One of the most popular meeting places in the city of Munich, it's easy to understand why as it stands at one end of the large Marienplatz square. There are a few traditions that happen here, some that date back to the 16th century. The funnest one, I think is the "wallet washing" where the mayor of Munich puts an empty wallet in the fountain to ensure that the city funds will be filled again next year. I had to go online and research. The original neo-Gothic fountain was built by Konrad Knoll between 1862 & 1865 but was destroyed during World War II. Sculptor Josef Henselmann rebuilt the current version in 1954 using surviving bronze figures. The fountain honors local guilds. It hosts the Metzgersprung (butcher's apprentice leap) and an Ash Wednesday tradition where the mayor washes an empty wallet in the water to bring financial good luck for the city.
