I was genuinely sad when the original MUSC Urban Farm was demolished to make way for new education…read morebuildings. It had become such a peaceful escape for me, and I really cherished the quiet moments spent in the garden. That said, I'm truly delighted to see the farm reimagined as an urban garden in front of the IOP building. It's wonderful to see a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs growing there, and the new location feels more accessible and visible to the community. I can't wait to see what it produces in the spring, but even now it's encouraging to see the space being enjoyed and hopefully utilized by more people. It's comforting to know the spirit of the farm is still very much alive.

During the summer months especially, watering is a constant need, and the plants would gladly accept your help. They always let you harvest what's producing, too, so you get a little "bonus" for your efforts. Parking is still only available on the streets unless you are fortunate to live nearby and can walk or bike. If you've never been, you should plan a stroll by sometime. It's so peaceful and beautiful, I'm sure you'll want to come back! There are no public facilities, but you can definitely use one of the neighboring buildings during weekdays. I would suggest bringing a water bottle so you can stay hydrated, too. I hope you get to enjoy this urban farm as much as I do.

I'd like to start by saying I'm not a complainer. I understand stuff happens…read more But today we drove 40 minutes to get to Madrac Farms. The gravel road into it was blocked off, and instead there was a dirt road full of humongous potholes, filled with woodchips! I've never driven slower in my life....what the heck? There was a long line to get down this road....then when we get to the parking lot, after 10 minute down the drive, the parking lot is full. Probably 100 cars driving slowly around the parking area, hoping someone will miraculously leave, and hoping you're in the right place at the right time. There were no employees in the parking lot directing anyone. So rather than a corn-maze, we spent literally 30 minutes in a parking-lot-maze, trying to get the heck out of there. I understand people probably swarmed the place, due to the covid lockdown we live in. But we promised our two-year-old pumpkins and goats. Instead she got 2 hours in her car seat, and a trip to Walmart to get a pumpkin and a toy, for being so well-behaved during this waste of time. If the owners read this, I would advise the following: 1) get a proper road (gravel is great, not potholes and woodchips) 2) build a larger parking area 3) have some employees out there directing traffic 4) if you're over-capacity, turn people away at the main road!! I wish the owners success in their venture. Business owner myself. But I guarantee, we will not be back.

We all sat down in the dining room at a big table and went through the process. I honestly thought we would be more involved in the cheese making process, but it was more of an instruction and tasting throughout. I still really enjoyed it, but wanted to clear that up. Throughout the class, we made different cheeses, tasted them with crackers and other accoutrements and learned the process behind it. We thoroughly enjoyed the class... so much so that we purchased the take home kit to make our own. You can get all the items on your own, but we wanted to be supportive so we took home a gallon of goats milk from the farm, rennet, and citric acid. Plus we got instructions to take home too. We enjoyed making the cheese at home and it tasted so good. I now definitely appreciate purchasing a ball of mozzarella at the store a little more these days.
