MECCA. I've wanted…read moreto come here for 40 years, and I finally did. The Bauhaus has been one of my main influences in my long design career. Sad that the iconic Bauhaus sign on the side of the building was under construction, but I'll just have to visit again. I included the Masters Houses on this visit, and thought they were much more interesting from the outside. Inside they were . . . nothing. Still. My love of the Bauhaus continues unabated.

The Bauhaus is a MUST for anyone who is a fan of architecture and design. I planned my trip to…read moreGermany mostly around art and the Bauhaus was on my list as a place to visit. I have been a fan of the Bauhaus ever since I was young. It was so surreal to walk the grounds and sleep in the Studio Building which is the former dormitory's of the students of the Bauhaus. I am a fan of Marianne Brandt as well as Gropius, Meyer, Moholy, Schlemmer, Breur the list goes on. It was an experience that I will never forget. I strongly suggest booking your reservations for the recycled hotel (boutique hotel) which is the Studio Building way in advance. There are only 20 rooms that can be rented. I would request one with the balcony. It took them some time to return my email regarding lodging. I actually had to phone them about it as well. They do not have a booking option on the website nor for the guided tours as well. You need to book your tour in English way in advance. It is 75 EURO which to me was well worth it. There is no wi-fi in the rooms. Just a simple room somewhat to that of how the students lived though I read a little different about the furniture in the students room and seen different pics as well. To stand on the balcony was amazing. My tour guide's name was Vincent. A lovely guy who is used to the run of the mill tourist who come to the Bauhaus because it is a landmark and part of the tour group they are in. So, for Vincent and I we had a great time. I knew a lot of the history so he shared more things with me. Like the famous stairs that were in Schlemmer's painting and the stage in which Schlemmer's plays were preformed on. Most famous one "triadic ballet". The mezzanine (canteen) is also part of the stage where the performances where held. There is just so much history here I would end up writing all day/night. The Bauhaus Cafe is great. I dined here twice. Then once at the Kornhaus restaurant another landmark of the Bauhaus. Be sure to visit the MEISTERHAUS DESSAU which is around the bend from the Bauhaus. This is where the Bauhaus Masters lived unfortunately the tours here are only in German. Buy your tickets to enter the haus's. Also just about a 15-20 min tram ride away is more architecture in Dessau that Gropius, Meyer and many others of the Bauhaus have built. That tour is in German only but I did it on my own. Took a lot of walking but whatever. I hired a cab to take me around. I strongly suggest dinning at the Kornhaus which sits on the Elbe River and has a great menu and outdoor patio with amazing service. I MISS GERMANY . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyhrMZB-WLo

On April 14th 2012, I went to see the show Entdeckung Korea. The exhibit was displayed in a dimmed…read moreroom, which gave it a mysterious feeling. Each piece was seperatly lighted to draw focus to the piece. First coming in to the dimmed room made me very curious of what was to come. A handful of people were there to enjoy the exhibit, which made it easy to discuss and observe each piece as there was little distraction. The show was focused on the cultural aspect of korean everyday life. Many objects such as mirrors, hair brushes, clothing and home made pottery were on display.A lot posters gave background information about Korean history. In addition a few paintings were displayed mainly by unknown artists. A piece that stood out was the waterfall brush painting, which was a metaphor for Korean seperation into north and south. Many paintings displayed were related to myths and showed connections between humans and nature. However they clearly conveyed the korean values. The religious theme was also stronlgy present in all forms of art, especially in the heaven and hell painting I first had an aversion to it, looking closer there were many things to discover and life was reflected. Although the pottery was detailed and beautiful to look at, it would have been interesting to see more paintings and be able to learn about korean artists. Overall it was a nice little show. The museums entrance guard was very helpful and informative. He allowed me to exhibit other parts of the museum which were not included in my ticket. After an hour I had seen evrything and became aware of the beautiful korean art.

We came to Weimar today for the purpose of visiting Buchenwald and it was quite worthwhile. The…read moremuseum was superb; it has three floors and very detailed information by each of the (myriad) photos. The third floor in particular was very emotional, since it exhibits large photos taken by allied photographers and the impact is incredibly powerful. There's also an art museum which has a rather large collection of prisoners' art - in addition to some sculptures done later - and that was also powerful. The place where I broke down was the crematorium; enough said....a documentary film is shown about once/hour in a large auditorium behind the Visitors' Center. The bookstore (inside the Visitors' Center) has an extensive selection of books (primarily in German), many of which are filled with photos. The café has a lousy selection and therefore we didn't bother eating there. To reach Buchenwald from the Hbf (main train station), take the #6 bus - and be sure you take the one marked Buchenwald and *not* Ettersburg. On M-F, there are two buses/hour going to Buchenwald from the Hbf (at 18 & 48 minutes after the hour) and there's only one bus/hour leaving Buchenwald which goes to the Hbf (at 25 minutes after the hour) - and the last bus departs Buchenwald at 6:25 p.m. The cost is 1.90 euros, and you may buy tickets on the bus with a 2-euro coin. (See my separate review for the Buchenwald Glockenturm [Clock Tower]).
