The children are always happy and close bonds between them are created. The staff are lovely, warm and you feel safe in the knowledge that your child is being cared for by well trained staff who not only care for your children but also educate them in a way that prepares them for school. If I have any more children in future I will not hesitate with putting my child forward to attend this school. I wish all the staff and children the best of luck and we will miss them all very much.

Moreover, the scale of the school demands an intimate student/teacher relationship and enables relationships to build throughout the school life of the child. There are lots of extra curricular activities available here: dance and drama; athletics, netball and cricket, calligraphy and Wayfarers Bible activities amongst others.

I think as a child you can overlook the stress that your behaviour can put on them, magnify that by 30 in each class, and you're looking at one stressed teacher. I was always personally fairly well behaved - my mum was a teacher, so I took it a little easy on them - but some of my class mates, blimey! The teaching staff were great and did fantastically well not to lose their temper with some of the antics that went on! The school itself underwent many makeovers during my time, and I still live just a stones throw away so can see changes still happening - in a positive way though. The school is divided into two buildings, and essentially three areas: reception children are effectively segregated from the burly year-ones and "tops". For years 3-6, children go up to "juniors". There is also a nursery available through the week. The headteacher and many of the school teachers have changed since I was there, so I can't comment on teaching standards. With regards to the school building itself, there have been some improvements with new entrance doors, an enhanced play area, and new dining facilities. The building was decrepit when I attended school here; with smashed window, exposed brick work and a dirty, positively dangerous playing field, it needed more than a lick of paint. St Edmunds is quite a large school and accepts children from outside of the area and christian denomination, besides those of St Edmund's and/or St Thomas's parish. While I myself represent the progeny of this school, there is some stigma attached to St Edmund's and St Thomas's relating to the sector of society it welcomes or rather, acquires. Many feel it is one of the least respected schools,that is less exclusive- less posh, basically. I don't know whether that's fair to say, in my opinion it is true to some extent but not necessarily a disadvantage.

I didn't do too badly and nor did my friends, nearly all of whom went on to university, several at Cambridge. Merchants has had a bit of bad press lately with a few scandals seeping out of their well hedged boundaries. Unfortunately this is destroying the reputation it once had; there are always going to be scandals, there'll be successes and failures, what matters is the indivdual student and their attitude and response to the amenities offered. Merchant Taylors offers a good deal. The extra-curricular activities, for example, include Combined Cadet Force, Boat Club, Music and Drama skills, Swimming Club and the Gifted and Talented enrichment programme is well reputed. The school building itself, and the grounds are beautiful and have a great history, and in the main, the boys act as very good ambassadors for the school.
