Red gingham curtains, cow paintings etc. You have to take a snow machine to get up to this place & if you miss the occasional times that it goes back down to the town you have to toboggan - awesome! The breakfast & evening meal were included in our nightly rate & the price was ridiculously good! The ribs were outstanding. There's an outdoor hot tub which thr owners will gladly fire up for you in the snow. Staying here felt like a fairy tale. I can't wait to go back!

They were so excited to take me to Spielberghaus because the journey to and from the restaurant is so much a part of their favorite family traditions. First of all, no cars are allowed to drive up the snowy path that leads to the cabin. You have the option of taking a large snowmobile or a "pistenraupe" all the way to the cabin for a few euro. We decided to walk up the path because it was such a beautiful night. The 45 minute walk was definitely a challenge as it is all uphill, but you cannot beat the views and scenery of this special place, it's truly magical. At the top of the hill, you feel like you're discovering a special hideaway with the warm lights glowing onto the white snowy banks outside. Indoors is perfectly decorated as you would imagine an Austrian hut in the Alps to be, complete with floor to ceiling wood beams, and local music playing in the background. Our meal of goulash, schnitzel, apfenstrudel, and beers was definitely well deserved after our walk. Service was top notch and so hospitible, it felt like we were in someone's home. My favorite part of the experience was the way home. Sleds are available to rent for you to take down the path you just climbed up! Believe me, there is nothing like a sled ride that lasts 15 minutes down the most picturesque snowy setting you can imagine. Truly a memory that I will not forget that I cannot wait to repeat already. Go and enjoy yourself!

The rooms are well equipped and clean, and the staff is always courteous, friendly, and willing to help with any need/desire. They offer a selection of room types - hotel or apartment (with mini kitchen), sleeping varying numbers of guests. The location is ideal - Obertauern, rated the "snowiest" place in Austria, cannot be beat. Even the NY Times noticed (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/29/travel/skiing-the-alps-austria-winter.html)! Owned by the Grillitsch family, the team goes out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Goran would drive our group to the lift, a mere 3 minutes away and pick everyone up. Afternoon snacks of either a dessert or stew were always a welcome treat. I am marking this as moderate, since compared to the resorts in the US, Sonne and the ski experience (lift, lessons, restaurants) are a deal ... you get so much more than you'd ever get in the US. Go there - you'll love it. The US ski resorts could learn a thing or two (or more!) from this resort town.
