I hate going to Chinese healers. The medicine they prescribe looks like mud and tastes bitter and smells bad. I remember having it when I was a kid and decided as an adult I would not drink it again. That being said... My mom had a stroke and I was so stressed that my body started to not function properly. I was so tired that I could not sit through a dinner out and had to immediately go back home to lie down. Background- im a tennis player that plays almost 7 days a weak. I do weigh training and in great shape. Nothing i did helped. Went to many western doctors. Did blood tests. Talked to doctor friends. Nobody could help me. I was desperate. Thank comes my tennis partner to the rescue. He told me to go see this herbalist. No needles - cause I deathly dread that too, he promised me. Just go try it out. I didnt. No way was i doing that! He basically had to come pick me up and drag me there. I waiting 45 mins for my turn on a Sat. Talked to him for 5 mins as he takes my pulse. Prescribed me some dirt made into muddy water. They even helped me boil it and put in in cups that I needed to drink for 7 days before going back to see him - that's where im at. Drank my 7th one this morning. Now looking forward to getting my next 7 because it has made a night and day difference. Give him a try. He might be able to help you! read more

Went to see Dr. Shen for tennis elbow for alternative treatment. After 4 sessions, not only did I not experience any improvement but developed severe allergic reaction from pain patch he gave me. Had to go to urgent care to treat allergic reaction. Tried to claim insurance but this place doesn't offer any assistance nor respond to insurance inquiries. Ended up going to occupational therapy and they fixed my elbow tendinitis in 6 weeks. read more

I spent thousands of dollars buying products, herbs and tenths of sessions acupuncture after a severe flu. After two months still no better and continued to have diarrhea. He stated that my body system was compromised and brought down by the serious flu and I've been accumulated a lot of toxins in my body due to my emotional stress and treatment will take time. I had to endure the pain of needles and bitter herb every day only to feel worst and unable to function after two months. He stated I need to follow exactly instructions to make the treatments work. He constantly rush through the pulse checking every time only to focus on selling products to other customers. Shorten my acupuncture session due to his own delay catering to other customers when I was on time with my appointment. Did not feel any better after two months and felt like he blamed me for not getting better. During this time, he did not listen much to what I had to say. If he did, as a doctor, should realized I lost a lots of electrolytes. At one point I started to suspect the reason I felt so awful was because I lost a lots of electrolytes due to diarrhea that was never cured. I then went to an IV therapy to replenish the electrolytes and flushed out all the toxins. The headache, brain fog ,nausea, and extreme fatigue got better. After the flu and all of these mistreatments, my body is beaten down. The recovery is prolonged and I endured unnecessary suffering. I then called up my Taiwan friend that recovered from cancers years ago. She advised me to replenish electrolytes, take the Ganoderma capsules that she sent me. The Ganoderma brought her back to health and treated her fatigue after cancer treatments. My recovery would have been sooner and much less suffering if he made correct diagnosis. Not to mention I wasted thousand of dollars buying his products. No, I will not go back to him, ever! read more

i used to think Dr. Shen was 50% doctor and 50% business man as he loved to promote his products. now, I think he's 90% business man and 10% doctor. Me and my husband got sick recently (cold, flu, covid, whatever, definitely not life threatening), we spent $1000 on herbal teas and other supplements. Yup, $1000!!!! His supplements are average 25% more expensive than a Gingseng shop on Irving street. He sold me 2 pills 安宮牛黃丸，$135 each!!!! That's is for someone who has a stroke this could save a life, and it's only $85 at the store on Irving. He also tried to sell that to my husband. The worst thing is, I got better for the first 3 days, then I have not improved for the past few days while keeping drinking his tea and taking the supplement. when I went back to see him on the 4th day, he didn't even ask me my symptoms. He just took me pules and looked at my tongue, then urged us to wait in the car for the herbs. He missed that I started having nasal infection!! His herbs used to be quite effective for my family although he was expensive and loved to promote his products, not sure what happened this time!! NO GOING BACK, EVER!!!! read more

Called beforehand to make an appointment for acupuncture and ask if they accept Aetna insurance. They said they do. But when I showed up, I have been told I need to pay the full amount and if my insurance company compensates them they give my money back. I have read another review about this so I knew I wasn't gonna fall for the same trick. That is not how "in-network" insurance works. Why would I trust a verbal agreement that I will get my money back? I am already paying for insurance and if you claim you are in-network it is your responsibility to deal with insurance company and get your money. You can't ask patients to pay the whole bill up front. Thanks for waste of time. read more

We frequently visit acupuncturists and decided to give him a try since our regular doctor was booked up for a month. He seemed just ok, pretty unprofessional and sadly I think he tries to make money off of the medicine that he prescribes. Acupuncture itself is ok if you don't mind doing it from chair in the waiting area (there are only two rooms, which most of the time are occupied). We spent $100 on some herbs he prescribed which I have no idea if they are even necessary or effective, in addition to $70 for acupuncture. He does not accept any type of insurance. In retrospect, I think he is simply out to make the most money possible. I doubt that we would come again mainly for ethical reasons, and we are unsure whether he is effective. read more

Dr Hseh is knowledgeable and prescribed the right herbal mix to get my overheated liver back on track -This nudged my blood sugar levels lower and helped solve a knee pain issue. I am part Chinese and was raised on Chinese herbal remedies so this was a natural go to. He also sells prepackaged antiviral and allergy medications at extremely reasonable prices especially compared to the big chain health food stores. Been a customer for over 4 yrs. custom herbal mixes are pricey but not too out of line with western treatments-these are quality, sometimes difficult to obtain herbs. I've never been an acupuncture customer however. read more

I went in for a band aid because believe it or not someone suggested in try a Traditional Chinese band aid, herbal Yunan Baiyao Band Aid, which has a herbal concoction, made of all natural herbs, no chemicals. I tried it and likely no surprise to anyone, I could've gotten Walgreens band and had the same result. I'm not gonna lie: in noticed no difference. But the five stars are for the customer service I got there, which was helpful and genteel. Would go back for a specialty item. Prices are reasonable and a vast array of Medicinal goods. read more

Old Chinese candies are smell like mothball in here. Ewwwww! I don't know why they sell lottery and out dated chewing gums. But, there is a Chinese medicine. I've never feel comfortable but the Doctor was a nice man. His prescription is his hand writing in Chinese. I could see that the Chinese characters means, wood or tree, grass, weed, stone and powder, something like that. Oh Man, this doctor is serious Chinese Herb Master! He might be a KunFu Master too. I took my younger son there because asthma few years back. It was really CHEAP like a Beef Chowmein. I had to boiled the FUNNKY Chinese Herbs, and it looked like Day Old Miso-soup, smelled like ##%#^&&x!x, and taste like MUZaFXXKER! Really. He had to drink the shit for 3 times in a week for about couple month. But, after couple month, he got better. I am very proud of my son drinking the disgusting SHIT, but, in my opinion, the SHIT worked. There is an old Japanese sayin' that Good medicine taste bitter. But, FXXX, can you imagine drinking that looks like mud, smell like crap and taste like shit? You need a great courage, bravery to drink the shit. Every time I walkin' by here, I get the mix feeling of that where the heck the herbs came from. Is it legally imported from China? I don't know. But, I say this, No matter HOW BAD that Chinese imports are, Please Do not under estimate the old traditional Chinese Herbs. Sometimes it works and No side effects at all. Well worth a visit. read more

Not sure how I feel about this place. I will just list it out and see if helps you. (I went to see him for my back spasms and locked up muscles) 1.) Dr. Shen definitely knows what he's doing. (He's the third person that's done accupuncture on me). So, you're in good hands when it comes to accupuncture. 2.) The store and the exam rooms are a bit "hole in the wall" ish....if you can get over it -- it will be for the better. 3.) The accupuncture was only $40, but he prescribed a rubbing balm, medicinal patches, and some herbal tea. All of which smelled like.....well, best description is that is smelled like EVIL. All and all....it came out to about $90. That's where I have the problem. I think part of his schtick is to get you to spend money on the medicine. Frankly, i think the patches were just like stinky icy hot patches.....the tea was awful....and I didn't even use the balm ( I didn't want my coworkers to barf). So, I'm conflicted about how I feel about this place. One reassuring thing is that I spent way less here than at Ginger something in Glen Park and got results about 100 thousand times better. I can't believe that Ginger place got 5 stars. The "accupuncturist" was this blonde lady that looked like she just graduated from a party university and came into my a.m. appt looking like she was hungover from a party in the Marina District. Every needle hurt and at one point said, "Ooops, if that hurts, let's not part one there then...." At least with Dr. Shen, you are getting a real practitioner and a master of his craft in his own culture (not some college drop out who decided to get a certificate in accupuncture after she blew daddy's money in college). read more

This place is awesome, I don't take western meds at all. They have a great selection of products. It's best to know what you are looking for, And see what they have. This is a small store though well stocked. I go in and get the 2 or 3 items I use and I'm good for 6 months. read more

Dr. Shen is an acupuncturist and a professional traditional Chinese doctor. He used to work for military emergency department for decades. DR. Shen is one of the most respected, eminent and caring doctors I've ever seen. Three years ago, one of my family members had a life threatening emergency situation ,all the western doctors tried their best but failed to save him( including doctors from Stanford). We were desperately tried to find new doctors. Introduced by a Chinese friend ,we contacted Dr. Shen.Without hesitation,he drove all the way from San Francisco to Bay Area and save our loved one with his professional acupuncture and Chinese medicine within one hour. His ability to perform this miracle was admired by all of us. We appreciate Dr Shen's kindness and professionalism. Good doctors are those who genuinely care about patients. To us, Dr Shen is an angel sent by God to help people. We want to say thank you to Dr Shen, and wish you all the best! read more

Yes there's a resident herbalist here and they do sell chinese herbs but what people don't know is that this place is a grocery store too. They carry an extensive stock of cookies, candies and other chinese food stuff. In a pinch and don't want to go to chinatown or Clement? You can pretty much pick up dried foodstuff such as vermicelli here. Prices are decent. read more

Dr Shen was amazing. He made my seasonal allergies shorter and a lot more bearable. This man works magic. Highly recommended!

The doctor is good but his prices are painfully high. The herbs work well but its just too expensive. Hes not much into conversing with others so if you do get herbs, ask a ton of questions. He'll give you a one word answer or nod but keep asking away read more

I have been going to Dr. Shen for well over 10 years possibly 15 and he is a master at his craft which is accupuncture as well as herbs. He and his herbs have helped me so much over the years that it is amazing. It took along time for me to get used to drinking the herbs but once i got it down it is much easier and they work! The front of his office is also a grocery store so don't be confused by that. All accupuncture takes place in the back in private rooms. This is a professioanl place for those who are serious about accupuncture and chinese herbs and all the it's healing benefits. If language is difficult Linda who works in the front of the store can translate. well worth a visit and remember accupuncture takes several treatments depending on the problem. read more

I don't think I've been in here for herbs, but I've definitely been here many times for drinks and snacks. They have a fridge in the back with lots of vitasoy and other cold drinks. And I just love the smell of Chinese herbs? read more

The doctor is readily available on a drop-in basis. He's definitely a man of few words. But that doesn't matter to me because he IS a real healer. I've been going to see this guy over the last 10 years, for maybe 5 or 6 episodes of acute muscle/joint injuries. He rubs and massages the area until you're almost in tears. I've also tried the accupunture and so he puts about 6 pins in you around the injured area, then applies these clamps to the pins that are attached to a little voltage generating machine. The end result is your muscle twitch. Then you're left under a heat lamp, staring at boxes of dieter's tea for about 30-45 minutes. Afterwards, he disconnects you and gives an awesome massage. It's hard but effective. I walk out after paying 40 bucks feeling dazed but much better. Usually it takes 4 or 5 treatments to heal my injury. Well worth it~ I only subtracted 1 star for the lack of cleanliness. The guy eats lunch and answers the phone while giving me a massage. And he doesn't wash his hands. read more

Been having a bad shoulder ache possibly after being rear ended a month back so I decided to give this place a shot. First visit was to scope the place out and it seemed legit - the store front was divided into the Chinese herbs and meds section and the other side all the Asian spices, snacks and grocery items. Linda who mans the cashier was really helpful too in answering queries about insurance coverage and she speaks English so that's great especially when my mandarin / Cantonese comes out in drips and drabs! Second visit was today and the consultation took place in the back room. I have to admit I kind of like the strange sensation of the acupuncture and it was comforting to me and I liked the Minty smell of the salonpas and the pain relief oil that he slathered onto me. He sent me home with 2 bundles of herbs which I have to boil and make tea. The mixture wasn't pleasant but it wasn't too nasty either. This is my first Chinese medicine and acupuncture experience here in the US. I believe in Chinese medicine and it seems more wholistic using the herbs. If you want an alternative to western Meds for your pain, definitely give this place a shot and come with an open mind. read more

I have been coming to Dr Shen for at least four years now for migraines, back and neck aches and other ailments. I have always felt great improvements with the treatments, and even more so with the herbs. I have never found the herbs to not be fresh. For as bitter and nasty as they taste, I think they do miracles. My migraines sometimes give me awful nausea and I cannot hold a painkiller in my stomach, and Dr Shen gets me out of my rut. Sometimes he massages can be a bit harsh, and that must be the Chinese way through suffering, but I am not shy to say it. I highly recommend this place! read more

I get instant relief of cold and throw up symptoms after Dr Shen's acupuncture and Tui Na treatment!

This is my very first review on yelp but I feel this place deserve it because I had such a benefit since I started drinking the herbal teas that I got from the doctor in here. The place is very humble, like a general store plus Chinese herbs plus acupuncture office and feel like you are in china, if I'd ever been there, full of Chinese herbs bags everywhere and it smell exactly like it. I got in, and in minutes I was able to see the doctor that after feeling my pulse immediately nailed my major problem. After determining how many days of herbs packages I would need before my next visit he put me in the massage table for an acupuncture session. As soon as I got the needle in my back I went into a very deep sleep and that was awesome in its self cause I was to able to sleep well for days. After that I got my packages and the whole session plus the medicines was very reasonable price although I do not have an insurance that pay that I thought it was a pretty good price. I religiously made my teas and drank them everyday and I still have to find the time in my hectic schedule to go back and get my second round but I immediately felt the strong benefit of drinking those teas and my circulation has improved drastically, i like this place, very authentic very real. and the doctor and his wife are very nice people and I can tell he knows very well his craft. I would recommend to anyone who is in search for a Chinese doctor and herbs place. read more

Hate to do this... But I'm trying to save some people from making a mistake and potentially hurting themselves... I tried this so-called Master a hand full of times, each time I couldn't figure out if his acupuncture helped or not... This man doesn't ask many questions but gives the appearance that he knows what's going on... So I usually roll with it... Here's the story... the last time he dressed me up with needles, he definitely had the electrodes (electrical current) way too high, my muscles and nerves were twitching "machine gun" style with hard thumps!!! The worst thing was that the session should only be 30 or 40 minutes... However, the man left me connected like the 6 million dollar man for about an hour and a half... yes. 1.5 hours... that's 1 extra hour... !!&*^%!?... The whole time I could hear him next door fussing with his herbs and unloading boxes... I'm definitely sure that he forgot about me, stupid me, I actually thought that it might be a good thing, getting extra time... Yeah right, the results art that my nerves are constantly buzzing now, I feel like there's a constant flow of electricity going through my body and nerves now.. it's already been 2 months... WTF!!! I just don't have enough evidence to pursue a law suit... Another acupuncturist said that high volts/watts can hurt the nerves... That day "F" my system up... That's all I have to say, I'm pretty pissed off... Dude is to busy selling candy, medicine, counting money and etc. and hasn't kept up his training... Once a master, or whatever the "F" you want to call it, is not always going to stay a master if one doesn't continue learning and training and taking the health of his patients more seriously... How does someone expect to remember every set of nerves and pin points so precisely as needed?... These doctors need to be regulated for quality control... Anyhow, that's my experience, time for some sleepy tea to calm my nerves... Hope you consider my experience and do some research before choosing an acupuncturist... Good luck... read more
