"THERE'S A FINE LINE BETWEEN PLEASURE AND PAIN, AND THE LADIES AT CHINA BEAUTY MASSAGE KNOW EXACTLY…read moreWHERE IT LIES."
We walked in broken. We walked out resurrected.
Sometimes, we rely on old favourites. Sometimes, we take a chance on something new. That day in Amsterdam was one of meetings, fatigue, and the kind of bone-chilling Dutch weather that seeps into your soul. Cold, wet, grey, and utterly miserable, we were on the verge of collapse. Worse still, something was brewing in the chest--a creeping exhaustion threatening to take hold.
Then, purely by chance, we found ourselves at the door of China Beauty Massage. "Found" is generous--(barely) crawled would be more accurate. That was the state we were in.
We had one more meeting to get through, but survival took priority. The therapist nodded knowingly at our request, responding with a simple: "Ahh haa, ahh haa. Not a problem, not a problem. Ahh haa, ahh haa."
An elderly woman stood up, gestured twice with her hands--an odd jerking motion. We were too tired to decipher it. Without hesitation, she stepped forward, relieved us of our coats, and hung them up with the efficiency of someone who had done this a thousand times before. We sat. Moments later, warm towels appeared on our laps, cups of loose-leaf Chinese green tea were placed before us, and shoes were gently removed. Then, the magic began.
Every. Single. Thing. On. Our. Feet. Hurt.
The tips of our toes, the ankles, the Achilles, the balls, the sides, the arches--the whole damn map of our suffering was etched into the soles of our feet. And if you know anything about Chinese foot massage, you know that each part of the body corresponds to a pressure point in the foot. The pain was a message: our bodies were out of balance, and we were paying the price.
And then, something extraordinary happened.
People, I swear to you, I now understand what Jesus Christ must have felt like up there on the cross. That was the kind of day we had. But within minutes--minutes--under the skilled hands of those therapists, it was nothing short of a resurrection. Right there, in the middle of Amsterdam.
Now, let's address the naysayers. I've seen some of the vicious, clueless comments left by reviewers. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, sure, but let's be clear: this is a Chinese therapeutic body massage clinic.
Whether you're in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, or Taipei, whether you're in Chinatown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or London, the format is always the same: big, comfy chairs, functional hot water pails, and interior decor that ranges from basic to non-existent. In larger Chinese cities, the chairs sometimes recline into full loungers, but the experience? Almost identical.
If you want frou-frou--the sound of whales cooing to each other, people playing the flute under the dulcet light of the moon, and a dizzying menu of exotic, wallet-draining treatments--the spa at the Conservatorium Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, and the Grand Sofitel Amsterdam await. (And let me say, all are very fine establishments--we frequent them.)
What sets China Beauty Massage apart? Service. If you know traditional Chinese medical Tui Na body massage and foot massage, you know that China Beauty Massage is the real deal. Almost every therapist here is damn good at what they do. Some lack endurance.
Personally, we prefer a firm massage--starts strong, stays strong, ends strong.
Punters should also know that these places operate on a first-come, first-served basis. If you walk in, you get whoever's next. If you have special requests--whether you want an iron grip or the lightest touch--say so at the start. And if communication is an issue? No excuses. You have a smartphone. Use Google Translate.
And let's be absolutely clear: this is not some flimsy, frou-frou, feel-good 'move oil around your feet' mess called Western foot reflexology, with its soft, directionless strokes and feather-light oil treatments. If that's your thing, fine--enjoy. But if you've got an ailment, lingering fatigue, or some mysterious ache that won't go away, do yourself a favour: China Beauty Massage is the place.
We've introduced this clinic to friends from Leipzig, Santa Barbara, Bermuda, the Azores, Duluth, Minnesota--and every single one of them raved about the experience.
