Good customer service, very helpful. Service was fast and didn't take much effort getting all visa and other paperwork done.

My recent experience with the Croatian embassies in the U.S. was truly appalling. I first called…read morethe Croatian Embassy in Chicago at (312) 482-9902 to inquire about the process for voting in local elections in Dubrovnik from abroad. The male representative who answered was shockingly rude. When I asked for guidance, his exact words were: "I've never had anyone ask me that question in 12 years." When I requested a follow-up after he consulted someone, he bluntly said he had no time to waste on it. I asked for his name, and he refused to provide it. Hoping for better assistance, I contacted the Croatian Embassy in Washington, D.C. A female representative answered and informed me that I could only vote in presidential elections, not local ones, from abroad. When I politely asked for her name for reference, she responded by yelling at me: "Why are you asking me for my name?! What is your name?"--in a completely unprofessional tone. I've never encountered such a lack of professionalism and courtesy, especially from representatives of a national embassy. These positions should be held by individuals who are trained to assist citizens with respect and competence. Shame on you, Croatia, for allowing such poor representation abroad.

Fitting that I'm the first to review the Consulate General of Portugal. Meu Pai (My Dad) comes…read morestraight from Northern Portugal so as a result I also have Portuguese citizenship. I've engaged with the Consulate General of Portugal on two specific occasions both of which were to get my Portuguese identification. The first time was to start the Passport/ Blithe de Identidade (I.D. card) process back in 2006. During my first few conversations with them, I was told I was not Portuguese and couldn't get a Passport. After numerous attempts to get an appointment they told me on the phone that I needed to fit various prerequisites in order to apply for my passport. Those prerequisites were, 1) my parents had to be married at least two years before I was born. 2) my father had to have registered their marriage withing at least one year of their marriage. Now I don't know if these are standard or specifically for me since I know they make obtaining an E.U. passport difficult for those born outside of the E.U. but luckily I fit the bill. I then had to provide the following documentation in order to obtain my identification. 1) My mother's birth certificate 2) My father's birth certificate which by the way, Portuguese birth certificates expire every 6 months. I have no idea why but they do. 3) My birth certificate 4) Proof of US residence 5) My parent's marriage license (which they had on file). Once all my paperwork was gathered, they sent it to Lisbon for approval. Within a few weeks I was cleared for my citizenship interview which was one of the most interesting interviews I've ever been in. First of all, they don't like speaking English here very much. They all do, fluently. But the majority of employees there are older and wear tacky knit sweaters with shoulder pads from the 80's. As frumpy as they come so you can imagine that they don't like dealing with people who speak little Portuguese yet are granted citizenship by their government. In any event, I was asked the following striking questions during my interview. 1) Do you believe in sex before marriage? 2) Do you attend Church? (I was raised a Jew. At this very moment I was a good little catholic girl). 3) Do you believe in having children out of wedlock? I can't remember the rest of the questions but those were the most memorable and as you can see for good reason. After a few years, the E.U. changed their standard passports to contain the chip so I had to get a new one. This time my dad, step mother and little brother went with me. My father and I were the only ones allowed beyond the lobby because we were citizens. My step mom and brother are not. Since my father is fluent in Portuguese they refused to speak any English and when I didn't understand I was spoken to sternly. Way to enforce lingual pride! Working with them in Portuguese on getting this new passport was quite an experience since I had to stand in-front of this giant machine that scanned my fingers, face and diligently traced my signature. Quite the experience. I guess you can say I haven't had the best of experiences with the consulate general of Portugal but it was so funny and unique to me to deal with the government of my second homeland that I just can't give them a terrible review. Até logo por agora!

My passport renewal went smoothly and was relatively quick - 35 minutes total from the time of my appointment. I did have to wait an extra 20 minutes on top of that since I arrived early, but that was understandable. Some tips: - I noticed that there were some other visitors who tried to come in over an hour early and were turned away at the entrance, so definitely plan on coming here as close to your appointment time as possible! - If you are able to, you should definitely bring original and photocopies of all the required documents so that your appointment goes quick. There is a photocopy machine available, but I'm not sure how much the fee is to use it. - Make sure you bring cash since they don't accept card at the cashier. My only reason for giving them 4 instead of 5 stars is it was somewhat difficult to get questions answered prior to my appointment. Their main phone number would just play an automated message, and the extension line to the passport section would also just play a message since nobody was picking up. I think that this can be rather inconvenient especially for anyone who is traveling far (possibly even from out of state) to get to the Consulate.

Yelp Review 2026 #25:…read more The nearest Philippine Consulate General office to where I live is in Los Angeles. But I was in New York and had to take care of some documents so, I figured, I might as well make an appointment and do it here. I followed everything listed on their website and made sure I had everything with me to take to my appointment. They're located near Times Square. I arrived 30 minutes early and they had just opened. People were already waiting in line and I thought I picked the earliest appointment available. There were chairs but not enough. They asked me what I was there for and was directed to go to the basement. I gave them my documents and I was told I was missing a document. Like how? Why didn't you list it on your website??? After going back and forth and trying to stay calm with the man behind the counter, I just left and booked an appointment in L.A. I brought the same documents and it was approved.
