On the morning of my departure (a few days ago) from Saint John back to Montreal, my 20 yr old…read moreHonda was sounding and acting uncomfortably cranky. Not being an expert, I really needed a knowledgeable assessment of what was going on before making the 12 hour return drive home. I found First Stop Auto on 41 Adelaide Street in Saint Johns North End by sheer grace and good fortune. I walked into the office and first off asked if one of the fellas would drive the vehicle so they could feel what was going on. Without hesitation, Tim had the key and we took a few block radius spin. Though the shop was fully booked for the day, knowing I was on my way back to MTL, and I believe, because it was obvious I was "camping" in the vehicle, Tim offered to hoist Honda and make an assessment at the end of the work day, so that I could, if it was possible, be safely on my way that same day. I unstrapped my bike from the roof and rode into the tourist section of Saint John for the afternoon. (The Busker Fest was fun. Wonderful artists. And the indoor market, a few blocks up the hill, is worth a gander.) Around 5:30 Paul, the proprietor (I believe), gave me the prognosis. =D Almost my worst fears. He suggested I take the bus back, and that of course, the vehicle was not worth investing in, several components were on the brink of failure, BUT that my most immediate concern was the radiator. I asked if Honda was safe to drive. "Yes. I would survive but old Honda might not." =D. K. I stocked up on jugs of water. Took a couple old bottles of that rad sealer fluid in case of dire need, and already had a good stock of overflow coolant. A few Hail Mary's, a few Tibetan Chants, Paul and Tim's blessings, and I was back on my intrepid way. I bought Paul a lotto ticket. If he won I may not see him and Tim when I roll back into Saint John in August with a couple cases of fine beer! I would, without hesitation, send my auto business their way! Beautiful. Great people. Immeasurably grateful for businesses like this one.

Said he had to change a rear, lateral stabilizer link, as the ball joint was toast. Sure, it's a 2010. I don't have a heated garage, so I gave him the green light. Then another phone call: the cam bolt was ceased. In the end I walked out with the part in a box (as requested) and a bill for $350. The ball joint was fine, even thought the part had been cut to pieces by a torch. I returned a few days later and he explained that it was the bushing that was bad. That made more sense, except that the threads on the cam bolt were dry, not a drop of penetrating oil. I also told him the car was still pulling to the right. He said something about the tires needing to be rotated. I had only recently put my winters on, and I always rotate them. Two weeks, and a highway trip later, the car still pulls, so I went to a reputable, maritime tire chain, on Fairville Blvd to have another alignment done. (Should have STARTED there! Duh!) Sure enough, alignment was way out. I returned to Hank's today to ask him to refund the alignment part of his bill from two weeks ago. He said, why didn't you come back? I said, I DID come back, and told you about it still pulling. I showed him the report showing the proper alignment and said, here's proof, it wasn't done properly. He started about my tires being worn again, and I told him about me already rotating them, that the new cam bolt was adjusted to max, and that the toe had to be adjusted from the front to compensate. He started about how his machine was brand new, very accurate, etc. I said, I don't care about the machine, it's the person using it. I want my money back. He said, I can't... I cut him off, saying, you can't or you won't? He said, I won't. Too bad. I told him, as the adage goes, 'Fool me once'... but there will never be a second time - I'll never set foot in your shop again. We shouted "pleasantries" to each other as I stormed out the door. Yah, have a nice day. Indeed.

Both times they fixed the wrong part and added in things that we did not even ask to be fixed. Both times we spent over $500, and for absolutely nothing. They quoted me 1159.21 after taxes, with about 750.00 of that in parts, before tax. I went to their supplier (Car Quest) and a Subaru dealer and got the parts for 300. Got a different mechanic to install them and I ended up paying 450.00 in total, parts and labour.
