Do you love churches? If so, definitely visit the St. Lorenz (St. Lawrence) medieval church in…read moreNuremberg. Although the church was badly damaged during the Second World War, many of the religious artifacts were stored away and the church has since been restored. The church is stunning. Like many German churches, the construction spanned several centuries. The groundbreaking started in 1250. The nave of the church was completed in the early 1400s. Over the next eighty years church halls, choir and vaults were completed. Since the Jewish community was massacred or expelled from Nuremberg during the Black Death, Jewish gravestones were reused as building material in the construction of St. Lorenz church. They were found by a army chaplain and rabbi who was stationed in Nuremberg in 1969. He saw the Hebrew writing from remnants of Jewish gravestones that were cut into shapes that were used in a spiral staircase The gravestones were taken from a medieval Jewish cemetery in 1352 and transferred to the church to be used in the construction. More than 600 years later, the gravestones were removed carefully and returned to the local Jewish cemetery. During the Reformation, the church was cared for by the city council and by wealthy citizens. This may be why the art treasures of St. Lawrence were spared during the Reformation period. Definitely add this to your list while exploring the city. A very beautiful church with striking Gothic twin towers in the heart of Nuremberg.

Just one little anecdote that always amuses me is that the builders could not agree on the style of the towers and this is why each tower is different. A feud that is permanently displayed on the towers of a church no less... Anyway, take a close look at this church both inside and out. There are so many details to see, that even after years coming here, I still seem to discover new details. A must see for sure.
