On a Tuesday morning, it was pretty quiet without schoolkids or large groups. There was nothing distracting me from enjoying the art. The exhibit of existentialist Bernard Buffet works was magnificent with a number of his pieces. Andy Warhol considered Buffet the "last great artist of Paris." Beyond that, Cy Twombly, Edgar Degas. Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh (I've never seen "Marguerite Gachet at the Piano" before and the "Self-Portrait with a Japanese Print" was amazing) , Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse (paintings *and* sculpture!), Alexej Von Jawlensky's "Self-portrait") and more. What museum would be complete without works by Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder and Salvador Dali? So much to see, so much to enjoy, so much to appreciate. It is one of the greatest art museums in Switzerland and I had a tremendous visit. Gift shop has lots to purchase but the prices for even the smallest prints are very high. The little kid in me had so much fun playing on the swing. Most importantly, this is one of the few places in Switzerland that actually has AC!!! So if the heat wave hits, and you need to cool off, come here! Took one star from them because there was a military related tent displaying old documentary, except the display has fresh red paint that's not dry. While I really didn't read the wet paint sign, I don't think you should put it on display until it's dry. It was a piece of cloth that can be moved after it's dried...

It takes quite awhile to go through all the galleries to see everything, especially if you read everything on the walls, too! It was really breathtaking to walk into a gallery and see the large Monet painting "The Water Lily Pond" hanging on a full wall; such a beautiful surprise. His "Water Lilies" was also in the same gallery. Definitely worth the visit and there's a discount offered (50%) when you present your BaselCard, which is a tourist card you can get for free from your hotel. 13.50 CHF (Swiss francs) at the time I went (November, 2023).

Yelp Review 2026 #138:…read more This museum was Albert Einstein's actual apartment he shared with his wife Mileva and their son Hans for 2 years: 1903-1905. Einstein's two theories of relativity were in proposed in 1905 and published 1915 so, this apartment is where Einstein spent most of his days and nights thinking about and testing his theories. It's a small and modest 2nd floor apartment. On the third floor is more museum items like his books, papers, recognitions, and a space where you watch a video so you can learn about his personal life and his career. I thought I knew about his life by watching "Genius". I knew about Mileva being his wife. And there's Elsa who became his second wife - what I didn't know was the fact that they're first cousins! They started their relationship (outside of being cousins) in 1912 and got married in 1919. Another thing I learned about Einstein was about his citizenship. He was born in Germany but he renounced his German citizenship to avoid military service while he was studying in Switzerland. He then got his Swiss citizenship which he kept his whole life while acquiring temporary citizenship in Austria and Germany (again) but renouncing it (again) due to the Naz! regime. He got his dual citizenship (Swiss and US) when he moved to Princeton, New Jersey. There's a lot of information all around this museum. There's a family tree which I found interesting. So, if you know anyone claiming to be related to/ a descendant of Albert Einstein, it's traceable. We bought our tickets at the museum. We got there a few minutes after opening so, there wasn't a lot of people. A few minutes later, it started to get busy. There's a cafe attached to the museum. I didn't get to check it out.
