Since moving from Nelson to Auckland years back I lost touch with the 'hot' eateries in my…read morehometown, which is why I was very dependent on Yelp reviews in determining where I'd eat whilst visiting. Cafe Affair was the highest rated of any joint in the Nelson area - racking up two 5 star reviews for a (then) perfect score. For this reason I dragged myself and family through the revolving doors for breakfast with high hopes. The menu was very simple - which I assumed was because Nelson isn't as busy as bigger cities and its therefore smarter business practice to provide a few good quality items rather than plenty of rubbish ones. However, I was wrong and as a result, sorely disappointed. I ordered the big breakfast which included sausages, potato hash, bacon, herbed toast and vine tomatoes. Not one element of this meal was enjoyable, let alone worth the $18 I paid for it. Everything was just store bought, plain old supermarket food - but not even good quality supermarket food. I feel bad saying this, because the staff were very lovely, but I could have made a better breakfast with my eyes closed. My mother was similarly unimpressed with her eggs benedict, which I felt responsible for since I had dragged us to Cafe Affair. If it weren't for my uncle (who is short on cash, lives off baked beans and NEVER has the pleasure of eating out) who was very impressed with his French toast, I would have complained and sent the meals back. However, I didn't want to ruin his experience so my mother and I bit our tongues and paid. While I do think the staff are pleasant, they can't make up for the dreadful food. I recommend people spend their money elsewhere and avoid Cafe Affair entirely.

Coffees were great and arrived quickly. The food was fantastic and good value. If anything, portions were larger than we expected! Recommended for brunch, lunch or coffee!

My hubby had the burger - it was massive and he loved it. Daughter had the chicken and waffles which were a little spicy for her taste. I had the brisket and eggs. They had a nice looking outdoor area also.

In my final few months in New Zealand I lived in a super small town, less than like 7k people small. It only had 1 main street and this was one of the few highlights of it. This restaurant is popular for the bbq, the inside of it gives off a USA vibe too. It had a big old looking front of a farm truck that they used as their cafe order window, barrels everywhere(hence the name) felt like I was somewhere in the middle of America eating here. As far as the food goes, it's a versatile place. The BBQ is their specialty but they also have some fun breakfast items and, a fantastic gourmet donut selection. I've had the pork ribs and lamb ribs, I loved both equally as much. Can't go wrong with either choice. If you're there for lunch give the brisket burger a try! And for breakfast try out the donuts or get the smoked slamon eggs benny on a bagel with a Chai Latte! Chai in New Zealand just hots different. They also have a carnivore brunch platter which is something I would expect in the deepest parts of Texas haha. So if that's your thing go for it. Sausage and bacon are really the only meats I can do for breakfast. The nice thing about their breakfast menu is it's all day! The prices are pretty high here, but it's one of the only "nicer" restaurants within about 20km, so I guess it's understandable that you pay for some quality food and a nice night out dinner. I enjoyed this place a lot. All the memories with friends, the friendly staff, great food at any time of the day. It kinda reminded me of home and that was comfy. It's a 5 star from me!

Brand new to Motueka, Precinct Dining Co is an upmarket but unpretentious cafe restaurant offering…read moreall day dining from multiple menus. Precinct's mission is "bringing high quality dining to Motueka using fresh local produce, the region's great wines and artisan products". On our first visit I can pretty much say the've nailed nailed that right out of the box. We were in 'Mot', as the locals call it for a family Christmas and my partner Ryan's family had heard good things about the place but not been yet. On our last full day Ryan and I tried Precinct for brunch with our friend Hamish. We'll most certainly be back next time we are in town to try the lunch or evening fare. The breakfast menu offered the usual array of morning provisions; bacon and eggs, mushrooms on toast, salmon and an 'American Stack' of pancakes but probably because we were hungover all three of us immediately opted for 'The Real Deal' aka a big breakfast. The meals were fast and the service overall prompt. The food was very good and very nicely presented. Being Paleo I ditched the toast which was extraneous anyway really as the potato hash cake was more than adequate. According to Ryan the coffee was great and my peppermint tea was excellent and impressively presented with teapot, cup and saucer with an information card about the tea. The lunch and dinner menus feature items such as burgers and sliders, pulled pork, terrine, steaks, seafood and salads. All sound great and as promised, sourced as locally as possible. There's even a separate brunch menu which comes on mid morning and into the afternoon incase lunch goers fancy something more breakfast like. Now that's service. There's also a bites menu. So when in Mot... Do as the locals will soon be doing. Go to Precinct!

They offered some nice vegetarian pizza options with appealing local ingredients, and I managed to be in Nelson on the day of the week (Wednesday) when they were offering a two for one special, so I tried both the ones I wanted. They were good enough that I felt bad about how I struggled to reheat the leftovers in my limited accomodation the next day. Especially one that offered sundried tomato and feta; tomato and cheese on top of tomato and cheese seems redundant, but it's quite good. I also reveled in my cheap pizza by trying a fancy sparkling grape juice thing, which was quite tasty and a good vacation-y sort of way to top off the evening for the non-drinker. They had very nice service, and despite it being a vacation town, it seemed like a lot of the customers were regulars and there was a decided neighborhood vibe going on. None of which was bad; I'd certainly recommend it as a stop for anyone visiting the area.
