I went into this shop recently to enquire about a beautiful instrument I had seen on display that my boyfriend had been admiring. Turns out it was a Swedish lyre and - at £230 - it's unlikely he will be getting one for Christmas, but my experience in the shop was wonderful nonetheless. A haven in the midst of Leeds city centre, Knock on Wood stocks a variety of weird and wonderful instruments from across the globe, from the ubiquitous djembe drum to more unusual items like udu pot drums (quite quiet apparently, ideal for kids!) and xaphoons, a sort of pocket saxophone. The staff are obviously passionate about world music, and it's hard not to find yourself engaged in conversation with them, even if you're a complete musical Luddite like myself. The shop also operates as a sort of musical community hub, with a notice board offering lessons and education aids for teachers available. Whether you're already into world music, are looking to take up a new instrument or just fancy prodding some cool things for a while, Knock on Wood shines out as an individual in a street full of dull chain stores. read more
