If this haole on the mainland may humbly speak up…read more... Unbeknownst to it's employees, KPOA had my back for some 10-15 years now. In my line of work, a little KPOA every day keeps the PTSD away! The emails I've sent back and forth to the Morning Goddess, Sista Val and Island Boy have all been answered, NEVER ignored. (Try getting that from a mainland radio station!) And not only answered, but actually made CONVERSATION! Sometimes the 911 traffic I handle is too much and I have to shut off the stream, but I always come back. Just 30 seconds of KPOA kills off the stress and softens my heartbeat from the last call. I don't understand one syllable of the Island languages, but, oh! those TIGHT harmonies in the music carry such magical healing powers. What stuck me to the station was the theft of heavy construction equipment several years ago, "earth movers", of all things! For several hours the Morning Goddess SHAMED those responsible; I swear I was listening to my mother's voice. So scary! But I would NEVER find that on mainland radio, no matter how far into the countryside I ventured. KPOA has reminded me of the wrongs done to the very core of the Hawaiian people by the removal of their language, and the loss of their land rights. They have helped open my eyes to attitudes and mannerisms that should never be a part of me. Even though the program content is clearly intended for the Maui Ohana, and not this outsider, KPOA welcomes me. They make me feel like family. If that's not ALOHA, what is?
