Staff is unprofessional and rude. Overheard teenage employees picking-on and making-fun of shoppers.

When I came to visit this place for the first time I had no idea that it had a close relationship to the River and Rail Restaurant which I reviewed last year, giving it the highest rank of my Five Star reviews ever. When doing my research for this review I found out that the long-time Roanoke residents, Whit and Lauren Ellerman, the owners of Crystal Spring Grocery, are also the owners of the River and Rail Restaurant, located on the same block as Crystal Spring Grocery. The Ellermans clearly have an eye for recognizing the possibilities of vacant buildings and the talents of others and a vision of how they can come up with something as wonderful as this establishment. Gourmet grocery store and Cafe is a short definition of what Crystal Spring Grocery Company is all about. But I must go more in depth of what makes it so special and unique beside being gourmet. First of all I was very impressed with the interior design of the building space. Simple yet beautiful in its simplicity. I particularly loved its shiny whitish gray floors, and the green furniture and design, throughout the Grocery as well as Cafe. Also, I was very impressed with the windows and lighting treatment of the place. Second, I was very impressed with the quality and organization of the food items and wines, in the Grocery area. Third, with the menu items and quality of the food coming out of the kitchen of the Cafe. I had an Iced Sweet Tea to drink, and a Chicken Sandwich with Fries to eat. Everything was amazingly delicious. And last, but not least, I was highly impressed with the quality of your employees; with the ones behind the counter up front and the ones taking the orders and handing them out in the Cafe area. They all were so friendly and welcoming and at the same time so knowledgeable and organized, providing exceptional customer service individual and working as Team players. I highly recommend this Grocery and Cafe to everyone reading my review and viewing my photographs accompanying this review. This place is another gem in the this neighborhood.

Located in Center In The Square, in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, it's a Market featuring natural grocery staples and organic-focused produce, along with prepared foods and grab-and-go options. It also accepts SNAP/EBT for its prepared foods. Besides this Roanoke Downtown location, it has another much larger community-owned grocery store in Grandin Village. This co-op has over 6,200 owners. They welcome everyone in the community as well as visiting tourists to shop there. And if you wish you too can become an owner by filling out an application and by making a one-time purchase of 8 ownership shares at $200 or paying for your shares one at a time in 8 installments of $25 each within an 8 year period. Owners receive benefits such as Owner Rewards, Patronage Rebates, Vote in their annual Board of Directors elections, eligibility to run for an open seat on the Board of Directors, and an invitation to the Annual Co-op Meeting. Today, I visited their Downtown Roanoke location. The employee on duty allowed me to explore the grocery store and take photographs to accompany my review. The store was very clean and organized, and although it was a bit late, early in the morning its suppliers bring in fresh merchandise, and make sure to fill up all its shelves spaces. In the past, I had purchased many items from this store. In the Summer, I would sometimes get a grab-and-go salad and either go sit at one of the tables that they put out in the Center In The Square or to the ones in the Market Building, and eat it with the salad dressing that it includes inside. Their hot Soup of the day is also very tasty and popular, and I've enjoyed a bowl many times. A while ago they experimented by selling Roanoke t-shirts and due to popular demand they now carry a nice variety of them for both locals and tourists who like taking one home with them as a souvenirof the Star City of Roanoke. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality merchandise they sell here. I definitely highly recommend this grocery store to all who want to eat healthy and support locally sourced products.

My time here at the Roanoke Co+Op was brief, as I spent about 1/2 hour or so looking around and purchased a couple of snack items. The store is one of the largest health and natural food resources in southwest Virginia. It reminds me of my own local natural health food stores in Honolulu but not Whole Foods. It's a quintessential supermarket store that houses a lot of natural food resources that you typically won't find in your larger local grocery stores. They're typically a place where health is impactful and natural foods are the way to build your own lifestyle here in Southwest Virginia. The store itself is not that large but they have a lot of great items to choose from. During the time I was here around 3pm, it wasn't terribly crowded so it was nice to be looking around and seeing what Roanoke Co+Op has to offer. I ended up grabbing healthy snacks and paid cash for them. Healthy chips and healthy drinks other than commercial soda drinks are helpful when you want to maintain weight while maximizing your food options here and supporting local businesses. It was a cozy experience though. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable about a lot of things, specifically how to live a balanced healthy life. We all sure could be more concerned and cognizant about what we eat and how food affects our bodies. Natural foods help bridge that gap with that and the Roanoke Co+Op helps and reminds us of all the natural healthy foods we can incorporate into our diets on a daily lives. It's always nice to find good sources here or wherever your travels takes you. I'm glad my travels took me here and helped me with my snacks and dinner options on a balmy Thursday in March 2026. I enjoyed my time here at the Roanoke Co+Op and hopefully you will too on your next trip here to shop at the Roanoke Co+Op. The overall experience here at the Roanoke Co+Op natural foods store was very good and pleasant. It gave me a chance to wind down during my travels and help myself with meal planning during my stay in Roanoke, even if it's for a night. There was not much of an air conditioning system that kept me and others cool and comfortable. I enjoyed looking at all the different products on the shelves and price compared a lot of things while I was roaming through the aisles that Thursday March afternoon. The prices can be a little more than average, which is typical of natural wellness stores versus the chain supermarkets. You come here because you want to be here and are focused and laser driven on a healthy purposeful life. That is what gets me going every single day I live. The prices doesn't mean much if you don't have health. The store itself is very organized and definitely is amazing. It has everyday items for anyone and everyone who needs healthy food and snacks while having other non edible items for active lifestyles. Regardless of how your lifestyle looks like, the Roanoke Co+Op has what you are looking for. I could have purchased more stuff here but I couldn't use everything during my stay in Roanoke and had to pack it in my luggage, Which was already packed to the max. Even then, my experience here at the Co+Op was very good and happy that I was here. Recommended if you're in the Roanoke area and want to be on top of your health and lifestyle. The Roanoke Co+Op health and natural wellness store is located in Roanoke, Virginia in the Grandin neighborhood. It's physically situated at 1319 Grandin Road SW. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. As far as parking goes, they have a small but limited parking spaces for yall who drive. For myself who take public transportation as much as I do, bus routes 65 and 71 passes the Grandin neighborhood and stops nearby. So you can walk from there and to the Co+Op, which isn't far from the bus stops. There's always Uber and Lyft for anyone and everyone who needs that. I ended up walking to the Grandin neighborhood from the 3rd Street Bus station exchange that afternoon because I had time to kill and tried to save a little bit of money. It was money well saved and spent it while shopping at the Co+Op instead. They have a hot bar, where you can buy your lunch and dinner by the lbs. One of these years when my travels permit me to return to Roanoke, I will be able to come back and have lunch or dinner here at the Co+Op. Recommended if you're in the area and want to eat and be healthy. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

I stayed in the full check out line because I can't do self check out. No problem. The cashier decided to leave everyone standing in the line to go to the vacant self check out area to reset a machine. I can understand if there's a line but it was empty and there were plenty of other registers they could go to. I had a very large bag. Rather than put anything in the bag, she put everything all over the cart and then was rushing me to pay. If I have to pack everything into the bag myself then thats going to have to wait. I then leaned on the cart as I was passing to get my bag after paying and she snaps at me saying I have to leave it. I know that. Why would I want the cart if I have my bag in my hand? Every other cashier has put my items in my bag. This one placed some items in the top of the cart and some on the bottom and some on the side. They are small items so someone with disabilities will take time to pack them and they have no right to scold or rush you especially after you made them wait to reset a machine that no one was using. Very bad service. In addition to the bad service they've also been out of the baby chickens that are a regular item for the past 4 visits. The chuck roast has been out the past 3 of 4 times.

I was appalled at the store in Roanoke VA today. There was trash outside by the carts, trash on the floors inside, including a broke bottle of what appeared to be a small bottle of iced coffee on the floor by the pet food. There were empty boxes on the disheveled shelves. For weeks now , there has been a lack of many, many items normally carried as inventory, to the point I was beginning to think they were getting ready to close the store. I could not be more disappointed with the handling of this store.

And other for a number of individual interests that no one could imagine. For example I joined mostly because their Deli stocks Chorizo Cantimpalos, a Spanish dried-cured chorizo sausage, typically made from pork and beef, that's popular as a ready-to-eat tapas or cooked in stews. It's produced in the province of Segovia, Spain, and it's known for its coarse texture and distinctive flavor. Curently one of their most popular service is their Optical Service. Not only are you able to order prescription eyeglasses at very reasonable prices, but now they have a Doctor of Optometry on the premises to provide Comprehensive Eye Exams there, using State-of-the-art technology. One can schedule an appointment or just walk in. This service is very convenient as well as saving members time and money. I definitely recommend getting a membership here, especially since now in order to motivate you to do so they are sending email or email yearly membership offers to join for only $20 so future customers can experience the advantages of membership at a discount price before committing themselves to pay full price without knowing if it really will benefit them.
