My first visit to Knit On! was a success! They have such a huge selection here, a whole room of your natural fibers (like wool or cotton) and another room of acrylic and baby yarns. I was amazed at the selection given I am a beginner and have only shopped at Michael's Crafts for yarn. It's clear the yarns are high quality but they have some at every price point which is great. This place is so much better than the big box store where I've had a hard time finding a selection of wool yarn and things like safety eyes. Knit On! had everything I'd ever need for a project and a lot for inspiration too. There were some baby lovey kits and kits for scarves and other fun creations. There are cute pins and jewelry too! I liked how it was all well organized. The proprietor Nancy helped me and was very kind. She showed me where everything is and let me browse as I pleased. She also wound my yarn into a cake/ball for me and let me know they offer knitting lessons if I'd ever like to try! Stumbling upon this store was one of those happy accidents that left a dent in my wallet and a big smile on my face. The yarn selection is phenomenal - every color and texture you can possibly imagine. I lost track of time wandering up and down the aisles, petting nearly every skein. I think I managed to buy some of the softest things ever invented. Some of the yarns were so cool and weird that I actually did a little excited dance! I love that the woman running the shop didn't even laugh at me when I ran up to the register, smiling and giddy, and said "WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH THIS!??!" Instead, she gave me a pattern and made sure I knew how to do all of the stitches, since I told her I was a new knitter. The cat, Tanner, is the fattest cat I have ever seen, but she is absolutely adorable. She sprawls out in the aisles, and if you rub her belly, she'll lay on her back with her legs stretched out and look like a big ole pillow. It's also a nice bonus that they'll wind your yarn for you if you buy any hanks. In my case, this ended up being a double-edged sword though, because I wandered around and found more things that I simply had to buy. Nice trick! I love shopping in small yarn stores like this because they also give you so many project ideas! Looking up on top of a shelf and seeing a beautiful shawl constructed with the yarn you're holding in your hand is awesome and gives you a much better idea of how the yarn actually looks in a project. In defense of pets in shops, it's there for a lot of reasons, but not to deter customers. Many pet owners struggle to understand HOW a person can be allergic to such a wonderful creature, me too, but they are. Sorry. As for the employees being less than helpful, they are just humans. They have good days and bad just like you. The biggest problem is people who come in and paw the fibers, marvel at the beautiful inventory and walk out with a purchase. It's hard on the ego. !!IMPORTANT!! I don't knit. I don't care to knit. I barely like knitted Items. That all being said, this has to be the greatest knitting store in existence. I can't imagine any knitting enthusiast being disappointed in what Knit On! has to offer. They seemed to have everything under the sun one would need to create any homemade delight. With prices ranging from cheap to why would anyone pay that much for yarn everyone will be able to get what they are looking for. My wife had little trouble in finding the supplies she needed and was only to happy to accomplish this all with the stellar service the staff offered. I have been to a few knitting supply stores in the Cincinnati area, and this is by far my favorite. I love the convenience of it being just a block away from my favorite local comic shop. Probably silly of me to want to give it a sixth star for being convenient to me. But I guess I would also want to give it an extra star for the sweet Jabba the Cat that follows you around while shopping. I adore tubby kitties, and this one is so sweet, purring insistently that I buy the fancy yarn that my heart desires. Well played, adorable shop cat. The person who helped me was very attentive to my questions without even a hint of pretense of some of the other local yarn shops. I was seeking a super specific yarn and trying to avoid ordering it online, where I'd have to pay shipping costs. I didn't find what I needed, but I did find something I wanted, which was some gorgeous Malabrigo yarn, at a more affordable cost than I have seen at other local shops. Full disclosure : I worked here for about a month in 2009, back when the store was in Bellevue. Maybe you saw me there. Maybe you didn't. ANYHOW, this is by far the shop with the most variety in the area. If you need something ordered in a certain color / quantity, talk with whoever is there and they can order it for you. Their selection is great - everything from soft and sumptuous Malabrigo to that crazy fur yarn. Everyone is knowledgable and will be able to help you out - and remember that if you buy your yarn in a skein, they will wind it for you for free. If you are allergic to cats, there is a really really big cat named Tanner. Tanner will follow you if you are allergic (she always followed my husband around) or ignore you if you are the girl who chased the poor cat around with keys in order to try and exercise her and make her lose weight (my attempts were failed apparently.) Overall, go here for yarn. And accessories. And knitting / crochet needs. You will be happy. read more

I live in Texas and during the pandemic had started an afghan using a yarn I loved. About halfway through my stash of yarn I realized that I was not going to have enough. After doing some research, I realized there were not that many skeins left in the United States as shipping from England had come to a halt. Nanci did not have the exact kind in her store, but contacted yarn sellers' message boards for me to locate yarn. She then followed up with me weeks later when she found out the yarn was back in stock! I have never met Nanci, but she gave me the best customer service I have ever received! I went here to pick up some yarn. The first time they weren't open when they said they were going to be. So that annoyed. Secondly, When I went here again trying to shop local instead of going to the craft store. The women working here wasn't really friendly and the whole time she kept talking to me like I was dumb. I told her I was making a baby blanket and it was my first time making anything. She kept talking to me like it was the hardest thing in the world to knit and that I needed to come in for lessons. I bought everything I needed and left. I ended up walking into another local small knitting/sewing shop and found a yarn colour I liked better. I ended up buying the yarn at that store. I called Knit On! to ask them if I could return the $50 of yarn that I hadn't even touched yet and they said I could only return it for exchange or in-store credit. This is extremely frustrating. I may have as well just on to the big chain craft store. I got on Youtube and I already have a giant portion of the blanket done. SO, I guess that women were wrong. This is a decent size store and they have a lot of different yarn and knitting products and tools. If you need something along those lines you can probably find it here. But there are better local stores that have better customer service around Cincinnati. I probably won't be coming back here again. read more

Now that I've moved away, I really miss the staff, the selection, and the cat at Knit On. There's something special about feeling especially welcome in a yarn store as a brand new knitter, with patient and kind folks to help with questions you know they must have answered a thousand times. Another part of what makes Knit On such a great spot for a new knitter is having a well-behaved and attentive shop cat. My friend and I wanted to take classes but she is allergic to cats and this store apparently wants their cat more than customers. When I called to inquire about the classes, I asked whether there was a cat b/c my friend was very allergic and was told yes there is. Although I don't live in Cincinnati any more, but I do miss Kniton a lot. My friend took me once since she knew I knit a lot, and I absolutely loved it. I have still many of their yarns. They a large selection of yarns, with great quality. I loved the atmosphere and hang out there a lot to the point that customers at the shop thought I work there! :) I used many of their yarns, and also designed pieces for my clients who have told me the quality is so great that they will hand it down to their children when they grow up. I like the staff a lot, and I appreciated that they answered all of my questions. I spent hours in the store, and during a very tough time in my life, it was my home. I live in another state now, and also during my travels when I searched for yarns still I think Knit on is one of a kind store. I still haven't find a place with that many variety of yarns. Shelves leaning in on you, claustrophobia, wool, cashmere and cable cotton in EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW! I'll never pretend to understand the knitting craze that seems to have touched even some of the more fringe demographic (see the punk rock knitters and look up the squid neck warmers on Etsy) but it's here and maybe that's a good thing. I myself am a big fan of fuzzy things and someone has to make them. I visited Knit On! With my mother one manic evening several years ago, trying to edge through the narrow aisles without pulling down skeins behind me. The two older women running the store were extremely friendly though at the time I was convinced they were watching me to make sure I didn't mess up anything. I remember feeling so overwhelmed by the amount of yarn climbing the walls around me that I was grateful to escape. The most recent visit was for some costuming. I'm a belly dancer, not a knitter and on occasion I find myself in the need of some good yarn to work into a tassel belt or a fringe for the newest skirt in my collection. I arrived with a migraine and $40 to spend. The woman behind the counter did her best to help me find what I wanted but since I wasn't really sure what I wanted she finally pointed me in a couple directions, let me explore myself and answered all my questions (even if she seemed to think a few of them were silly). I've become somewhat opposed to synthetics and had her show me the sections that had all natural fibers. The selection was impressive albeit quite pricey. I left with less yarn than I would have liked but what I purchased was lovely, soft and great quality. This shop boasts the largest selection of yarns, needles and accessories, books and patterns in the Cincinnati area and is a straight shot from the highway. If you park across the street look up and admire the tin flowers on the roof and take a walk down "The Avenue" for some window shopping at all the great shops. Avoid this area during rush hour, Fairfield has become a bit of a bottleneck for the area and traffic can be slow. read more

Knit On is my favorite yarn store in the Cincinnati region. They have the broadest selection of yarn and prices are reasonable. I even price checked against online for Sublime baby cashmere and Knit on was cheaper than online. The Wed or Saturday learn to knit/crochet class is good. Instructor let's you work on whatever project you want. It's a little store that packs a punch and is worth the short drive across the river. Parking is easy. Knit-On! has a great selection of yarn including so many of the I-don't-know-what-I'm-going-to-do-with-it-but-I-must-have-it variety. It is crammed from floor to ceiling and in a back room with yarn varieties from the basic to the beautiful and will inspire you and make you want to grab your needles if you are a bit of an, ahem, lapsed knitter. I haven't been to any of the classes here, but I have made friends with the resident cat. Yes, a cat in a yarn store. So if you don't need yarn, at least there is a cat. read more

I am an avid knitter and have tried to shop here numerous times over the past couple of years. The yarn selection is good but they have little in the way of accessories and no beads. My biggest problem with them is their lack of customer service. Not once had anyone who works here been helpful beyond short answers and pointing. I have been going to this store for years in both locations. I love their new location in Newport. They do have a fabulous selection and the staff is friendly if not exactly speedy. It's a yarn shop, being rushed is not usually a priority. I have always loved going there, until today. I had ordered something from them for a Christmas present on December 14th and was told it would take only a couple of days. When I called on the 22nd, they told me that it had not come in yet but they would call me when it came in. On the 29th, I find out the owner had personally decided not to order it when the original request was submitted. They had my phone number and never called me to let me know of this decision even though I have been a repeat customer for quite a while now. So to sum up, they do have a great selection, the yarn is reasonably priced for good yarn, the books - meh, they have a few nice accessories, good selection of needles, and the staff/owner are friendly but not reliable for special orders. Also they have a cat which is fun for cat people and kids and not so fun for those with allergies as the dander can come home with you on the yarn as I found out after knitting something for a person who was allergic. read more

I'm an on/off again knitter, and took my first knitting class at the old Knit On location in Bellevue. Now, when I'm in the mood to make something wonderful, I head to their location on Monmouth Street, in Newport. Sleek, bright, open--it's wonderful. Everything you could ever want (and I often leave with yarns that I didn't even KNOW I wanted!). And yes, the cat still comes to meet you--she's very dear and I love to pet her. I've always found exactly what I'm looking for at Knit on, and plenty of help to boot. I have been to other knitting stores in the area, and frankly, I don't need knitting to be snotty. There can be a bit of attitude or cliquishness that comes with a "fiber art" store, and well, I just mostly knit things for my kiddo and other people's kiddo's, so I really don't need the arrogance. read more

This place is amazing!! I frequented this little shop in Newport at least 3x in the week before my knitting final was due. They have yarn in just about a million colors, textures, and fibers. Everyone working was always ready and excited to help, even the huge adorable orange cat that follows you around the store. Which is another thing I LOVED about this place. I took my first class a few weeks ago and went back for more lessons today. Sally is great! Plus, I love the cat!

I attended a Beginners knitting class this morning at Knit On, and it was great! The instructor was very detailed and encouraging. She took time with each person in the class to ensure that they were understanding the steps. We each got to make a pot holder, which was a simple (but still hard!) first project. I didn't get a chance to look around at all of the different yarns and products that they had to offer, but their knitting class was enjoyable. There were about 15 people in the class, (which was an unusually large class) and I stayed for about 2 hours of instruction. Others in the class were still knitting when I left. The instructor encouraged everyone to come back for another class, which are held on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. read more

I am an avid knitter and shop everywhere for great yarn and great customer service. Knit On is superior. Yarn selection is the best in Cincinnati (and most of Ohio / Kentucky) but the customer service is tops. Extremely helpful, knowledgeable, but never pushy. They think of the small things ie. suggesting light colored needles for a black sweater I was starting, showing me patterns on Ravelry when they did not have exactly what I wanted, ordering yarn in a color they do not stock and making the call on availability as we waited. I drive 35 miles and pass 3 other yarn stores to shop at Knit On! Worth it. read more
