KIN is a small, long-running center located close to Duke's campus. We've loved having our two little ones there, from toddler-age through the preschool years. The teachers are warm and creative, and have deep understanding of the children as individuals. They create a community that supports the children's social and emotional development, and fosters their independence. I was impressed to see how the teachers guided my shy toddler and taught him skills to increase his confidence with the other children. The teachers at KIN have been there for years, adding to the trusting and loving atmosphere. I love the arts and crafts that are brought home every day, and the evidence of good old playing-in-the-dirt!
KIN has a good balance between giving the kids plenty of unstructured play time, and more teacher-led activities that support the children's interests and facilitate learning. When I was initially touring daycares and preschools, it seemed to me that many centers emphasized "early academics" excessively, at the expense of more self-directed play and exploration. I've been pleased that KIN gives children the space, time, and materials to act on their natural curiosity. Kids will get plenty of academics in school, whereas now is the preciously short time for them to learn about the world based on their own experiences and discoveries.
Lastly, KIN is a non-profit organization, and the volunteer advisory board makes sure to direct resources towards fair wages, benefits, and professional development for teachers. As a result, the teachers have been there for many years. read more
