It was a unique experience sharing a meal with kind strangers in a studio. Our chef kept bringing out one delightful dish after another. My favorite foods happen to be the cashew based macaroni and cheese and the pecan pie with pecan ice cream. I highly recommend attending one of Philip's events!!!

He uses only the freshest ingredients and creates incredibly delicious all vegan dishes. I am not a vegan but if all vegan food were this good I would be a convert. He uses locally shopped ingredients including some of the finest local tofu and tempeh makers. He is about to publish his second cookbook and no doubt it will reflect the same rich cultural varieties he has presented in the first one and in the meals he has prepared. Vegan interpretations of MIddle Eastern, Thai, Chinese, Southern U.S., or whatever you wish all are lovingly prepared and served with both pride and joy. The music (not every meal) is an eclectic assortment of some of the finest musicians in the Bay Area and beyond. Phil, in addition to being a fine chef, is a musician, a shakuhachi player (that's a Japanese bamboo flute) and teacher. His deep connections to the music community allow him to invite some amazing colleagues who play in intimate house concerts. There is a sort of core "regular" crowd that I enjoy seeing but there are frequently newcomers and out of towners who go on the adventure to this non-descript West Oakland loft. The crowd (no more than 20) has always been a great part of the experience. I guess I drank the Kool Aid, ate the tofu, or whatever but I am forever sold on the Sound and Savor experience. This is definitely one of the great joys of Oakland and the East Bay.

This…read morewas actually my first time working with a catering company, and they were very organized and responsive. They had a lot of food options, including vegetarian options and kids' menus, and they were able to do either a buffet or plated food. What we ended up with - PASSED APPETIZERS: - Sweet potato and kale latke with creme fraiche and smoked trout: my favorite of the appetizers - Seared scallops: small scallops with shaved daikon and micro greens. Scallops are hard to scale, especially at this size - Potato chickpea cauliflower croquette: great warm FAMILY STYLE DINNER: - Baby lettuces with compressed pink lady apples: not over dressed - Braised short ribs: a bit dry but quality meat - Wild mushroom risotto: a hearty vegetarian option - Brassicas: cauliflower, broccolini, squash, cannellini beans: a surprising favorite for people - Roasted baby carrots DESSERT: Plated - spiced carrot cake - not too sweet, nice and dense. They were great about lighting candles for the birthday guests for the event The per person cost for food isn't bad at all, especially as we ended up with a lot of leftovers! That said, the other costs do add up (staff, setup, etc). The staff were courteous and non intrusive, and they helped with refilling waters, clearing dishes, etc. They communicated well and were very professional. They were great to work with as caterers for a private event.

We got married on the de Young Museum terrace (which…read morewas beautiful but extraordinarily complicated given the nature of the venue--members of their staff were so kind and flexible but many others were borderline hostile; I can't recommend it). Grace Street was the core of our wedding as they handled catering, rentals, and setup for both the reception and ceremony. Cynthia helped us understand the rental and catering proposal and process upfront. We had no idea what we were doing as we didn't have a planner until early much later in the process. She was never bothered by our questions. Will made himself fully available as we finalized our rental order. He was not only responsive but full of ideas about how to execute the event well. He acted like a partner in our planning, which we desperately needed given his experience at our unique venue. The team set the space up in record time without sacrificing quality. The food was INCREDIBLE--even better than we remembered from the tasting. We have received rave reviews about both appetizers and entrees from our family and friends (tough critics). I would so happily work with them again.

People don't usually leave weddings raving about the food, but our wedding was different. The food wasn't just good; it was a massive highlight of the entire weekend, and our guests are still talking about it. We had a very specific vision: a nod to New Mexican cuisine that felt personal and elevated. We even brought red and green chile back from New Mexico, and Chef William and Chef Mikey honored those flavors so beautifully and seamlessly. Every dish felt thoughtful, balanced, and deeply rooted in the flavors we love, while still being refined enough for a wedding setting. Beyond the food itself, they were a dream to work with -- incredibly responsive, collaborative, and genuinely invested in getting every detail right. Throughout the entire planning process, we felt supported and understood. And this wasn't a fluke. They also catered our best friends' wedding and two private dinners we've attended and hosted. Every single experience has been flawless. If you want food that your guests will never stop talking about, Comestible is it.

One positive outcome of COVID-19 was having caterers be more accessible for people who just want individual or family meals opposed to food for events. Comestible provided my family an extremely affordable and delicious well-rounded meal. They have weekly offerings for a family of 4 during the pandemic, though towards the end of 2020 they started having more extravagant sets that cost more, and holiday meals which also utilized pricier ingredients with more dishes. Their Instagram @comestible.catering is the most up to date with their activities, so check that for their latest offering. Communication via text is very fast and easy, and Chef Mikey was so accommodating and friendly! As my boyfriend put it, he was "the happiest man alive" when we picked up our meal set. We had the summer fried chicken dinner menu between Aug 3-9, which included: - Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Dill Pickle Slaw & Smokey BBQ Sauce Good ol' fried chicken, very crunchy and juicy. I actually didn't know this was parcooked; I dug in too fast and read the included envelope after I finished eating... my fault! We were supposed to finish cooking in the oven for a little longer, so it was slightly pink inside some pieces. Nothing bad happened, in fact I like rare meat, so maybe even better... The slaw was standard chopped red cabbage lightly tossed in a mayo-based dressing, and minimal bits of other veggies. The BBQ sauce was quite tangy with a sweet smoky finish, though the chicken didn't need it. - Comestible Caprese Salad I do wish the arugula leaves were tossed and moistened, as they were crackly and completely dry. The tomatoes and mozzarella came in minimal amount. The mozzarella balls were quite small! Also could have used more basil. - Whole Roasted Summer Squash I normally hate squash, but loved this. They were large roasted slices of zucchini (two whole zucchinis, sliced in half) with a ratatouille salsa. I've never eaten such large zucchinis before! It tasted farm fresh as well. The ratatouille salsa was a delicious tomato sauce with chunks of various stewed veggies. - Sun-dried Tomato & Corn Muffins Savory muffins! Crusty, bready muffins with sweet raisin-like sundried tomatoes within, and a generous dollop of Aleppo honey butter, which was so creamy and subtly sweet. - Summer Berry Clafoutis, Meyer Lemon Whipped Cream Haven't heard of these before - it's like a soft tart that contained a lot of sliced almonds. Interesting texture! Enjoyed the fresh varied berries baked into the clafoutis. The whipped cream had a sweet hint of lemon. It's an amazing value for a family, and everything tasted very wholesome and fresh; even though we had fried chicken for dinner, I still felt healthy from all the quality ingredients and veggies! A majority of their meals feature chicken as the main dish and only protein, which can get tiring, but I understand it's probably used to keep costs low. They also always offer a vegetarian alternative. Comestible also sells other sides in addition to the weekly menu. I tried the Comestible famous salted chocolate chip cookie for $1 ea, which had a soft and thin freshly baked texture with yummy chocolate bits, a little on the sweet side. They offer pickup in Oakland as well as delivery for a fee. Payment is accepted via Venmo. If I lived in the area, I'd happily order Comestible for an easy, happy, filling, coursed meal for my family.
