I rarely leave reviews, but I was genuinely disappointed by my experience with this office. The receptionist was rude and unprofessional while I was trying to schedule a consultation. Their website advertises free consultations, but after taking all of my information, I was told the consultation would cost $400. When I mentioned that the website states consultations are free, I was told that "no lawyers do free consultations." The interaction felt dismissive and uncomfortable from the start. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this experience did not reflect the professionalism I would expect from a law office. read more

I almost never give reviews, but this seemed important. Do yourself a favor and find another attorney. If you're going to pay thousands of dollars in a retainer, find someone with 5 stars! Van needs to retire. He was forgetful, made a couple of really big errors, and didn't advocate well for his client. He gave some horrible advice that will now require another attorney to fix. In the end, the phones weren't answered regularly, didn't get calls back in a timely manner, and then basically told concerns weren't relevant and figure it out on my own. read more

I can't even bring myself to Give Van Kenny one star. What a horrible experience I had using this man as my divorce attorney. Please don't waste your money on hiring him, you will be sorry if you do. He made mistake after mistake, all the while proclaiming he knew what he was doing. I wasted two trips to Weaverville because he forgot to check his email letting him know our case was to be rescheduled and we didn't need to be there. He was horrible in court, and to top it off, I had told both him and Jazmin I wanted my name legally changed back to my maiden name. It didn't happen! Zero start. Minus zero. He watched my ex extort a huge amount of money from me. He couldn't remember one single detail about my case every single time I met with him. He didn't care a single bit that my ex was a liar or the actual value of property. He actually turn against me at the end, yelling at me and denying things he had said. What a jerk. read more

Read the Ca State Bar reviews on Van O Kinney. It speaks volumes. He took 1500.00 from us. He then asked what do I expect him to do about it. This was after I called to check in with my case. If he couldn't do anything for us he should have said so when he took my money. He is as crooked as Shasta County. We had to hire Norman Ryker in Chico who did a very ethical and professional job and had to come to shasta county from Chico. Norman made our case with shasta county equitable and we were extremely happy with a job well done. Stay clear of this attorney. read more

Crook and a liar. Stay away from this lying crook. I cancelled my divorce verbally and he continued case for more money. He can not be trusted and has complaints with the bar. I had to fire him he took 3500 and did nothing but forget everything we discussed during the consultation. He charged me an OUTRAGEOUS retainer, sat on my divorce for 2 years and I still had to hire another attorney to get a simple divorce! I hired him as a divorce attorney at a $3500.00 upfront fee for a simple , mutually agreed upon divorce. Two years later, there was still no divorce! I requested my file so that I could hire another attorney and in the case file, not only were there BLANK SHEETS of paper-but duplicates and triplicates from the paperwork that had been completed mostly by my ex-wife's attorney to make it look like I had a file! He never even showed up in court for the only appearance he ever needed to make on my behalf and then charged me more for the "stand in" attorney who knew nothing about my simple divorce case! He was rarely ever available over the two year period in which he drug out my divorce, never answered my questions, never read my documents and even tried billing me many more times for sitting on my divorce case unnecessarily for two years! The longer he sat on it, the more he continued to try to charge! I then hired a brilliant attorney that was able to achieve a bifurcation in 30 days for only $1000.00! Does Van Kinney know what a bifurcation is after "practicing" taking people's money for over 30 years? Research and get the service you pay for somewhere else! After my experience and reading the other reviews, I agree, how is this man still able to represent himself as an attorney? Based on my direct experience with Van Kinney, in my opinion, his actions bring disgrace upon himself and his profession by misrepresenting what he said he would do to ensure my divorce, taking my payment for a service he never delivered, and not even reading my submissions to be knowledgeable about my case. He threw red-herrings instead of answers. Zero accountability for his lack of action. Look at his Bar record.
