We discovered Kösem while staying in Norrebro on a recent trip to Copenhagen…read more Norrebrogade offers an amazing array of kebab, durum, and lahmacun shops. Kösem stood out in offering the ambience of a full sit-down restaurant, as well as in offering a much wider selection than many of their neighbours. The menu was divided into a few main sections - durums, grilled meats (lamb, chicken, salmon, etc.), classic cooked foods (güveç, sac kavurma, etc.), and a value deal of two selections from the specialties of the day (lamb shanks, karnıyarık, kofte, etc.). Each of the larger meals included a serving from the meze bar, choice of rice or bulgar pilav, and house-made bread. (Small quibble: they forgot to bring our bread on 2 out of 2 visits, though there was more than enough food without it, and they promptly brought some when the oversight was pointed out.) Frankly, we both agreed that the grilled lamb was the best we have had in ages. Maybe we were there on an especially good night, but I don't care. It was delicious. Our opinions were more divided on the cooked specialties of the day. My husband thought they were absolutely delicious, while I thought they were just respectably tasty. Either way, we enjoyed the meal enough to return a couple days later for a repeat. This time the grilled lamb, grilled salmon, and cooked specialties were all declared a great success. In addition to tasty food, we found the owner-operator very friendly and accommodating. He was happy to help a couple of tourists put together the best possible meals from his daily offerings, regardless of whether our interests matched up with the actual menu items. Just look at the delicious food on offer, tell the nice man what you want, and he will find a way to make it work.

Meat was small, a bit over cooked, and unimpressive. Fish was ok, but largely saved by the lemon sauce and didn't feel terribly fresh. Otto also fails to pass the "will I need to eat a kebab after dinner?" test as well.

The staff were really nice. I asked for an English menu but they didn't have any but informed me that there is a staff member who is very fluent in English. Luckily my friend knew Danish, so it was no problem. There was quite a variety (doner, platters, sweets, turkish pizza) and prices were pretty standard. I had the lamb kebab while my friend had the chicken shawarma (I think). There was a bit too much fat in the lamb for my liking. It was well seasoned but a little tough to chew. The bulgar was flavorful but dry... I'm a bit disappointed with the food, but somewhat enjoyable. Maybe other options taste better? The restaurant is quite spacious and it looks like there's areas for large groups. They even have outdoor seating for days with nice weather.

Lovely grime-y Euro-comfort food with blues on repeat…read more The decor and atmosphere is certainly blues inspired but run by hipsters. It's grime-y in a charming way but stay away if any grime bothers you. It's dingy on the inside with some nice sidewalk seats, but reeks of old cigarettes either way. Lots of folksjust hanging out for some drinks and people watching. For this they had high chairs and baby friendly. The service is great. They give of the air of not GAF but are actually attentive and charming. Food came or relatively quickly on a Friday night which was good with a hungry child. They were happy to explain things on the menu and even suggested a few things for substitution. Funnily everyone comes into the restaurant, loclas and tourirsts alike, acting confused where to sit or if there's a queue and after a dramatic pause the barkeep tells them to sit wherever and right on. The food was good. The menu looks very basic and doesn't do the food justice. The 3 salads accompanying each meal are listed without description or fanfare. You don't know which ones you'll get. We got four different ones in combination for two entrees. Even the chicken satay we ordered for our little one came with two salad sides. Two out of four were great, the others bland. Each salad is about 1/4 of a cup, fairly small. The sesame seaweed with ginger and heirloom tomato salads rocked. The guacamole (really just smash avocados without seasoning) and cabbage salad (no dressing, plain with two honeyed almonds on top) were uninspiring. We got the Manilla tofu and beef lasagna as the main dishes. The Manilla tofu was cooked just right with great sauce and an ample portion of protein compared to your average Nordic experience. The beef lasagna was decadent. It was more reminiscent of mousaka than lasagna, cheesy, pillowy, creamy, and very thin Al dented pasta. Not a whole lot of meat but very flavorful and filling. The drink list was pretty good. I had a nice primotivo for only 55 Kr. Whole bottles are reasonable finds at good prices. They also serve half bottles I'm carafes. Good brew selection too. Prices were fair for the fare. Much less expensive than many surrounding restaurants. Overall, great spot. Good to hang or eat. Not pretentious but just good enoufh food.
