kind of tops it all, and I'm not sure if I can continue recommending or praising this company. But yet, 3 stars because when it all works, I'm pretty happy. When I found Kyte, it was a too good to be true situation, sort of. They'll deliver and pick up the car from my home? Amazing!! Their hours leave something to be desired, but so do the other major car rental services (looking at those guys who operate 9-5 during the week, close at 1 on Saturday, and don't open at all on Sunday! Who does that work for??). The issue with Kyte is that there's some sort of major disconnect within the company. On multiple instances, I've had difficult pick-ups. The app will tell me one thing, and then a call or text will come in telling me something else. And if you can find the phone number to get a customer service rep on the phone (go ahead, try and find their phone number), they'll tell you something else entirely! I was once told that the surfer was running late, and that I might have to keep the car overnight (this is a problem because I'm in NYC, so I'd have to either search for parking or pay to put it in a garage). Another time, I received a ticket for their expired inspection, and I had to fight to be relieved of the responsibility for this cost! Today, I was really regretting my choice to use Kyte, but in the end, they did come through and work for me. Talk about gaslighting. I had a reservation for 7am, which I booked well enough in advance, and at about 6am, they informed me through the app, that due to "a system error", they wouldn't be able to get me a car until 9am. I was using this rental for work and needed to drive 2 hours to get to a job site, so 9am wouldn't work, and I was risking my job with this flakey company. I was stuck and pleaded with customer service, who initially offered me a $10 credit for the inconvenience, and eventually, they offered me a full refund! But I was in a jam and just really needed this car. Finally, they told me a surfer was able to "rescue" my trip (thank you to Keisha and whoever's car I diverted!!), but the communication about when the car would come was really lacking. At that point, I had little trust in the company, and half expected that they'd keep moving the ETA until it was 9am (she'll be there between 7:10 and 7:15, no, 7:20, no 7:30....). Your driver is there (but they're not). It was a real rollercoaster, all before even starting my work day. But did they deliver? Yes!! Was the car as clean as usual? No. Was the gas tank mostly empty? Yes! Will they charge me to fill up the tank at their rate? Probably! Anyway. I'll probably use them again, but probably not for situations that aren't flexible, like work. Be warned. It's a good business model, but it's poorly executed. Oh, and the app is AWFUL! It has features that don't work, it randomly makes you sign in, then redirects to the website, and it's just not user-friendly. Kyte is like a flakey old friend who's given you little reason to keep the relationship alive, but you just love them too much to let them fade into oblivion. Are they reliable? No! Are they easy to get in touch with? No! When you can get in touch with them, is the communication clear? No! Do you trust them when they say they'll be there? Believe it when you see it. My Kyte experience was great. I picked up the car at the appointed time in my Brooklyn neighborhood. No hassle at all the Kyte person took my information after I scanned a code. During my trip I got a toll charge - the next day Kyte sent me a notification and charged my credit card. I then asked to change the location to Manhattan where my car would be dropped off. I used Kyte for the first time the past weekend. I was a little skeptical of this at first because I never used it before and I never heard of it until my mom sent me information about Kyte. I compared prices from Kyte to 5 other car rental companies and this was the most affordable one AND it included drop off and pick up so it was a really great deal for me. The drop off was easy and the Kyte Surfer, Ricky, made it smooth and I felt comfortable. The car was clean and the gas was full. I liked it a lot. Pick up was easy as well! I just had to hand over the key and make sure I didn't leave anything in the car. Kyte is really generous with the milage as well. Even though you don't get unlimited milage, you still get 300 miles per day and it's great because you don't have to worry. Also, advice for the readers...it's better if you re-fuel yourself because Kyte will double charge you! I will definitely be using Kyte in the future when I plan long distance/long vacations. read more

Booked a trip and then had it auto cancelled because the app stated I didn't pass their verification requirements. I reviewed the requirements and don't meet any of the rejection criteria. When I sent an email to support to get more info, I got a vague response that provided no additional info or path to resolution. Just a k.thx.bye, that felt like an auto-generated response. I had the most amazing first experience. The pickup location was located near my house. Picking up the car, the staff member was efficient, gave me a review of the car and notified me of the sprcual features. This was a newer vehicle, so i appreciate the factor thag the surfer took his time. I was in and out within 15 minutes, of pickingupthecar. I LOVE the 2 hour grace period, I ran into A LOT of traffic on the way home and wasn't stressed at all because I knew I had a 2 hour window. I will definitely use this servic e again, and would probably chose this over Turo. read more

TL;DR: I left my wallet in the car and notified Kyte within 20 minutes. They made no attempt to return the wallet, lied, claiming saying they hadn't found it, and eventually made me come pick up my wallet a week later, after I filed a police report. Negative comments left on their Instagram were deleted by their team. Full story: 20 minutes after returning my rental I realized I left my wallet in the vehicle. I immediately attempted to contact customer service. Unable to reach anyone by phone, I was given a generic google form to fill out, and did so. To try and speed things along (it was my wallet after all) I texted the number I was from which receiving updates (i.e., delivery time, etc) and was connected with what I believed to be a customer service rep of some kind. What followed was a day long exchange where I waited on average 2 hrs for a response from the representative. I will quote some of the messages here: Me: " Hi sorry to bother again, is there any update? I would really like to get this back asap." Rep: " We'll reach out Eric~" I was eventually told that: " They checked in the middle of console. There was no wallet. We asked them if checked the floor and cup holder. We'll get back to you on their response." And later: " We're sorry. The car has already cleaned. The team found no wallet in the car." I then notified Kyte that I filed a police report, and began to replace my wallet. Fast forward exactly one week from the date of the incident and I received a text, " Hi there! We have confirmed your lost item is at our lot. Would you be able to pick it up from our lot this weekend?" Upon arriving at the lot, I spoke with the lot managers and the one returning the wallet to me commented "why did it take you so long? I found this wallet a week ago." Kyte mishandled this situation in every way. A few other important notes: During this process, my girlfriend and I decided to attempt to contact their social media in order to make some headway. After posting our situation on Instagram, we were met with a response asking us to DM them directly. Upon DMing we were met with a generic response and no further assistance. We raised this issue publicly again, i.e., commenting on their IG that we had DMed them and received no further help. That comment was promptly deleted by their social media team. Kyte is not transparent, nor helpful with customer service. They are inept at best and outright lying to their customers at worst. Do not use this service. read more

I was so impressed with Kyte overall. I was hesitant to try something new, but the rate was lower than other places so I tried it. It was so easy. They will deliver the car to you or you can pick it up. I chose to pick up as the pick up was right on 57th and 11th and super easy to get to. The cars (I rented two) were both great. The Kyte surfers were really nice and accommodating. I was able to extend my rental multiple times with ease. I rented a car over a holiday weekend which makes me queasy at best. Fortunately, everything worked out well as far as pick up and drop off without any issues. Doing any kind of car renting, sharing, or owning in this town is challenging. I get it. The convenience of Kyte sure beats commuting to Times Square to pick up a car. I did receive a mysterious and confusing text message saying that my surfer would arrive between 12:15pm and 12:30pm when I had scheduled a delivery for 2:30pm. The cars this company offers ARE NOT UP TO DATE on their documents, and you risk getting stopped and fined because of it. This makes them ILLEGAL to drive! Do not rent from them! The safety inspection was expired (I live in NYC, and you need this inspection to drive and park in the city, or you would get a ticket). I contacted customer support and explained my situation. They kept saying that the car was safe to drive and that if I got a ticket because of that I could open a dispute. I sent them the DMV website stating that cars must have a valid inspection sticker. The person talking to me was not even from the company and was no help. Their logic is that there was no problem unless I got stopped by the police. Complete scam! Horrid experience. I'm convinced that the entire company is run by kids who have no idea what they're doing and that the place will soon implode. I've been renting cars for 20+ years. Think cable company customer service - then think worse. Much worse. e.g. 1. The car was filthy (mud, bird poop, bug splatter, etc in and outside); 2. they overbooked their cars, so they tried to cut short my trip and delay someone else's. It is easy to rent, the surfer delivers the car and you can wait at home. There is no other car rental company like this and I think it is an extremely innovative system. I am from Japan, and if there were such a rental car company in Japan, I would use it. There are some downsides. There are good surfers and unfriendly surfers. Some surfers are late sometimes. Also, I am not sure if this is a system problem or a surfer problem, but sometimes I get a message saying "The surfer has already arrived and will be waiting for you there for 10 minutes" even though the surfer is late and has not arrived yet. This seems to be the biggest improvement. If the surfer could not meet us within 10 minutes, he would leave. We felt the time limit was burdensome because we were given a time for the surfer to leave even though he had not even arrived. It would be better if those points were improved. We have used Kyte twice now, and we're loving how much time we're saving. The only thing that has been a upsetting is that both times we left items in the car by accident. It's kind of hectic handing the car off in front of our building in a small window of time and making sure we, and our kids, have double checked the car. We left brand new Ray Bans in a case the first time and my son's wallet and air pods the second time. Both times I immediately contacted Kyte, but they have not recovered the items. I know it's our fault for leaving items in the car, but we have left items in other rental cars, hotels, etc. and pretty much always got them back. In the this case, I don't understand why they can't just contact the surfer and whoever received the car and see who has our things? read more

Trip from hell! First, the car was delivered dirty, with a crack in the windshield, and with white writing on the windshield obstructing the driver's view. I thought this was crazy and when I called to tell them.. they said they would offer a $15 credit for the future (which I didn't accept). About 15 minutes before the trip ended, I was texted that the 'surfer' would be delayed. That's fine, but I asked for an estimate because I didn't know if that meant 10 minutes or two hours.. so I could figure out what to do since parking in my neighborhood is a challenge. The customer service rep replied by explaining what ETA stands for (yes, really). Then.. I got a two minute notice that the person was arriving in two minutes and would only wait 8 minutes for me. THEN I got a call saying that was a mistake and they would be there in ten minutes. Handed off the car and just when I thought it was sorted, I got a text saying the fuel wasn't full and I would be charged. I ran outside, caught the surfer.. and asked to take a photo of the over-full fuel gauge. What a frustrating experience. Cannot recommend Kyte... unless you like waiting for hold for customer service multiple times a day and because left irritated and confused. This is more than start up kinks. I've used Kyte several times and found it to be very convenient and reliable. The surfers have shown up on time for both drop off and pick up. The cars have been very clean. The rates are extremely competitive, especially since they come to you. Not having to pay a surcharge for Kyte to refill is also a big advantage. I've recommended the service to friends who have also had good experiences. They've recently added some new vehicle classes which makes me hope they'll continue to expand and include additional luxury vehicles. read more

We can't tell you how much we love this service. We recently gave up our car because between parking, maintenance and insurance in nyc it was stupid. Had I know about Kyte sooner, we would have done it sooner. Kyte is a pleasure with free drop off and free return, plus the flexibility to change your schedule for these features. The convenience of having the car delivered is truly amazing, and eliminates the waiting at traditional rental care companies as well as the frustrating searches for available cars through Zip, etc. Also, the cars are in great condition, and the prices are reasonable. I made a reservation on Kyte and got a text stating my driver's license needed to be verified at least 2 hours before the reservation. It is 5 days out from the reservation (I didn't have the time to upload my driver's license yet) and they just canceled my reservation for not uploading it.
