I concur with Lee who says Ky Chow is his favourite Chinese restaurant. I've been many times and it has never disappointed in quality, consistency, service and an all round great experience. The honey king prawns are to die for. Massive, moist, tasty and so decadent. They have a little bit of batter but it's so thin that it doesn't feel fatty at all. There's just the right amount of honey on them and some crunchy noodles too. Absolutely love the Hawthorn ribs. They are small and tender. One doesn't get in too much of a mess! Another favourite dish is satay chicken. Actually, now I'm also remembering the amazing duck pancakes and the green beans. Now I'm getting very hungry.... Just go there - and bon appetit! Like a more upmarket Kwik Stix, this restaurant has some seriously tasty mains and some decorations to complement the environment. Lunch here is amazing and the prices although a tad high for street cuisine were shockingly affordable. Staff were very attentive, pleasant and polite, a great combination for a restaurant. Now for the most exciting part, the food. Lets just say that my expectations were definitely reached. I ordered two entrees to start and three mains between the group I was with and we devoured almost every little piece. For the entree, we feasted upon vegetarian spring rolls which were flavoursome and very indulgent. A little hard to handle with chopsticks however well presented and a great way to enter the Asian food at the Ky Chow. After the spring rolls came the dim sims and I found this to be quite nice. I reckon the spring rolls were better but the dim sims made from pork and tofu (perhaps) were still good although not as tasty. The entrees were reasonably priced and were decent in sizing proportion. Again, a great start to the meal. Drinks were a tad expensive in my opinion though, as a glass of Apple juice was $3.50 and they gave you a glass half filled with Apple juice but mainly a lot of ice. I had to end up ordering two of these to be satisfied however three would have been more ideal. Now onto the mains. Lemon chicken was brilliant. Best I have ever had. The tempura better was minimal yet not puffy. The chicken was fresh and the lemon sauce was applied with the right consistency and flavour. A pleasure to the tastebuds and great on the pallet. The second main was the lemongrass beef and this was a great combination of mildly spicy beef with onion and lemongrass. It was well seasoned and looked absolutely amazing when served. Slippery with chopsticks but thank god a spoon or fork was provided otherwise I may still be eating there now. The Kung Pao Chicken was very spicy however the combinations of nuts, capsicums and a spicy sauce really went well with the steamed rice. The dish was tasty and a favourite amongst myself, however the real winner was definitely the lemon chicken as it was so very unlike any other Chinese we had ever had. For three mains, two entrees and 5 standard soft drinks/apple juice drinks, the bill came to $89 which was pleasantly surprising for the quality of the food. read more

On the busier nights head to Ky Chow (same owner as Ying Chow). Being fairly large, it can be a little easier getting a table here than other popular joints along the strip. She's in my top 4 (my shortest possible list) of Gouger St. cheap-eats, along with: Evergreen, East Taste and Ying Chow. Ky Chow's got the signature Gouger plain box interior, but with slightly fancier fittings. Confident servers and tasty prices (under $15). Try the 'crackbeans' Peking string beans with minced pork. The best Chinese in town. It's been our go to place for a quick, tasty meal for the last 10 years. Their take away is also super quick - usually 20 minutes from ordering. Sweet and sour crunchy beef is a must. The Adelaide Chinatown classic dish BBC (tofu, soy beans and pickled cabbage) is so delicious and good when you want some green on the table. Salt and pepper tofu, chinese pancakes, lemon chicken ... so many delish dishes. We always get steamed rice to share and the portions are generous. It can get very loud (as most busy restaurants do) and the food comes out when it's ready so it's best to order food to share. The service is almost always good, but on the rate occasions it's not, the food makes up for it. It will be our go to for years to come! read more

My absolute favourite, value for money Chinese restaurant! Ky Chow has been a favourite for sometime, with many a return visit resulting in the same brilliant experience. Always ordering the crispy beef, shallot pancakes and the beans with pork mince has meant that I haven't tried a huge amount of other items on the menu however when you find something as good as that beef you just want it again and again! On that note, I have also tried the satay beef, a pork belly hot pot, sweet and sour pork, the salt and pepper squid and the very delicious garlic bok choy! All have been flawless! The price is also very very right, I've never paid more than $20 all up - normally sharing food with a few others- and I always leave full to the brim! They key to this place is its simplicity and freshness of food served every time. There are also some legendary food items on the menu that you can't not order every time. - BBC (no idea what it stands for but it's got damn good beans, tofu, chilli and a sauce that will make you want to lick the plate clean) - Sizzling anything (it'll sizzle your schmizzle) - Bay Berry Duck (the chef has recommended it) don't ignore him! - Shallot Pancake (sounds simple and nothing special - don't be fooled! Order 10 even if there are 2 of you because you will fight over who gets the last) The service here is incredibly quick. The meals aren't cheap but they are fantastic value for the quality of food you get and the non-existent MSG in all food. Dinner for eight with a couple of beers and bourbons thrown in and the check was only $160! Best of all the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered copious amounts of food... Chicken sweet corn soup, green onion pancakes and appetizer plates for starters then onto nine or so main course dishes including fried rice, salt and pepper calamari and prawns, chicken cashew, sweet and sour pork, a dish that reminded me of a slightly more authentic general tso's chicken etc etc. the food just kept coming and each plate was delicious! Second visit to this restaurant in three years (because we live in the U.S., not because the food is unmemorable!) and the food has been amazing both visits! I attended Ky Chow with five friends the other night. I was my first time eating there and I love the fact that they have a dedicated gluten free menu. As a coeliac it can be a pain eating out because so many places/dishes are off-limits (gluten free was not a choice I made haha). However, the gf options we selected were delicious (I loved the fish) and as six of use shared four dishes and rice a $13.40 bill at the end of the night for each of us was a decent price. Worked nearby for a number of years and came here at least weekly with colleagues. The Shan-Tung chicken is brilliant. Very large serve of roast chicken with spices/seasoning/soy sauce and priced appropriately. Definitely my go to dish. Have had most other dishes on menu - roast duck was good and a unusual one I came across, some type of beef/chicken dish in a large bowl with sprouts and a 9/10 chilli broth was quite nice. Again some of the dishes which don't use whole/roast animal are a bit scrappy for my liking, but that really is pretty standard for this type of cuisine and shouldn't be considered a negative for the venue. Lately, Ky Chow has overtaken East Taste as my favourite Chinese on Gouger St. Since East Taste's renovations, they have upped the price a little, so unless it's late at night on a Friday or Saturday Ky Chow is number 1! It isn't the cheapest place but the servings are generous, the food is delicious and of high quality and the drinks are cheap. Plus everything comes out super fast! I was just there for my birthday dinner last night and we ordered what I consider to be the perfect Ky Chow selection: Shallot pancakes Shan-Tung chicken (I DIDNT EVEN KNOW CHICKEN COULD TASTE THIS GOOD, WE ORDERED 2) Sizzling black pepper beef Bayberry duck BBC E-shan eggplant clay pot (which can be hit and miss but on this occasion was hit, thank you Birthday Gods) String beans peking style The salt & pepper squid is also always delicious. The service was worse than I ever thought was possible, the floor was sticky and there were so many bugs flying around. We waited half an hour and had to wave down the waiter and please ask if we could order a drink. We then got 2 out of three drinks ordered another 20 mins later. Then we waited over an hour for any food and everyone around us got their food and most sat down way after we had our booking. Tonight was the third time we've been in the last 12 months, but never again. Six of us went out for my brother's birthday. We ordered and the shared entree came out quickly. After the entree the 3 of the mains were served one at a time over about 15 minutes. I had to ask twice for the other 3 mains, only 2 of which came out after more than 20 minutes. After asking 3 more times over another 20-30 minutes, the last main for my brother was served. After asking the second time, we discovered that they had written down only 1 order of ribs and not the 2 we had asked for. But they still had to check and correct the order the third time I asked. The head server(?) came out and apologized and after we complained, he eventually offered that one meal free. Of course everyone else had finished their meals 15 minutes before my brother's main was served, leaving him to eat separately from everyone else. The service this time was terrible and some of the food not very good. The other 2 times the food made up for the mediocre service, and we thought the level of service was because they were extremely busy. Tonight they were nowhere as busy. It seems poor service is the norm. A special mention for the Crispy Duck with Pancake, I think they meant mummified duck. They served part of a duck carcass with a thin dried out layer of "meat" clinging to the bones, You were left to scrape the dry "meat" off the bones onto the pancakes. They've lost at least 6 customers who will be going to the many other chinese restaurants within walking distance of this one. read more

The food was very tasty. The great thing about ky chow is that they serve there food at a cold temperature. The only way to get warm to moderately hot food is to apparently order something sizzling from the menu. Also the waiters are really good at there job. One managed to convince us that our food is meant to be served cold. However Offerig 10% off our bill really did compensate the fact that our food was cold. Overall the coke was really good to wash down the hard cold food. read more

Had dinner here in Dec 2014 and I have to say I was not very impressed. We had a long table with around 15 people dining with us. Meals all came out at very different times and ours were cold. The Dim Sims were tepid at best and did not have a nice flavour. they were sliced from a "loaf" and had a texture like spam or fritz... not great. Waitress spilled soy sauce down the back of my friends t-shirt. Over all the experience was OK but I would stick to my usual haunts in future. read more

This was some of the worst service I have ever received. My wife was given her food and mine did not arrive for nearly 20 minutes afterward. This was with a nearly empty restaurant during lunch time and the wait staff didn't seem to care at all. They were completely aloof as patrons who came in well after us received their food. Overall the food taste was also so-so. I had the crispy spicy chicken, however it was more bone than chicken. Generally a good experience but today the restaurant was overbooked and unable to handle demand. This resulted in slow service, spilt meals on the floor, obviously running out of tablewear so staff were clearing tables before patrons were finished. I luckily received an elbow in my half finished meal as staff reached over to clear a just finished plate (we were still eating as a table). I was introduced to this place by one of my martial arts instructors. Now as well as being a martial arts master he is also studying nutrition at Adelaide Uni. He preaches the benefits of cooking in coconut oil and always takes in his own jar of coconut oil into any restaurant he eats at. If they refuse to use it to cook his food he walks out. Thankfully Ky Chow are most accomodating. He frequents this place quite regularly, and I go with him from time to time after a class for some dinner and a catch up. Every time without fail out comes the jar of coconut oil, and the staff just know. He's been there enough times. I've been here with my partner as well on other occasions. She's a big fan of mongolian beef, and this place serves the best mongolian beef she's ever had. As for me, I try to have something different every time. The shallot pancakes are wonderful and yes, the satay is great. With that said, one dish I find myself returning to is the crispy beef. It's crispy, and it tastes great. My partner recommended Ky Chow as he had eaten there a few times a couple of years back, so we thought we would give it a try for takeaway tonight. The positives were quick service and also discount on takeaway if you pay cash but unfortunately that was where it ended. The food was incredibly bland overall for Asian cuisine and our special fried rice ended up being a big tub of steamed rice with a couple of cocktail prawns. Hopefully it was just an off night but for future diners I would recommend dining in instead to avoid takeaway disappointment. read more
