What he's noticed most of all is that people, who are desperate to stay on the road, are asking him to put on their spare tyres when thy get a puncture instead of buying new ones. These are people with very little money, either drawing the dole, or in minimum wage jobs, where often their hours have been cut. But, without a car their chances of improving their lot are significantly reduced. It's a vicious cycle! Ronnie does what he can to help, but it's clear that he finds the situation demoralising on occasion. Nevertheless, he has a wealth of experience behind him, and a solid set of shoulders with which to carry the present burdens. Being an affable soul, with a sense of civic interest, coupled with a good sense of humour, he will do more than survive I'm sure.
