Having taken public transportation to the Kröller-Müller Museum in April, I would recommend renting a car if you're traveling in a group from Amsterdam as it's definitely worth it! In the meantime, my adventure on a train, two buses, and getting dropped at the outside gate and then using a free white bike to get to the actual museum was a unique adventure I will certainly never forget! I admittedly headed to the museum purely for the Van Gogh collection, but wound up enjoying a number of rooms of other Impressionists' works (some I'd heard of before and some that were totally new to me.) The museum staff was friendly - if extremely diligent about enforcing their no backpack policy (don't worry they have a cloak room.) If you've been to Amsterdam, already experienced the Van Gogh museum, and consider yourself a fan this is the perfect place to visit your second time around. The collection is lovely, with some pieces that just drip that amazing Van Gogh texture. (Also, an important Odelin Redon painting is tucked around the back in there!) If your trip is set in stone you absolutely MUST book your pass to the museum in advance. Whether you're driving or taking public transport, this will get you access into Hoge Veluwe park without having to stop - either by car, or by getting kicked off the bus at the park gate and having to walk/bike the rest of the way! If you are going to brave the public transportation system a bit of advice: Make sure you tap through the current turnstiles getting to your train so you have an active trip while on the train so the conductors can scan your pass and move on. read more

One of my very favorites in the world! This museum has everything, and the location is tops. For being outside of Amsterdam, I mean. The food is expensive, of course, but the coffee is good and affordable with the typical apple pie serving. The collection, amassed by Mrs. Kröller-Müller (German descent and quite an interesting lady), constantly changes and it updates with various angles of experiencing art for your personal challenges and artistic/art-appreciation growth. Mrs. Kröller-Müller enjoyed the tutelage of one of the premier art experts during the twentieth century, and with her (unlimited) budget she developed quite a taste for the expressionist and impressionist era paintings. She favored Bart van der Lek, whom she even used as a private painter in their home, also located within the park. Outside, a wonderful garden exhibit with statues and art pieces, including a staircase (to the heavens ;o) which you are not allowed to climb (bad accident occurred a long time ago), where your children can lose their sense of play and run around, even within the Jardin ceramic garden (a stark, black & white enormous above ground piece that is world-famous, but I have misplaced the name in my brain at the moment; I promise to update once I think of it), and where you can enjoy the trees and flowers Holland enjoys growing in its great soil and weather conditions. Because it is located inside a national park (not funded by the Dutch government but with memberships, and private & corporate donations), that is huuuuuuge (for Dutch standards) because Mr. Kröller loved to hunt big animals (and he copied the King, of course), it is such a lovely place to visit. If you are in The Netherlands, this is a museum worth visiting. Its outside of Arnhem, and in the middle of a public park. You get there by driving, when you get to the entrance of the park you can either leave your car there and take a bike (they have hundreds for use by public) to the actual museum itself, or you can pay a little extra and drive into the park. Depending on the weather, both are nice options. This museum has both indoor and outdoor areas. It is largely a sculpture garden walk, and a terrific way to spend a day, or a least a few hours. The sculptures are really terrific, they have a little bit of everything, so everyone will be happy there, and who does not like a "walk in the woods" so to speak. Inside they have sculpture, but also some more traditional paintings. The recent show there was "cars" - they asked a number of artists to envision a car, and create it - using real cars. Very cool exhibit. Some of the cars were inside, others outside. From some of the hotels in the area I think there are organized tours of the museum and park. read more

The Kröller Müller museum is quite something. Now art is objective and of course I liked many of the pieces but not all of them but the couple who's private collection this was, did an amazing thing in gifting it to the people, so for that, it has to be top marks. The Van Gogh collection is vast! It actually is funny because you are walking around and looking at the paintings and I found myself saying in my head, oh....another Van Gogh! Like it is common place. Interestingly enough was the introduction to the collection. Ms Müllers art teacher had a fondness for Van Gogh and recommended them to her. It is said that this collection had a lot to do with the painters popularity and publicity. Worth going to see. It is also housed in the national park so stunning surroundings. The park also has free bike hire so you can go to the museum them cycle to the cafe for lunch. read more

This is an incredible museum put together by a family to represent a lot of major changes in artwork. Tons of Van Goghs & his contemporaries as well as more modern painters & sculptors. This is in Hoge Veluwe park. You can pay for entry to the museum at the park entry & bike in with the free bikes or pay to drive in. Would love to go back here again. read more

I look at Museums differently than many. I'm rarely awestruck by any art being an artist. Not that I'm a great one, but I know what goods art. I really enjoyed this museum. It has the only Van Gogh that's outstanding and important. It has a huge variety of wonderful sculptures. Some of the most impressive I've ever seen. Also a few that I questioned as to their worthiness to be at any museum. But those were few and didn't spoil my experience. If you only go to 3 museums in the Netherlands, this needs to be one of them. When your done take a bike ride through the surrounding park, It's just as special. read more

If you don't love the Kröller-Müller, there's something wrong with you. Dutchwomen are really tall. The only Dutchwoman I know this not to be true of is my niece, but she's only four, so she probably will be very tall. Dutchwomen will explore the Kröller-Müller's awesome sculpture garden with you. OK, maybe not all Dutchwomen, but the ones with old-fashioned German names will. I have proof, I have proof! Famous paintings you've previously only scene in art-history books. They're much smaller than you think, as a rule, and that's strange because paintings are usually much larger than you think, as a rule. But they're all lined up for your perusing pleasure. It's smack dab in the middle of a national park! You can ride one of those white bicycles to it for free. For free! Still not convinced? Wow, you're a straight-up cretin, but I have two words for you: WILD BOARS. Yes, wild boars. Come to the Kröller-Müller, and you might spy some wild boars. Excellent collection that is worth a day trip if you are really into art. Crowds were much less than the Van Gough Museum when I went. Recommendation: Do some research on logistics before you go if you don't have a car. My significant other and I decided to walk (a long way through a nice forested/rural pedestrian/bike route) from the Ede train station, then grabbed the free white bikes at the Otterlo gate to get to the museum. We rented a car in Amsterdam to go here. It is an hour drive from the City Centre.Most tours that you get to here you barely have time to see the museum, let alone the grounds, sculpture garden, restaurant and gift shop and they are expensive! We drove and got there early. The indoor museum is incredible. The wall timeline showing the price and years they bought the VanGogh's alone is fascinating. The VanGogh collection is breathtaking. The other art stellar too. The sculpture gardens wonderful. They sponsor modern/current artists too. You can ride bikes around the grounds for free rental. We brought a picnic lunch and had a sunny day to enjoy the woods. Th restaurant is highly rated with a French chef. The gift shop wonderful. read more

If you have any interest at all in modern art this is really a must-see, just look at the web site and you'll see why, no need to repeat that. Excellent collections with descriptions in Dutch and English, with a crazily extensive grounds with many unusual sculptures and installations you can wander for hours. But plan on going by car, it's the best way, and don't get sticker shock at the euros you'll spend to get in the park and the museum, it's worth it. Get there early and get out before 4pm so that you can grab one of the free (yes free) bicycles and tour the park before sundown. read more

My boyfriend & I recently went on an "Art Tour" of sorts though Europe. We saw a lot of really magnificent museums and galleries, but this was by far one of my most favourite experiences of the entire trip! Set in the marvelous seclusion of a national park the Kröller-Müller has the most wonderful, complex variety of art I've found on the continent. I didn't imagine I would pay much attention to anything once I visited those beautiful Van Gogh paintings, but little did I know what the Kröller-Müller had in store for me. I now have three new favourite artists that I hadn't known existed before and lots of close up photographs of Van Gogh's work. Also the museum staff is very friendly and helpful (except for one woman in the gift shop, but I won't hold that to the museum). There is also a wonderful sculpture garden in addition to the main facility. If you want to really SEE Van Gogh or simply add a little something special to your journey, add this museum to your itinerary. You will get far more than you bargained for! read more

This is one of the best museums in the Netherlands. A hidden treasure. It's a great day out. You can see some nature first. You can choose to bike to the museum. Yu'll be biking through the national park Veluwe where you can see forests and sand drifts and if you're lucky some deer and other wildlife. If you're not up for this, you can drive your car up to the museum. The museum itself is light and it has tons of Van Goghs (second largest collection, after the Van Gogh museum - which I personally find a lot more boring). Other less famous highlights in the Netherlands: Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, towns (Giethoorn and Staphorst in the east/north, Dordrecht and Delft in the west, Breda in south), and the Efteling, one of the best themeparks of the world (I like it better than Disney). In Belgium, visit Antwerps and Brussels, as well as Brugge and Gent. read more

One of my favorite things to do in the Netherlands. The Museum is in a Hoge Veluwe National Park. You can drive to the park, but you can only ride bikes throughout the park. and they do provide free bikes as part of the cost of admission. The grounds are beautiful. The bike paths are well maintained. There is also a hunting lodge that is spectacular. The museum houses the largest private collection of Van Gogh's and the second largest collection of Van Gogh's. They also have a very cool sculpture garden. It's best to visit on a sunny day, which is not always easy to get in The Netherlands, but if the day is nice, this place is absolutely worth seeing. read more
