We paid money for our entrance and were immediately greeted with blatant disrespect, dehumanization, and racism. Many of the white folks started getting out of the pool when we got in. One child wanted to have fun with us, and his guardian quickly gathered him in fake concern for our folks, saying "I hope he isn't bothering you" when we were all clearly welcoming him. When a white woman started to swim with us, the lifeguard told her to stop. The pool staff continuously came over to us and gave us rules that they were not enforcing on the white swimmers. They began with telling us we could not swim in the deep end, and yet when white folks got in the deep end they said nothing. They then continued to criminalize our activities by telling us we couldn't splash each other, or horse around. A staff member higher up kept monitoring us coming back and forth and even set up a chair to sit. They would only engage with the white adult present, refusing to recognize or speak to the youth or adults of color. We noticed this behavior and began singing "what side are you on my people? What side are you on? We on the freedom side." This chant was met with extreme responses from many people at the pool. One lifeguard called the police on us- she is pictured here and is currently training to become a cop. The officer who arrived is her uncle. They later informed us that the police were called because we were "singing racist songs." Some of the responses we heard from the pool staff were: "We aren't racist, and I wont shoot you, but they (the police) will." "It doesn't do any good to stir the pot." "These songs could get you killed." "It's good that the youth learn their heritage, but the civil rights movement was 50 years ago." Once the police arrived and we attempted to leave, a cop told a young person in our group "keep walking nigger," and threatened other young people in our group with arrest and physical harms. While the Civil Rights Movement was 50 years ago, anti-blackness (in the south AND the north) is alive and well. We paid to go there to have fun, and were met with racism and threats of violence of our people.. some as young as 12. This is unnacceptable, and we implore the pool in question to fire the lifeguard who called the cops unprovoked, and seriously interrogate their practices as a safe space for young people. Life guards should guard life.

A very neat piece of Oak Ridge history. Oak Ridge,…read moreTennessee, was established during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project, a top-secret U.S. government program to develop atomic weapons. It was officially founded in 1942. At its peak during the war, Oak Ridge's population swelled to around 75,000 people. This remarkable growth was driven by the need for a large workforce to support the development of atomic weapons, particularly the uranium enrichment process taking place at the Oak Ridge facilities. The city was shrouded in secrecy during its early years, with its existence not widely known to the public. It played a critical role in the development of the atomic bomb, including the uranium enrichment work carried out at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There were restaurants, stores, food halls, and recreational structures built to support the city. This pool was one of those structures. This is a historic pool. It was originally constructed in 1944 by the Corps of Engineers and underwent major renovation in 1992-1993. It was reopened in the summer of 1994. The pool is spring water-fed and considered one of the largest in the nation with depths ranging from zero to 13-1/2 feet. It is located between Providence Road and Highland Avenue. It was not open when I stopped by but there is a plaque that describes it's history. It is a massive pool and easy to see from the parking lot. Their website states that it, "...is in need of major repairs as it is leaking large amounts of water each day and does not meet current code requirements. The City has selected a consulting firm to facilitate a planning process and gather data on existing conditions as well as collect community input to determine next steps for the pool."

This facility has a roomy kiddie pool with a mushroom shaped shower for the young ones to frolic through and more fountains as you enter the main pool area that cascade as you walk into the sloping beach-like larger kid area ( about 2 ft deep before reaching the buoy line barrier). As you pass the buoy barrier the decline in the pool continues to approximately 4ft before reaching the dock area; which always have 2 lifeguards constantly patrolling (and I do mean patrolling) for everyone's safety. You have a large grassy area to lie your towels down or set up a sport cover as long as it doesn't extend more that 10ft Sq. Multiple trash receptacles, that are constantly maintained and an ice cream station later in the afternoon. My family enjoys this establishment and will continue to do so.

Review: Karns Lion Pool (aka Karns Lion Library)…read more Today was my first experience at Karns Lion Pool. With the heat blazing, it seemed like the perfect day to cool off. But after our visit, I'm convinced they need to change the name to Karns Lion Library. I'll explain. First, we checked the website beforehand to see if they accepted cards. It said they did--just with a small fee--so I didn't bother grabbing cash. Turns out, they do take credit cards... just not debit cards. Which makes zero sense. It's literally the same machine, y'all. Luckily, I scraped up enough cash to get through the gate. Once inside, my daughter and I hopped on a rubber tube--one the pool actually provides--and started floating around together. That's when the Pool Czar (yes, we gave her a title) marched over and told us we couldn't be on the same tube... even though she's my daughter. That was our first clue something was off. Then we noticed how quiet it was. The place was packed, but you could hear a pin drop. No splashing, no shouting, no playing--because apparently, all of that is banned. No roughhousing. No sharing tubes. No being loud. Basically, no fun. We kept joking that if we laughed too hard, the Pool Czar would blow the whistle and banish us. Honestly, if you have loud, happy, energetic kids... this is probably not your pool. Now, for the positives: - There's a small slide, two diving boards, and a splash pad for the littles (though no lifeguard over there). - The concession stand is decent and affordable. - And despite the rules, we still had a great time with the group of us--mostly because we laughed at the whole situation. So yeah. Bring cash. Keep your voice down. And prepare for the most entertainingly quiet pool experience of your life.
