Greengrocers, fishmongers, florists and enormous delis are just some of the things you'll find inside. I recommend getting in early (around 9am) and just taking a walk. You'll pick up some bargains, but I'll give you a run down of my favourite places. The chicken store stocks some great deals including enormous fresh chicken lasagna for around $17 - big enough to feed 4, you can freeze them or pop them in the oven for half an hour and get a delicious and hearty meal. The juice bar is a great place to refresh. The have low-fat creamy yoghurt, fresh juices and really excellent smoothies made with yoghurt and milk, or sorbet. Nick and Sue's gourmet deli is a must if you love dips, bread or any sort of meat. Prosciutto sliced freshly, soft pasta and a wide range of cheeses are also sold here. Nick and Sue's is your one stop shop inside the market. I'm constantly surprised by the quality and price of the ingredients (in a good way), and even though you may have to jostle around a counter to get served, it adds to the rustic atmosphere of the market.

Leo's reminds me of the best supermarkets in Adelaide, Foodland, stocking a similar range. The variety of organic, gluten free, and super foods is enough to inspire you to swear off the bad stuff, well for a few minutes anyway! Prices are slightly higher but when you're buying and supporting local I think it's worth it. Plus when you realise your exercising your right to buy outside of the big two, it's definitely worth it. You can easily do a big or little shop here. Highly recommend.

Colonial Fruit Co is a bit of a godsend for decent fruit and veg…read more Im not the type to frequent farmers markets, and usually rely on getting all my stuff from the supermarket. Quite often though, the quality and range of the supermarket fruit and veg is.... well... lacklustre. Colonial is right next door to my regular supermarket, so anything I cant find in my regular shop, I pop by here afterwards and fill in the gaps. The produce is fantastic, extremely fresh. They also have some deli items, like cheese, olives and smallgoods. Pricing in incredibly reasonable, some items even cheaper than at the huge chain store.

It's like going to a family run store knowing you'll get top notch service every time. The couple are really good with recommendations too so if you're torn between brands, they can advise you which might be better for the dish you're preparing. Like all Asian grocery stores, you can find everything to do with Asian cooking here and some more rare ingredients like Laksa leaf (needed for curry laksa) and durian (frozen). They also sell a range of nyonya kueh (Asian desserts) and on some days you can get yu tiao (fried dough sticks) for porridge.

That said, Renaissance isn't your typical supermarket so, for it, I make an exception. This is a small and compact mecca of foodie delights. Sure you can get all your typical household items (toilet paper, washing up liquid and shampoo) but think of anything else - bread, milk, cheese, chocolate... and not only will you find the common brand names but an interesting assortment of gourmet, imported and/or organic options. You can buy dairy products from Schultz, bread from the likes of Zealey Bay, dips from Pilpel, icecream from Gundowing and don't even get me started on the chocolate selection... I always need to avoid that aisle lest I throw 100 bars of Simon Coll 70% cocoa in my basket. It's a great place to stock up on all your favourite epicurean delights while also grabbing those boring household essentials. The wine and booze selection is adequate if you desperately need something but don't expect to find unusual bottles here. This is the one area that doesn't seem to have been blessed with the same attention to detail.
