The initial conversation went very well. Kyle came across as knowledgeable, professional, and confident. He took the time to discuss my brother's tax situation, explained a clear game plan, requested the necessary documents, and assured him that he would take care of the work. Based on those conversations, there was every reason to believe the tax returns were moving forward. Then the communication changed. I personally saw the text conversations where Kyle repeatedly made commitments such as, "I'll call you today," "I'll get your returns 100% completed tomorrow," and "Tomorrow I'll e-file your returns." After those commitments were made, my brother spent weeks sending follow-up texts and making phone calls simply trying to get updates, with little to no response. If there were legitimate IRS, documentation, or compliance concerns preventing the returns from being completed, that would have been understandable. A CPA should absolutely follow professional standards and should not file anything that does not meet those requirements. However, that was not what was communicated throughout this process. What I witnessed was a breakdown in communication, missed commitments, and a client repeatedly trying to get answers. According to my brother's experience, the refund was only issued after he stated that he would involve local law enforcement due to the lack of communication and inability to get a response. While I acknowledge that the refund was eventually provided, it does not erase the weeks of unanswered messages, missed commitments, and frustration that led up to that point. What concerns me further is that after reading other Yelp reviews, including reviews going back approximately nine months, I noticed similar concerns raised by other customers. Several reviews describe a similar pattern: a strong initial consultation, confidence that a plan was in place, payment and submission of information, followed by difficulty getting timely communication afterward. I can only speak to my family's experience, but seeing similar accounts from other customers was concerning and reinforced why I felt it was important to share what I personally witnessed. Anyone considering this firm should take the time to read both the customer reviews and the business responses and make their own informed decision. Based on what I personally witnessed regarding my brother's experience, I would not recommend KFN Accounting & Financial.

I emailed and called Barbara, she did not reply/return calls. I had to physically go to the office to get a response, which was her sitting behind a desk in a separate room and attempting to yell to me she did the taxes right, the IRS must be wrong. She said the First Time Homebuyer Credit from 2008 was waived by the government and I don't need to pay it at all - WRONG! I have finally gotten through to the IRS by phone now on June 4 and have confirmed Barbara Glanz did my taxes incorrectly. Why did I pay $225 to have my taxes done by a professional, if she does not know the correct tax laws? If it weren't for my own research after the letter arrived, I'd be doing something illegal thanks to Barbara Glanz. She refuses to refund the money we paid her and refuses to research the laws she claims to know. This should stand as a huge warning to anyone looking into a new tax accountant. Glanz & Associates is NOT the business for you if you want your taxes handled correctly. I am filing a BBB claim once a new IRS letter confirming the taxes were done wrong is sent to me shortly, so that I have paper evidence for the claim.

Ms. Chen was pleasant but very CONCEDED in her manner of conversation to any question or suggestion that I would ask, she did all of the talking and I did most of the listening. She asked me over 2.5 hours worth of questions many of which were not tax related questions but much more of a personal nature, but was unfortunately not able to answer most of them despite having earned a CPA and Ph.D in Mathematics. Without much notice towards the end of the meeting she said she had to think three days about whether she was going to take on my relatively simple tax preparation and tax amendment needs. I clearly asked her at the time of our meeting, did I do something to make her consider the "three day rule" as she referred to it she said "no, but that she just likes to consider things before she takes on a client" which I thought was a bit strange since we had already talked for 2.5 hours but fair enough a couple of days wouldn't hurt I thought. I felt very uneasy as though I had been scolded for something that I had not even done after leaving the meeting. Although I let it go and thought with her credentials and advanced degrees surely things would work out. We left thing off that she would contact me at the end of the three days to let me know whether she would take me on as a client. Three days later had passed and I had not heard anything from her, so I took the step to follow-up with her. IMPORTANT: As I call her up she's pleasant enough but says she only wants to to focus on the simple tax returns that are not time consuming. Thinking I had misunderstood her I engage her in a further conversation, se was very passive aggressive and I was stunned as to why someone would turn down a a walk-in client although I first sought her out from the Illinois Certified Public Accounts Society ICPA directory, and why she would waste over 2.5 hours of my time just to tell me she either wasn't equipped or simply did not want to do the tax returns for an unspecified reason. After receiving a notice from the IRS, I immediately scheduled an appointment to talk over the options for handling the additional taxes and interest due the IRS. I spent less than 5 minutes speaking with Don, who, as I look back, seemed impatient with the whole situation and had me leave the paperwork for him to look over. I checked back over the course of 1 month 3 times and finally opted on an appointment to come into Algonquin Accounting to check on the status. I wasn't invited into Don's office for a face-to-face and basically given all the paperwork back. Since there wasn't a definitive "pay this amount" IRS voucher I wasn't clear what to do, so I asked and was brusquely told "here is your paperwork" wait for the IRS to bill you. This means additional interest accrual. I've used Algonquin Accounting for 8 years and do feel slighted. I left to sort out my anger between my 1099 mistake which I am totally accountable for and the treatment by Don. I felt the treatment was not right and called to relay my displeasure twice. Don will not take my calls, so after 8 years it's time for a new tax consultant/preparer. All conversations with the staff were professional and I had no problems with the admin. I do not recommend Algonquin Accounting.

I took it for a 2nd opinion and found that the H&R consultant failed to recognize, that due to a QDRO I had post divorce, it prevented a penalty that they didn't even ask me about and therefore missed all together.
