It's mainly European paintings, but some sculptures are scattered in small rooms and hallways throughout the building. While I didn't enjoy the art here as much as I liked the ones at the Alte (I just like old paintings more), the building here is easier to navigate and has a much brighter atmosphere. This museum has a easy layout, just follow the signs for the Tour and you'll get through the museum easily. Admission is 1 euro here for Sundays too.

The museum has a good collection of Andy Warhol's art....the building itself is very attractive, including the exterior. Lastly, the personnel: there was a nasty guard at the entrance to the galleries, but all of the other guards were very friendly. Also, the woman at the Information Desk was *incredibly* helpful: We'd sent an e-mail to a friend who was supposed to meet us in front of the museum at a certain time - but unbeknownst to us, the e-mail never got sent. We needed to contact our friend quickly when we discovered that problem, but it would have been a costly international call if we'd used our cell phone. The really nice woman at the Information Desk lent me her own cell phone and therefore I was able to call our friend.

We were there for over 2 hours, and if you're really into history, plan to be there for longer. The building and collection is expansive. There are audio guides available in English. Every item has a descriptive plaque, but not every plaque is in English (which personally I was OK with just looking.l because every room has an audio file in English so I got the gist. Very well worth the visit!

Memmingen!! Came…read morehere on a very cold September morning to catch my train to Munchen aka Munich for Oktoberfest! Almost everything was closed at 7 am. It was a Friday! I don't think they opened till 8 or 9 am. And you do need to stay inside. September is freezing in Germany. I came from Rome in short dress and heels. If it weren't for that little café , I would've froze before I boarded that train. The station is small, cozy and efficient. The train came on time! Exactly at 8:05 am I believe. The café had hot coffee, cappuccinos and German pastries! it's probably their equivalent to 7-eleven but the donuts/ pastries were pretty tasty. Well that's how you know you are in Germany anyways. Everything tasted good. I wish they have heaters inside the space or even outside. But don't think they did. Not for inside walk ways at least. If that building/café wasn't opened....wouldn't been a long hour plus wait in the cold. Still was a long, quiet wait! But the pastries helped!

It's fairly hard to imagine that an extremely wealthy and influential family decided to dedicate a…read morecluster of housing, meant to mimic a small city, to those living in poverty in early 16th century Europe. Well, the Fugger family did just that and its 'experiment' in social housing has lasted for almost five hundred years. Visitors are able to view a 'model dwelling' decorated as it would have been during the genesis of this project. In an adjacent room a film (auf Deutsch) about the Fugger family and how it came to create the Fuggerei runs on a loop. Pamphlets at the entrance are offered in a multiplicity of languages (including Chinese and Japanese), so non-German speakers are also able to gain a solid understanding of what's what. The on-site WW II bunker is quite worth a visit. One sees how the Fuggerei was severely damaged during the war and how quickly and determinedly those in charge decided to rebuild. While I very much enjoyed visiting the Fuggerei, I was constantly aware of walking around a complex in which people live. One is cautioned to be respectful and to not 'take pictures'. It's hard not to look at the facades of all the buildings when one walks by them. Well, it's hard for me, at least. Being a fan of architecture, I walked the streets of Augsburg en route to the Fuggerei pretty much doing the same thing. I happened to walk past a small boy kicking a soccer ball around, presumably, the front of his Fugger flat. He scowled at me when I passed him. That's when I decided it was time for me to go. There is information regarding who is eligible to live at the Fuggerei (adherents to the Catholic faith) and how much one pays (0,88 euro annually & three prayers daily, apparently). What I wasn't able to find out was how one is picked to live on premises. Not that I'd qualify...

The story of the Fuggerei - a "social settlement" started during the late Middle Ages/early Renaissance by Jakob Fugger to help the poor and disenfranchised get their feet back under them and become self-sufficient citizens during a time where social Darwinism and caste-like class stratification were ravaging Europe - is one that will touch your heart and provide leagues of depth to your big picture understanding of life. It doesn't take long to come here, but the impact will stay with you for life. Added benefit: Almost everything that's written down is also translated into English.
