As we drove, and I was a bit hesitant, since we only had a regular compact car, and all I saw were giant 4 x 4 trucks. Lol some of the potholes word rather day, but we could maneuver around them. Beautiful beach with a lot of parking areas and personal little shop grounds. A lot of people were able to set up their own tents and canopies to shield themselves from the sun. As we walked out how long the titles there were people fishing along the shore. I liked being able to watch all the fish and cute spider crabs on the rocks. We drove around to the beach side and it looked like you could camp overnight there or at least do long day parties?! Someone was throwing a baby shower, so there were a lot of festivities going on. we also saw some surfers out surfing with nets so maybe they were fishing also? We were visiting Kona from the mainland and wanted a nice local beach without a big drive. I saw this beach was only a couple of miles away so we decided to go. It was a great experience. Cool spot that used to be an airport that is now a great local beach with something for everyone. You basically drive down the old runway until you get to the spot you want. Grab your stuff and a very short walk to a long beach where you pick out a spot and chill. It's a large beach so it felt very spacious and comfortable. Port a potties and pavilions available. We returned several times during our stay. Would recommend! Not a super sandy beach but had sandish tide pools to go in water without lots of waves. Could go out to waves but we didn't choose to. If you're super fussy and want pristine white sand, may not be your jam. read more

Came here on a Saturday just before noon in the middle of July. There are large strips of places to set up on either side of the entrance - once you get to the water you can either go left or right on one way roads that have some places to allow oncoming cars to pass. Not a problem at all and everyone was courteous. Lots of cars but finding parking wasn't an issue - a lot of them appear to be surfers. Certain parts of the beach were busier than others, but if you're patient and look around it wasn't hard for us to find a quiet and secluded spot. There were definitely some larger groups and families with big tents and cooking out, but was easy to find a quiet spot that we didn't feel like it was overly crowded. Pretty sure there is an area with showers and bathrooms that we drove by at one point, but they were a pretty far drive from where we were. Otherwise there's a good amount of outhouses scattered along the road just a short walk from the beach. The sand is more course and rocky rather than fine, soft sand. If you want to go into the water, would definitely recommend some sort of water shoes as there isn't much sand and mostly rock, coral, urchins, etc. The water itself was warm and clear with nice, small waves. Lots of surfers to watch. After being here Saturday, we drove around Sunday to a couple other beaches (i.e. magic sands, Kahaluu Bay) but ended up coming back here because the other places were seriously packed. It was a great choice and we got a little spot again all to ourselves. Would definitely recommend for a chill day of laying around on the beach. read more

No sand in the ocean, only sharp coral! Waves are over crowded and dangerous. Boards flying all over the place! Even know someone that got their teeth knocked out! Not a good place to surf or to go swimming! read more

Kohanaiki aka Pine Trees. What was once a challenge to get to is now easily accessible due to the private development having to create public access. This is a great beach to just cruise and relax. Bbq and bathrooms are available, as is over 100 parking spots. There are no park benches like other beaches, so bring your own chair, or sit on the sand. There are lots of stretches of sand, but an almost all rocky bottom will keep most swimmers out. A very popular and well known surf spot though. A great beach to relax and enjoy company with others, but not for swimming at all. Camping is also allowed here with a permit. I believe it was $10/night + $1/person last i checked. A cool easy and close beach for those in town, and don't want to get in (aside from surfing). If it's accessible water you are looking for, head to Kua Bay or another beach. read more

Great stretch of beach. It has some waves for surfing and they can hit the shore hard so keep the small Keiki in the tide pools. It has tons of secluded little areas for privacy and it's beautiful to walk up to from parking. read more

Loved this place. Has parking or you are able to drive on the sand closer to the water. Has portable CLEAN bathrooms. I was actually surprised that it was not crowded both times I was here. Seems like a spot for locals but I may be wrong and just lucked out getting away from tourist are. Very relaxing ... swim if you want or just watch the waves. read more

What used to require 4-wheel drive across a crumbling lava tube years ago is now an easy cruise for any car and very rewarding as The Bay at the end has nice washrooms, showers, and a safe place for surfers, especially families. Bring your food, beach chairs, and an umbrella, during busy times, as tree shade is limited. The keiki pond at the bay is perfect for kids and adults to just roll around in a protected natural beach pond. Its small but can handle about ten people depending on the tide.The areas leading in to the bay are nice for lounging or watching surfers tackle waves at The RoCk or Elevators. Not sure camping is still allowed but if it is, bring a gas stove for cooking, as open fires are not allowed. This place closes after sunset, opens early again. They have someone patrolling in a golf cart to keep everyone safe. No lifeguards but we all watch out for each other, especially surfers. Getting out to the break can be challenging so higher tides may make it easier - I always looked for at least 6 inches above sea level (after breaking my fin out of the box, once). We all benefited from the hard work done by countless activists who volunteered their time to clean up after junk left years ago before the condos were built (pricey), we won the right to continued access to one of the fav surf spots Konaside, pressed for developer-funded improvements, and have this jewel of a beach as a result. I am so grateful for all the hard work done by everyone to make this so. This is a lovely romantic spot with lots of sand (scarce Konaside). This is the beach you see, when circling in for final approach at the Kona airport. We all know it as Pine Trees. And no, they are not really pines. read more

NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY! Crowded beach with a bunch of people on boards that don't know what they are doing really dangerous. Watched several people get hit and or ran over by people that don't know what they are doing. The golf course is extremely close to the beach and makes you feel like you're surrounded by resorts instead of in paradise not to mention the water is extremely dirty from the run off. Heard there's a shark that frequents this area also. Lots of sea urchins that if stepped on are very painful. I stepped on one and one of those gross locals said the only way to get rid of the poison was to pee on it... disgusting Kuki'o is the best beach on the island go there read more
